Transgender Patients: Communication Pearls for Pharmacists

    Get PDF
Understanding the unique communication needs of transgender patients is critical in order to minimize health disparities and patient barriers to care. As this population gains more social and political acceptance, pharmacists must be equipped to provide medical acceptance through knowledge of how to appropriately communicate with these patients through active listening, empathy, and sensitivity, while maintaining a high standard of respect and privacy

Getting Started as a New Preceptor

    Get PDF
Clinical experience in the healthcare field plays a crucial role in shaping future professionals into competent and well-rounded providers. Equally important is the ability to facilitate the learning process of learners to promote self-directed, lifelong learning and critical thinking.1-3 Preceptorship can vary in approach depending on the design of the learning experience: direct instruction, modeling, coaching, mentoring, and facilitiation.4-6 In addition, there are many teaching tools available such as One-Minute Preceptor, layered teaching, providing reflections, and thinking out loud.7-9 To be an effective preceptor, developing skills through self-reflection and seeking out professional development to strengthen areas of weakness are important. However, despite all the precepting methods, tools, and resources available, how does one truly know they are effective and accomplishing their goals as a preceptor? Many individuals can think of what they want to achieve and how they want to be perceived as a preceptor, but few develop a plan of how to accomplish it

Track-based improvement in the jet transverse momentum resolution for ATLAS

    Get PDF
We present a track-based method for improving the jet momentum resolution in ATLAS. Information is added to the reconstructed jet after the standard jet energy scale corrections have been applied. Track-based corrections are implemented, and a 10 Ăą 15% improvement in the jet transverse momentum resolution at low pT is achieved. The method is explained, and some validation and physics results are presented. Additional variables are described and analyzed for their resolution improvement potential

Behavioural Authentication Based on Smartphone Protected Personal Communication Data

    Get PDF
International audienceSmartphones have become ubiquitous in everyday life, storing and generating a huge amount of sensitive personal data which make them vulnerable to increasing security and privacy threats. While protecting smartphones has become a necessity, existing traditional authentication methods, which are mainly PINs and passwords, are facing remarkable drawbacks and behavioural biometrics-based authentication was adopted as the best alternative to ensure better protection. This paper presents a comparative study of many behavioural authentica-tion solutions using smartphone personal communication data. Different approaches are compared such as using Distance Minimization, K-means and Support Vector Machine (SVM) as classification method. The data privacy protection by using the BioHashing algorithm is also considered in the paper. The authentication approaches were tested on a dataset of 93 users with more than 16.000 samples and show promising results with an EER of 10% without any data protection with the One Class SVM method and an EER remarkably lower than 1% for the 3 adopted methods with data privacy protection

19 heures. J'aime les morts. Je termine mon cafĂ©. J'Ă©crase ma cigarette. J'enfile un gros pull. Une veste. Je boutonne ma veste. Enfile un manteau. Lace mes chaussures. Ferme ma porte Ă  clĂ©. Descends les escaliers. Croise un voisin. Il tourne la tĂȘte. Salopard. Ils n'osent pas me saluer.

    Get PDF
Palermo Viejo is an old, working class neighborhood of Buenos Aires, which, since the end of the 1970s, has been subject to a large-scale transformation of its activities, its building environment and its resident populations. These transformations have triggered a process of gentrification, whose characteristics have evolved with the opening of the city to globalization during the 1990s, and above all, since the 2001 crisis, with the appearance of growing tourism, the implantation of brand name stores and the multiplication of wide-scale real estate projects. The aim of this work will be to question the forms of this type of urban development, in a context marked by both gentrification and globalization, as well as its effect on the territory, its practices and its inhabitants, through two conflicts: the first triggered by the sudden arrival of street vendors, and the second produced by the multiplication of new construction projects. These conflicts allow us to question the effects of gentrification on central urban centers and the way in which its residents receive them. Thus, they play a heuristic role, permitting, on the one hand, a means of revealing the hidden effects of the media discourse, and on the other, an invitation to reflect on the way these changes have been imposed.

    Get PDF
This paper is divided into two parts. The first one concerns the discussion, drawing from theory, which aims to present the contours and challenges of contemporary semiotics that focus on new demands from society, searching to describe and explain how the meaning of practices and forms of life is built. Therefore, we long to demonstrate that the semiotics of discourse does not refuse history or the social and cultural dimensions of discourse, as it takes the meaning for its object, in the tension between the social and the individual, in the temporality of the world, and discourse. The second part of this work presents a reflection on the semiotic statute of the lexeme “housemaid”; seeking to handle the thick and resistant layers of the meaning that maintain its uses in the Brazilian society and that, played the main role to acknowledge the universes of values, social practices, and forms of life, deeply marked by racism and class discrimination
