Epitaxial growth in dislocation-free strained alloy films: Morphological and compositional instabilities
The mechanisms of stability or instability in the strained alloy film growth
are of intense current interest to both theorists and experimentalists. We
consider dislocation-free, coherent, growing alloy films which could exhibit a
morphological instability without nucleation. We investigate such strained
films by developing a nonequilibrium, continuum model and by performing a
linear stability analysis. The couplings of film-substrate misfit strain,
compositional stress, deposition rate, and growth temperature determine the
stability of film morphology as well as the surface spinodal decomposition. We
consider some realistic factors of epitaxial growth, in particular the
composition dependence of elastic moduli and the coupling between top surface
and underlying bulk of the film. The interplay of these factors leads to new
stability results. In addition to the stability diagrams both above and below
the coherent spinodal temperature, we also calculate the kinetic critical
thickness for the onset of instability as well as its scaling behavior with
respect to misfit strain and deposition rate. We apply our results to some real
growth systems and discuss the implications related to some recent experimental
observations.Comment: 26 pages, 13 eps figure
Social consensus through the influence of committed minorities
We show how the prevailing majority opinion in a population can be rapidly
reversed by a small fraction p of randomly distributed committed agents who
consistently proselytize the opposing opinion and are immune to influence.
Specifically, we show that when the committed fraction grows beyond a critical
value p_c \approx 10%, there is a dramatic decrease in the time, T_c, taken for
the entire population to adopt the committed opinion. In particular, for
complete graphs we show that when p < p_c, T_c \sim \exp(\alpha(p)N), while for
p > p_c, T_c \sim \ln N. We conclude with simulation results for
Erd\H{o}s-R\'enyi random graphs and scale-free networks which show
qualitatively similar behavior.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
Verwirklichung einer vollkommenen GlĂŒcksmöglichkeit/A perfect bliss-potential realized: âWunsch, Indianer zu werdenâ im Lichte des Dao Kafkas ĂŒbersetzend gelesen/Transreading âWish, to Become Indianâ in light of Kafkaâs Dao
Walking an unexplored path, Huiwen Helen Zhang contextualizes Kafka's pithy and cryptic parable, âWish, to Become Indianâ in his transplantation of Daoist philosophyâan astonishing cross-cultural enigma that Zhang terms âKafka's Daoââand parses it through a micro-level approach that Zhang terms âtransreading.â Contextualizing âWish, to Become Indianâ in Kafka's dialogue with ancient Chinese philosophers such as Laozi, Liezi, and Zhuangzi enables the reader to comprehend a series of otherwise incomprehensible puzzles. Zhang's scrutiny of Kafka's Dao shows how, through creative writing, Kafka not only penetrates esoteric Daoist classics, but also furthers their spirit in a way that transcends Richard Wilhelm, the pioneer European Sinologist. Transreading âWish, to Become Indianâ illuminates nuances that otherwise might have been overlooked. Wordplay, punctuational oddity, syntactic complexity, lyric density, and the curiously interlaced tenses and cases are all part of the idiosyncratic delivery of Kafka's message. Integrating the four activities of transreadingâlento reading demanded and enhanced by cultural hermeneutics, creative writing required and inspired by poetic translationâunravels Kafka's riddle as a historical-cultural phenomenon.publishedVersio

Paleoclimate validation of a numerical climate model
An analysis planned to validate regional climate model results for a past climate state at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, against paleoclimate evidence for the period is described. This analysis, which will use the GENESIS model of global climate nested with the RegCM2 regional climate model, is part of a larger study for DOE`s Yucca Mountain Site Characterization Project that is evaluating the impacts of long term future climate change on performance of the potential high level nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain. The planned analysis and anticipated results are presented
