Adaptation of cyanobacteria and microalgae to extreme environmental changes derived from anthropogenic pollution
Nowadays are living in a global extinction period consequence of human activities that are altering biosphere-level processes. Microalgal populations are being exposed to by-products of human activities for the first time and little is known about their mechanisms of adaptation. Cyanobacteria and microalgae could to adapt to novel environments through selection on spontaneous mutations or through individual responses (i.e. resistant organisms arising by mutations occurring randomly prior to selective agent exposure or by direct and specific adaptation in response to selective agent). We are working on mechanisms of adaptation of these organisms to catastrophic environmental changes coming from residual materials of water pollution. Fluctuation analysis is the procedure to study this adaptive process. Cyanobacteria and microalgal species exposed to several pollutants (herbicides, antibiotics, heavy metals, sulphureous waters and others) showed resistant variants arise from rare spontaneous pre-selective mutations occurring prior to pollutant exposition. Spontaneous mutations seem to be enough to assure the adaptation of large microalgal populations. However, resistant mutants show diminished growth and photosynthesis.
Built Environment Factors Affecting Bike Sharing Ridership: Data-Driven Approach for Multiple Cities
Identification of factors influencing ridership is necessary for policy-making, as well as, when examining transferability and aspects of performance and reliability. In this work, a data-driven method is formulated to correlate arrivals and departures of station-based bike sharing systems with built environment factors in multiple cities. Ridership data from stations of multiple cities are pooled in one data set regardless of their geographic boundaries. The method bundles the collection, analysis, and processing of data, as well as, the model’s estimation using statistical and machine learning techniques. The method was applied on a national level in six cities in Germany, and also on an international level in three cities in Europe and North America. The results suggest that the model’s performance did not depend on clustering cities by size but by the relative daily distribution of the rentals. Selected statistically significant factors were identified to vary temporally (e.g., nightclubs were significant during the night). The most influencing variables were related to the city population, distance to city center, leisure-related establishments, and transport-related infrastructure. This data-driven method can help as a support decision-making tool to implement or expand bike sharing systems

Neisseria gonorrhoeae challenge increases matrix metalloproteinase-8 expression in fallopian tube explants
Indexación: Scopus. Background: Neisseria gonorrhoeae (Ngo) is the etiological agent of gonorrhea, a sexually transmitted infection that initially infects the female lower genital tract. In untreated women, the bacteria can ascend to the upper genital reproductive tract and infect the fallopian tube (FTs), which is associated with salpingitis and can lead to impaired FT function and infertility. The extracellular matrix (ECM) plays an important role in cell migration and differentiation in the female genital tract, and some pathogens modify the ECM to establish successful infections. The ECM is regulated by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs), their endogenous inhibitors; MMP deregulation causes pathological conditions in a variety of tissues. Results: The aim of this work was to analyze the expression and localization of MMP-3, MMP-8, MMP-9, and TIMP-1 in FT explants during Ngo infection using real-time PCR, immunohistochemistry, zymography and ELISA. No significant variations in MMP-3, MMP-9, and TIMP-1 transcript levels were observed. In contrast, a significant increase (p < 0.05) was observed for MMP-8 expression and was accompanied by stromal immunoreactivity in infected explants. ELISA results supported these findings and showed that MMP-8 release increased upon gonococcal infection. Conclusions: Our results indicate that gonococcal infection induces increased MMP-8 expression, which might contribute to FT damage during infection. © 2017 Juica, Rodas, Solar, Borda, Vargas, Muñoz, Paredes, Christodoulides and Velasquez.https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fcimb.2017.00399/ful
factores que la motivanThe growth of the global economy and the globalization of markets have stimulated
companies of every size, ownership structure and business sector to make a strategic response
by expanding their operations in foreign markets as a mechanism of growth and long-term
survival. The family business constitutes a relatively new research topic and the literature
emphasizes the need to study the role of the family in its internationalization, which has not
been widely considered, constituting an area of growing interest.
The family business traditionally has been classified as adverse to risk, oriented to its
domestic market and less prone to develop external markets, where the family character of
the company is challenged by internationalization. The written documentation affirms that
research on the causal factors of the internationalization of the family business is insufficient.
Based on this study need, the main research question and the secondary questions were
raised, being these questions the basis for formulating the hypotheses that were established in
the theoretical framework. The review of the literature allowed to understand each of the
factors that correspond to the study and the variables that measure them, managing to
conclude about their possible relation.
In order to analyze the research problem, this cross-sectional study explored the
relationship between ownership, government and management team as factors that describe
the international business initiative of the median family business, analyzing aspects related
to the organizational culture of the family business that influence the internationalization. The
survey was used as a data collection tool, achieving a total of 117 valid cases corresponding
to Ecuadorian family business enterprises in the floricultural and agro industrial sectors. To
test the proposed relationships, a model of partial least squares (PLS-SEM) structural
equations was used based on variance.
The findings of this study show, as proposed, a negative influence on
internationalization, when the orientation to the administration works coupled with the
culture of family commitment. The management orientation coupled with the strategic
flexibility of the management team shows a positive impact on internationalization. The
management orientation presented a negative relation with the experience in the management
team industry, obtaining an opposite result to the proposed one and the experience in the
industry of the management team showed a positive relation with the degree of
internationalization.
This study seeks to contribute to the knowledge of the family business and the aspects
of the organizational culture that influence its internationalization, to understand the factors
that determine it and can describe it, contributing to the literature of strategic management
and specifically to the theory based on means. It was developed in Ecuador, where no studies
of this nature have been identified, so it is sought to contribute empirical evidence to the
knowledge of the family business, helping to create capacities in them, increasing their
chances of growth, survival and continuity. Finally, this study contributes from a theoretical
and practical point of view, being relevant the findings for owners, administrators,
consultants and academics who have professional activity or study the family business, its
internationalization and the factors that motivate itTesi
