    Aspects of thermal leptogenesis in braneworld cosmology

    The mechanism of thermal leptogenesis is investigated in the high-energy regime of braneworld cosmology. Within the simplest seesaw framework with hierarchical heavy Majorana neutrinos, we study the implications of the modified Friedmann equation on the realization of this mechanism. In contrast with the usual leptogenesis scenario of standard cosmology, where low-energy neutrino data favors a mildly strong washout regime, we find that leptogenesis in the braneworld regime is successfully realized in a weak washout regime. Furthermore, a quasi-degenerate light neutrino mass spectrum is found to be compatible with this scenario. For an initially vanishing heavy Majorana neutrino abundance, thermal leptogenesis in the brane requires the decaying heavy Majorana neutrino mass to be M1 > 10^10 GeV and the fundamental five-dimensional gravity scale 10^12 < M5 < 10^16 GeV, which corresponds to a transition from brane to standard cosmology at temperatures 10^8 < Tt < 10^14 GeV.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, a few comments and references added.     Gravitational baryogenesis in Gauss-Bonnet braneworld cosmology

    The mechanism of gravitational baryogenesis, based on the CPT-violating gravitational interaction between the derivative of the Ricci scalar curvature and the baryon-number current, is investigated in the context of the Gauss-Bonnet braneworld cosmology. We study the constraints on the fundamental five-dimensional gravity scale, the effective scale of B-violation and the decoupling temperature, for the above mechanism to generate an acceptable baryon asymmetry during the radiation-dominated era. The scenario of gravitational leptogenesis, where the lepton-number violating interactions are associated with the neutrino mass seesaw operator, is also considered.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, final version to appear in Phys.     MiRIAD update: using alternative polyadenylation, protein interaction network analysis and additional species to enhance exploration of the role of intragenic miRNAs and their host genes

    MicroRNAs have established their role as potent regulators of the epigenome. Interestingly, most miRNAs are located within protein-coding genes with functional consequences that have yet to be fully investigated. MiRIAD is a database with an interactive and user-friendly online interface that has been facilitating research on intragenic miRNAs. In this article, we present a major update. First, data for five additional species (chimpanzee, rat, dog, cow and frog) were added to support the exploration of evolutionary aspects of the relationship between host genes and intragenic miRNAs. Moreover, we integrated data from two different sources to generate a comprehensive alternative polyadenylation dataset. The miRIAD interface was therefore redesigned and provides a completely new gene model representation, including an interactive visualization of the 30 untranslated region (UTR) with alternative polyadenylation sites, corresponding signals and potential miRNA binding sites. Furthermore, we expanded on functional host gene network analysis. Although the previous version solely reported protein interactions, the update features a separate network analysis view that can either be accessed through the submission of a list of genes of interest or directly from a gene's list of protein interactions. In addition to statistical properties of the submitted gene set, the interaction network graph is presented and miRNAs with seed site over- and underrepresentation are identified. In summary, the update of miRIAD provides novel datasets and bioinformatics resources with a significant increase in functionality to facilitate intragenic miRNA research in a user-friendly and interactive way

    Chemical composition and antimicrobial properties of the essential oils of two Guadua Kunth species (Poaceae-Bambusoideae)

    Bamboos are described as one of the most important renewables, easily obtained, and valuable of all forest resources. Brazil is the country with the greatest diversity of bamboo species in the New World [1]. One of the most important bamboo groups growing in South America belongs to the Guadua genus, from which two species, G. angustifolia Kunth. and G. chacoensis (Rojas Acosta) Londoño & P.M. Peterson, are morphologically closely related. Due to the taxonomic difficulties presented by the Guadua complex, the main objective of this work was to evaluate the potential of their volatile oils for distinguishing the closely related species and to evaluate new potential applications for these plants. Leaves of the taxa were collected at an Experimental Unit from the Agronomical Institute from Campinas (IAC) located in Tatuí-SP. The essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation for 4 h, and component identification was performed by GC/MS [2]. The yields were found to be 0.027% and 0.00079% (w/w), for G. angustifolia and G. chacoensis, respectively. Terpenes and terpene-related compounds accounted for most of the compositions of the two samples. The major compounds of G. angustifolia oil were hexahydrofarnesyl acetone (23.1%) and (Z)-phytol (21.3%), while G. chacoensis oil was characterized by (E)-β-ionone (8.8%), hexadecanoic acid (6.8%), hexadecenoic acid (6.5%), (Z)-phytol (5.3%) and (E)-α-ionone (5.0%). The antimicrobial activity was assayed by a microdilution method in microplates [2] against Aspergillus brasiliensis, Candida albicans, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus; none of the oils exerted any considerable activity (MIC > 250 µg/mL), as only extracts with MIC < 100 µg/mL can be considered as candidates for developing new antimicrobial agents [3]

    Natural polyprenylated benzophenones: keto-enol tautomerism and stereochemistry

    The keto-enol tautomerism and stereochemistry study of a HIV-inhibitory natural benzophenone, (1R,5R,7R,8S)-(+)-3-(10-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-10-hydroxymethylene)-8-methyl -1,5,7-tris(3-methyl-2-butenyl)-8-(4-methyl-3-pentenyl)-bicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-2,4,9-trione (a), isolated from Garcinia brasiliensis seeds is presented. The crystal structure of (a), which is also know as guttiferona A, was determined by X-ray diffraction and its intra and inter-molecular geometries discussed and compared with two analogue natural benzophenones: clusianone and epiclusianone. In (a), the hydroxyl H atom from enolizable 2,4,10-trione moiety is linked in the oxygen atom bonded to 10-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)methylene group, in opposition to the related natural benzophenones, where this analogue H-atom is placed in different O-atoms from bicyclo[3.3.1]nonane ring system. Such behaviour can be explained by the presence of aromatic OH6 group in (a) that origins a further delocalized resonance path along of 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl-C10-OH2 group. In addition, the (a) stereochemistry around C7 atom is compared with known structures of clusianone and epiclusianone and the influence from configuration in this chiral C-atom to structural features found in the enolizable system is proposed

    Acute exercise induce endothelial nitric oxide synthase phosphorylation via Akt and AMP-activated protein kinase in aorta of rats: Role of reactive oxygen species

    AbstractBackgroundAcute exercise increases reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, including hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). H2O2 promotes endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) activation and phosphorylation in endothelial cells. With this in mind, the present study was designed to evaluate ex vivo eNOS phosphorylation in rat aortas incubated with H2O2 and to test this hypothesis in vivo in the aortas of rats submitted to acute exercise.MethodsFor ex vivo studies, six groups of aortic tissue were formed: control, H2O2, N-acetylcysteine (NAC), LY294002, compound C, and LY294002 plus compound C. While incubation with H2O2 increased Akt, AMPK and eNOS phosphorylation, pre-incubation with NAC strongly reduced the phosphorylation of these enzymes. For in vivo studies, male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: control, cont+NAC, exercise, and exer+NAC. After a 3h swimming session, animals were decapitated and aortas were excised for biochemical and immunoblotting analysis.ResultsAcute exercise increased superoxide levels and dichlorofluorescein (DCF) concentrations, and this increase was related to phosphorylation of Akt, AMPK and eNOS. On the other hand, use of NAC reduced superoxide levels and DCF concentration. Reduced superoxide levels and DCF in the exer+NAC group were associated with decreased Akt, AMPK and eNOS phosphorylation. These results appear to be connected with vascular function because VASP phosphorylation increased in acute exercise and decreased in exer+NAC.ConclusionOur results indicate that ROS induced by acute exercise play the important role of activating eNOS, a process apparently mediated by Akt and AMPK

    Effects of Ibuprofen intake in muscle damage, body temperature and muscle power in Paralympic powerlifting athletes

    The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of ingesting ibuprofen on post-workout recovery of muscle damage, body temperature and muscle power indicators in Paralympic powerlifting athletes. The study was carried out with eight Paralympic powerlifting athletes (aged 27.0 ± 5.3 years and 79.9 ± 25.5 kg of body mass) competing at the national level, with a minimum training experience of 12 months, who all submitted to two experimental conditions: Ibuprofen (2 × 00 mg) and control. The maximal isometric force of the upper limbs and rate of force development, thermography, and serum biochemical analyzes of creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase were measured before, after, 24 h after and 48 h after the intervention. Maximal isometric force only decreased in the placebo condition, which increased back to baseline levels, while no substantial decline in baseline force was seen in the ibuprofen condition, although no effect for exercise condition was detected. After the exercise, the rate of force development decreased significantly for both conditions and did not exceed baseline levels again after 48 h. Muscle temperature decreased significantly at 48-h post-exercise in the placebo condition, when compared with the previous day of measurement; and deltoid muscle temperature at 48-h post-exercise was higher with the ibuprofen condition. Although the results indicate some positive effects of ibuprofen use, they do not enable a clear statement regarding its positive effects on muscle function and muscle damage. Ibuprofen seems to have caused a delay in the anti-inflammatory response following exercise.publishedVersio

    Curvaton Dynamics in Brane-worlds

    We study the curvaton dynamics in brane-world cosmologies. Assuming that the inflaton field survives without decay after the end of inflation, we apply the curvaton reheating mechanism to Randall-Sundrum and to its curvature corrections: Gauss-Bonnet, induced gravity and combined Gauss-Bonnet and induced gravity cosmological models. In the case of chaotic inflation and requiring suppression of possible short-wavelength generated gravitational waves, we constraint the parameters of a successful curvaton brane-world cosmological model.     RELICS: High-Resolution Constraints on the Inner Mass Distribution of the z=0.83 Merging Cluster RXJ0152.7-1357 from strong lensing

    Strong gravitational lensing (SL) is a powerful means to map the distribution of dark matter. In this work, we perform a SL analysis of the prominent X-ray cluster RXJ0152.7-1357 (z=0.83, also known as CL 0152.7-1357) in \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} images, taken in the framework of the Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey (RELICS). On top of a previously known z=3.93z=3.93 galaxy multiply imaged by RXJ0152.7-1357, for which we identify an additional multiple image, guided by a light-traces-mass approach we identify seven new sets of multiply imaged background sources lensed by this cluster, spanning the redshift range [1.79-3.93]. A total of 25 multiple images are seen over a small area of ~0.4 arcmin2arcmin^2, allowing us to put relatively high-resolution constraints on the inner matter distribution. Although modestly massive, the high degree of substructure together with its very elongated shape make RXJ0152.7-1357 a very efficient lens for its size. This cluster also comprises the third-largest sample of z~6-7 candidates in the RELICS survey. Finally, we present a comparison of our resulting mass distribution and magnification estimates with those from a Lenstool model.
