    Measles on the Rise: Academic Institutions be Prepared

    Measles is a highly contagious, acute viral illness that can lead to serious complications and death. From January 1 through May 20, 2011, a total of 118 measles cases were reported from 23 states and New York City, the highest reported number for the same period since 1996. Patients ranged in age from 3 months to 68 years. Of the 118 cases, 105 unvaccinated persons were associated with importation from other countries. Transmission occurred in households, child care centers, shelters, schools, emergency departments, and at a large community event. It is important for those in academic institutions to understand measles and be prepared to deal with these kinds of diseases. Recommendations for preventing further measles transmissions include reminding health care providers to consider a diagnosis of measles in ill persons who have traveled overseas, to use infection control practices to prevent transmission in health-care and other group settings, and to promote high coverage with measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine for children as well as adult vaccination

    Managing Childhood Asthma in the School Environment

    It is often taken for granted that schools are instrumental in the spread of illness from child to child as well as from child to teacher. In addition to the nagging colds, stomach viruses and other temporary maladies, the school environment may actually contribute to some lifelong medical conditions. Many children face an unhealthy school environment on a daily basis, year after year, which may contribute to a condition called asthma. Asthma causes the airways of the lungs to swell and constrict and can often flare up without warning. Asthma is one of the top childhood disorders and is also a leading occupational disease of teachers and custodians. Many hours are spent in the classroom setting and over time this assumed ‘safe’ setting can turn into a “sick classroom” affecting those who are most vulnerable. The focus of this article is to examine the effects of asthma on school age children and provide information to empower teachers to facilitate change in the classroom environment. Working together with parents and administrators, teachers can make changes that will reduce asthma triggers and thereby reduce and possibly prevent severe asthmatic episodes

    Addressing the psycho-spiritual bereavement needs of HIV and AIDS orphans and other vulnerable adolescents : a narrative pastoral care approach

    ENGLISH: This study looks at the bereavement of adolescents left orphaned by and vulnerable to the HIV and Aids crisis that is crippling the continent of Africa. Their bereavement and the psycho-spiritual issues relating to this bereavement are examined by means of postfoundationalism as an approach to practical theology along with the narrative approach to research and therapy. This is done by integrating these approaches with the art of storytelling within the unique African context. By listening to the stories of ten adolescents under the care of PEN, a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), this research gives them the opportunity to express their own unique stories of bereavement. Stories that would otherwise have been silenced by the wave of bereavement in the wake of countless deaths worldwide due to the HIV and Aids infection. It looks holistically at the multiple losses these adolescents have suffered and consequently how this has affected them not only physically, but also especially emotionally and spiritually. In light of the above, this research attempts to show how these adolescents are in the process of – by means of storytelling – reformulating the story of their lives and the lives of those they care about in the true spirit of Ubuntu to find hope anew in the proverbial pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. AFRIKAANS: Hierdie studie fokus op die verlies wat tieners ervaar wat wees gelaat is deur die MIV en Vigs pandemie wat besig is om die vasteland van Afrika te verlam. Hulle rousmart en die gepaardgaande psigies-spirituele aangeleenthede word ondersoek deur middel van die postfondamentele benadering tot praktiese teologie in samehang met die narratiewe benadering tot navorsing en terapie. Dit word gedoen deur die integrasie van hierdie benaderings met die vertelkuns binne die unieke Afrika konteks. Deur te luister na die stories van tien tieners onder die sorg van PEN, ‘n Nie- Regeringsorganisasie (NRO), gun hierdie navorsing hulle die geleentheid om hul eie unieke stories van smart te vertel. Stories wat andersins verlore sou gegaan het in die golf van verlies wat volg op die ontelbare getal sterftes wêreldwyd as gevolg van MIV en Vigs besetting. Daar word holisties gekyk na die veelvoudige verliese wat hierdie tieners beleef het en gevolglik hoe dit hulle nie net fisies nie, maar ook emosioneel en geestelik beïnvloed.     Final Report: Tree Climbing Robot

    The motivation for this project was to minimize the injury and fatality rate of loggers across the world due to inclement weather, structurally unsound tress, and bulky equipment used to trim trees by designing a robot with the ability to climb trees and trim branches. Due to budget and time constraints, the scope of the project was limited to autonomously climbing and descending a tree trunk while avoiding branches; however, the possibility of future modifications was considered in the design. Design criteria included maneuverability, reversibility, simplicity, vertical speed, the ability to climb a tree of fixed diameter, and the ability to carry extra weight. The final design was a “caterpillar”-style robot, and the major modular subsystems of the design included clamping, extension, rotation, and branch detection. The final design, construction, and testing of each of these subsystems is discussed, as well as the testing of the system as a whole. Ultimately, the design was deemed a success, with the exception of the failure of the rotation system

    Factors related to medical students’ and doctors’ attitudes towards older patients: A systematic review

    Background:Studies have sought to identify the possible determinants of medical students’ and doctors’ attitudes towards older patients by examining relationships with a variety of factors: demographic; educational/training; exposure to older people; personality/cognitive; and job/career factors. This review collates and synthesises these findings. Methods: An electronic search of ten databases was performed (ABI/Inform, ASSIA, British Nursing Index, CINAHL, Informa Health, Medline, PsycINFO, Science Direct, Scopus, and Web of Science) through to 7 February 2017. Results: The main search identified 2332 articles; 37 studies met the eligibility criteria set. All included studies analysed self-reported attitudes based on correlational analyses or difference testing, therefore causation could not be determined. However, self-reported positive attitudes towards older patients were related to: (i) intrinsic motivation for studying medicine; (ii) increased preference for working with older patients; and (iii) good previous relationships with older people. Additionally, more positive attitudes were also reported in those with higher knowledge scores but these may relate to the use of a knowledge assessment which is an indirect measure of attitudes (i.e. Palmore’s Facts on Aging Quizzes). Four out of the five high quality studies included in this review reported more positive attitudes in females compared to males. Conclusion:This paper identifies factors associated with medical students’ and doctors’ positive attitudes towards older patients. Future research could bring greater clarity to the relationship between knowledge and attitudes by using a knowledge measure which is distinct from attitudes and also measures knowledge that is relevant to clinical care
