A Critic in Her Own Right: Taking Virginia Woolf\u27s Literary Criticism Seriously

Considered mostly ancillary to her fiction, Virginia Woolf’s prolific career in literary criticism has rarely been studied in its entirety and in its own right. This study situates her in the common critical practices of her day and crystallizes basic tenets and a critical theory of sorts from her critical journalism published 1904–1928: the author argues that Woolf does not advocate a policing role for the critic, but rather that critics foster art in collaboration with readers and writers. Finally, this work discusses Woolf’s appeal to writers to invest all their energy in improving their skills in character portrayal to adequately depict all classes and genders in order to invent a new kind of psychological fiction

Prosodie neutraler und nicht-neutraler Äußerungen der russischen Standardsprache im Kontext des Fremdspracherwerbs

Beim Fremd- und Zweitspracherwerb kommt es neben der segmentalen Phonetik und Phonologie auch darauf an, den im Unterricht noch nicht immer genügend berücksichtigten Bereich der Intonation und Prosodie nebst der gesamten suprasegmentalen Phonetik mit einzubinden. Hierfür wird vorgeschlagen, auch Daten aus kontrastiven, aber auch einzelsprachlichen Studien zur Prosodie zu nutzen. Insbesondere für das Russische, sowohl als Ziel- als auch als Ausgangssprache, soll auf die prosodische Realisierung von Äußerungen in nicht-neutralem Kontext, wie dies etwa bei Bewertungen der Fall ist, eingegangen werden. Die hierbei relevanten Parameter, wie bspw. Akzentstruktur, Grundfrequenzniveau, Grundfrequenzintervall und Anzahl der Akzente werden ausgehend von einem linguistischen Experiment zu Bewertungssequenzen erläutert. Für eine Einbindung solcher nicht-neutraler Äußerungen in den Fremdsprachunterricht spricht auch die Häufigkeit dieser Äußerungen in Alltagssituationen

Action planning to improve energy efficiency in existing buildings

Klimaschutz ist ein allgegenwärtiges Thema, mit dem die Menschheit immer wieder in Verbindung tritt. Nicht nur im öffentlichen Verkehr und in der Industrie gelangen Mengen an Kohlenstoffdioxid in die Umwelt - auch Gebäude, vor allem Bestandsimmobilien, verantworten einen großen Teil der weltweiten CO2-Emissionen. Zudem gewinnt im Rahmen der Energiewende das Thema der Energieeffizienz beim Bauen stetig an Bedeutung. Durch innovative bautechnische Maßnahmen kann es gelingen, die schädlichen Emissionen zu reduzieren und den Energieverbrauch um ein Wesentliches zu senken. Die vorliegende Bachelorarbeit befasst sich mit den erforderlichen Maßnahmen zur Steigerung der Energieeffizienz beim Bauen im Bestand. Die erworbenen Kenntnisse werden anschließend an einem ausgewählten Sanierungsvorhaben veranschaulicht. Das Sanierungsobjekt ist ein Modellprojekt des BAKA Bundesverband Altbausanierung e.V. Berlin, welches anlässlich der Bildungsoffensive 2050 zu Forschungszwecken zur Verfügung gestellt wurde. Das Projekt wird vom Ingenieurbüro Integra Planen und Gestalten GmbH begleitet und voraussichtlich im Jahr 2016 umgesetzt

The influence of organizational structure on international purchasing success

International purchasing is one of the most important strategic topics for managers and attracts more and more interest among researchers. Yet, research often lacks strong theoretical and systematic insights on the intricacies of purchasing success and does not make enough use of advanced empirical methods. We apply a structural equation modeling technique to better research into the intricacies of higher or lower purchasing performance owing to different organizational design choices. We build our model on the resource-based view and on transaction cost economics and make use of survey data of purchasers engaging in international sourcing activities. We find four important drivers of purchasing performance, namely specialization, configuration, standardization and centralization. The importance of these drivers seems to be contingent on the sourcing environments, namely on the characteristics attributed to high cost and low cost countries

Resolution of lateral acoustic space assessed by electroencephalography and psychoacoustics

The encoding of auditory spatial acuity (measured as the precision to distinguish between two spatially distinct stimuli) by neural circuits in both auditory cortices is a matter of ongoing research. Here, the event-related potential (ERP) mismatch negativity (MMN), a sensitive indicator of preattentive auditory change detection, was used to tap into the underlying mechanism of cortical representation of auditory spatial information. We characterized the MMN response affected by the degree of spatial deviance in lateral acoustic space using a passive oddball paradigm. Two stimulation conditions (SCs)—specifically focusing on the investigation of the mid- and far-lateral acoustic space—were considered: (1) 65° left standard position with deviant positions at 70, 75, and 80°; and (2) 95° left standard position with deviant positions at 90, 85, and 80°. Additionally, behavioral data on the minimum audible angle (MAA) were acquired for the respective standard positions (65, 95° left) to quantify spatial discrimination in separating distinct sound sources. The two measurements disclosed the linkage between the (preattentive) MMN response and the (attentive) behavioral threshold. At 65° spatial deviations as small as 5° reliably elicited MMNs. Thereby, the MMN amplitudes monotonously increased as a function of spatial deviation. At 95°, spatial deviations of 15° were necessary to elicit a valid MMN. The behavioral data, however, yielded no difference in mean MAA thresholds for position 65 and 95°. The different effects of laterality on MMN responses and MAA thresholds suggest a role of spatial selective attention mechanisms particularly relevant in active discrimination of neighboring sound sources, especially in the lateral acoustic space
