    Performance of a high-work, low-aspect-ratio turbine stator tested with a realistic inlet radial temperature gradient

    A 0.767-scale model of a turbine stator designed for the core of a high-bypass-ratio aircraft engine was tested with uniform inlet conditions and with an inlet radial temperature profile simulating engine conditions. The principal measurements were radial and circumferential surveys of stator-exit total temperature, total pressure, and flow angle. The stator-exit flow field was also computed by using a three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver. Other than temperature, there were no apparent differences in performance due to the inlet conditions. The computed results compared quite well with the experimental results

    Effect of tomato variety, cultivation, climate and processing on Sola l 4, an allergen from Solanum lycopersicum

    Tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum) are one of the most consumed vegetables worldwide. However, tomato allergies in patients suffering from birch pollen allergy occur frequently. Due to highly similar protein structures of the tomato allergen Sola l 4 and the major birch pollen allergen Bet v 1, patients cross-react with allergenic proteins from tomato as well as other fruits or vegetables. The aim of this study was to quantify Sola l 4 in various tomatoes differing in color, size and shape for identification of varieties with a reduced allergen level. Therefore, an indirect competitive ELISA using a specific polyclonal Sola l 4 antibody was developed. In addition, two varieties, both cultivated either conventionally or organically and furthermore dried with different methods, were analyzed to investigate the influence of the cultivation method and processing techniques on Sola l 4 level. Within 23 varieties, Sola l 4 content varied significantly between 0.24 and 1.71 ÎĽg Sola l 4/g FW. The tomato cultivars Rugantino and Rhianna showed the significantly lowest level, whereas in cultivars Farbini and Bambello the significantly highest concentration was determined. Drying of tomatoes in the oven and by sun resulted in a significant decrease. The thermal instability was verified for the recombinant Sola l 4 emphasizing the results for the native protein in dried tomato samples. Overall, the Sola l 4 content is cultivar-dependent and no correlation between color and Sola l 4 amount was found. During the drying process of tomatoes Sola l 4 level was significantly reduced due to thermal instability. Growing conditions have a minor effect whereas seasonal effects show a more pronounced impact. These findings could extend the knowledge about the allergen level of different tomato varieties and may help to improve food safety to potentially increase the life quality of patients suffering from birch pollen allergy

    Analytical and Experimental Study of Flow Through an Axial Turbine Stage with a Nonuniform Inlet Radial Temperature Profile

    Results are presented for a typical nonuniform inlet radial temperature profile through an advanced single-stage axial turbine and compared with the results obtained for a uniform profile. Gas temperature rises of 40 K to 95 K are predicted at the hub and tip corners at the trailing edges of the pressure surfaces in both the stator and rotor due to convection of hot fluid from the mean by the secondary flow. The inlet temperature profile is shown to be mixed out at the rotor exit survey plane (2.3 axial chords downstream of the rotor trailing edge) in both the analysis and the experiment. The experimental rotor exit angle profile for the nonuniform inlet temperature profile indicates underturning at the tip caused by increased clearance. Severe underturning also occurs at the mean, both with and without the nonuniform inlet temperature profile. The inviscid rotational flow code used in the analysis fails to predict the underturning at the mean, which may be caused by viscous effects

    We consider a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling, and study the effects of magnetic s-wave impurities and long-range non-magnetic disorder on the spin-charge dynamics of the system. We focus on voltage induced spin polarizations and their relation to spin Hall currents. Our results are obtained using the quasiclassical Green function technique, and hold in the full range of the disorder parameter αpFτ\alpha p_F\tau.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures.     Connecting biodiversity monitoring with soil inventory information - A Swiss case study

    Switzerland is one of the first countries in the world to monitor its biological diversity. The Federal Office for the environment (FOEN), triggered by the Rio world summit, initiated 1995 a program for this purpose called Biodiversity Monitoring in Switzerland (BDM). According to the Convention on Biological Diversity various biodiversity targets were defined and the action plan strategy biodiversity Switzerland serves to implement these strategic goals. Unfortunately, up to very recently, soil was not part of these considerations. In the Swiss biodiversity monitoring system a core indicator, species diversity in habitats, is designed to document changes in species diversity of vascular plants and mosses in Switzerland’s major habitats. Together with the current land use and general metadata like elevation, slope, exposition and geology these data are stored in a central database. Since 2001 the totally 1’600 sites based on a regular grid (6 by 4 km) are resampled in a 5 years interval. In the third sampling campaign (2011-2015) the setting was broadened by taking soil samples at all locations possible. At each site 4 replicates 0-20 cm were taken to provide predictions on plot scale variability. All samples were prepared in the laboratory of the Swiss Soil Monitoring Network. Exploratory data analyses for pH, soil organic carbon and nitrogen revealed distinct patterns according to land use as well as to altitude; pH decreases from colline to alpine zones. Furthermore, regional analyses show enormous differences between the northern and southern side of the Alps. Connecting measured soil parameters with the outcome of the BDM survey enables to determine the impact of environmental conditions on species diversity of vascular plants and mosses as well as on soil-plant interactions. Therefore, connecting measured soil inventory data and plant and moss diversity information provide a clear added value to the Biodiversity Monitoring in Switzerland

    Cortical sinus probing, S1P1-dependent entry and flow-based capture of egressing T cells.

    The cellular dynamics of the egress of lymphocytes from lymph nodes are poorly defined. Here we visualized the branched organization of lymph node cortical sinuses and found that after entry, some T cells were retained, whereas others returned to the parenchyma. T cells deficient in sphingosine 1-phosphate receptor type 1 probed the sinus surface but failed to enter the sinuses. In some sinuses, T cells became rounded and moved unidirectionally. T cells traveled from cortical sinuses into macrophage-rich sinus areas. Many T cells flowed from medullary sinuses into the subcapsular space. We propose a multistep model of lymph node egress in which cortical sinus probing is followed by entry dependent on sphingosine 1-phosphate receptor type 1, capture of cells in a sinus region with flow, and transport to medullary sinuses and the efferent lymph

    Inverse Spin Hall Effect and Anomalous Hall Effect in a Two-Dimensional Electron Gas

    We study the coupled dynamics of spin and charge currents in a two-dimensional electron gas in the transport diffusive regime. For systems with inversion symmetry there are established relations between the spin Hall effect, the anomalous Hall effect and the inverse spin Hall effect. However, in two-dimensional electron gases of semiconductors like GaAs, inversion symmetry is broken so that the standard arguments do not apply. We demonstrate that in the presence of a Rashba type of spin-orbit coupling (broken structural inversion symmetry) the anomalous Hall effect, the spin Hall and inverse spin Hall effect are substantially different effects. Furthermore we discuss the inverse spin Hall effect for a two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling; our results agree with a recent experiment.Comment: 5 page
