The Classroom Observation Schedule to Measure Intentional Communication (COSMIC): An observational measure of the intentional communication of children with autism in an unstructured classroom setting
The Classroom Observation Schedule to Measure Intentional Communication (COSMIC) was devised to provide ecologically valid outcome measures for a communication-focused intervention trial. Ninety-one children with autism spectrum disorder aged 6 years 10 months (SD 16 months) were videoed during their everyday snack, teaching and free play activities. Inter-rater reliability was high and relevant items showed significant associations with comparable items from concurrent Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – Generic (Lord et al., 2000) assessments. In a subsample of 28 children initial differences in rates of initiations, initiated speech/vocalisation and commenting were predictive of language and communication competence 15 months later. Results suggest that the use of observational measures of intentional communication in natural settings is a valuable assessment strategy for research and clinical practice
The Mass Function of Dark Halos in Superclusters and Voids
A modification of the Press-Schechter theory allowing for presence of a
background large-scale structure (LSS) - a supercluster or a void, is proposed.
The LSS is accounted as the statistical constraints in form of linear
functionals of the random overdensity field. The deviation of the background
density within the LSS is interpreted in a pseudo-cosmological sense. Using the
constraints formalism may help us to probe non-trivial spatial statistics of
haloes, e.g. edge and shape effects on boundaries of the superclusters and
voids. Parameters of the constraints are connected to features of the LSS: its
mean overdensity, a spatial scale and a shape, and spatial momenta of higher
orders. It is shown that presence of a non-virialized LSS can lead to an
observable deviation of the mass function. This effect is exploited to build a
procedure to recover parameters of the background perturbation from the

Next-to-leading order QCD predictions for W+W+jj production at the LHC
Because the LHC is a proton-proton collider, sizable production of two
positively charged W-bosons in association with two jets is possible. This
process leads to a distinct signature of same sign high-pt leptons, missing
energy and jets. We compute the NLO QCD corrections to the QCD-mediated part of
pp -> W+W+jj. These corrections reduce the dependence of the production
cross-section on the renormalization and factorization scale to about +- 10
percent. We find that a large number of W+W+jj events contain a relatively hard
third jet. The presence of this jet should help to either pick up the W+W+jj

A Correlational Analysis Of Tethered Swimming, Swim Sprint Performance And Dry-land Power Assessments
Swimmers are often tested on both dry-land and in swimming exercises. The aim of this study was to test the relationships between dry-land, tethered force-time curve parameters and swimming performances in distances up to 200m. 10 young male high-level swimmers were assessed using the maximal isometric bench-press and quarter-squat, mean propulsive power in jump-squat, squat and countermovement jumps (dry-land assessments), peak force, average force, rate of force development (RFD) and impulse (tethered swimming) and swimming times. Pearson product-moment correlations were calculated among the variables. Peak force and average force were very largely correlated with the 50- and 100-m swimming performances (r=-0.82 and -0.74, respectively). Average force was very-largely/largely correlated with the 50- and 100-m performances (r=-0.85 and -0.67, respectively). RFD and impulse were very-largely correlated with the 50-m time (r=-0.72 and -0.76, respectively). Tethered swimming parameters were largely correlated (r=0.65 to 0.72) with mean propulsive power in jump-squat, squat-jump and countermovement jumps. Finally, mean propulsive power in jump-squat was largely correlated (r=-0.70) with 50-m performance. Due to the significant correlations between dry-land assessments and tethered/actual swimming, coaches are encouraged to implement strategies able to increase leg power in sprint swimmers.3721121
Effects of anxiety on neurocognitive performance in HIV positive adults
Objective: To examine the effects of anxiety on neuropsychological performance among HIV positive adults in Lusaka, Zambia.Design: A cross-sectional study with a sample of 263 participants of who 107 (40.7%) were males and 156 (59.3%) were females.Measures: The International Neurobehavioural Test Battery and Beck Anxiety Inventory were used to assess cognitive performance and anxiety levels respectively.Results: Severe anxiety showed a weak positive correlation (r=.148, p=0.472), but the result did not reach statistical significance. Participants who were not able to perform instrumental activities of daily living independently were more likely to be anxious (p<0.05).Conclusion: Results obtained from this study imply that there are minimal differences in performance between non anxious and anxious HIV positive individuals on neurocognitive performance. Maximum-Entropy Weighting of Multi-Component Earth Climate Models
A maximum entropy-based framework is presented for the synthesis of
projections from multiple Earth climate models. This identifies the most
representative (most probable) model from a set of climate models -- as defined
by specified constraints -- eliminating the need to calculate the entire set.
Two approaches are developed, based on individual climate models or ensembles
of models, subject to a single cost (energy) constraint or competing
cost-benefit constraints. A finite-time limit on the minimum cost of modifying

Design and optimization of electrochemical microreactors for continuous electrosynthesis
The study focuses on the design and construction, as well as the theoretical and experimental optimization of electrochemical filter press microreactors for the electrosynthesis of molecules with a high added value. The main characteristics of these devices are firstly a high-specific electrochemical area to increase conversion and selectivity, and secondly the shape and size of themicrochannels designed for a uniform residence time distribution of the fluid. A heat exchanger is integrated into the microstructured electrode to rapidly remove (or supply) the heat required in exo- or endothermic reactions. The microreactors designed are used to perform-specific electrosynthesis reactions such as thermodynamically unfavorable reactions (continuous NADH regeneration), or reactions with high enthalpy changes
On the role of different Skyrme forces and surface corrections in exotic cluster-decay
We present cluster decay studies of Ni formed in heavy-ion
collisions using different Skyrme forces. Our study reveals that different
Skyrme forces do not alter the transfer structure of fractional yields
significantly. The cluster decay half-lives of different clusters lies within
