A subarcsecond resolution near-infrared study of Seyfert and `normal' galaxies: II. Morphology
We present a detailed study of the bar fraction in the CfA sample of Seyfert
galaxies, and in a carefully selected control sample of non-active galaxies, to
investigate the relation between the presence of bars and of nuclear activity.
To avoid the problems related to bar classification in the RC3, e.g.,
subjectivity, low resolution and contamination by dust, we have developed an
objective bar classification method, which we conservatively apply to our new
sub-arcsecond resolution near-infrared imaging data set (Peletier et al. 1999).
We are able to use stringent criteria based on radial profiles of ellipticity
and major axis position angle to determine the presence of a bar and its axial
ratio. Concentrating on non-interacting galaxies in our sample for which
morphological information can be obtained, we find that Seyfert hosts are
barred more often (79% +/- 7.5%) than the non-active galaxies in our control
sample (59% +/- 9%), a result which is at the 2.5 sigma significance level. The
fraction of non-axisymmetric hosts becomes even larger when interacting
galaxies are taken into account. We discuss the implications of this result for
the fueling of central activity by large-scale bars. This paper improves on
previous work by means of imaging at higher spatial resolution and by the use
of a set of stringent criteria for bar presence, and confirms that the use of
NIR is superior to optical imaging for detection of bars in disk galaxies.Comment: Latex, 3 figures, includes aaspptwo.sty, accepted for publication in

A confirmed location in the Galactic halo for the high-velocity cloud 'chain A'
The high-velocity clouds of atomic hydrogen, discovered about 35 years ago,
have velocities inconsistent with simple Galactic rotation models that
generally fit the stars and gas in the Milky Way disk. Their origins and role
in Galactic evolution remain poorly understood, largely for lack of information
on their distances. The high-velocity clouds might result from gas blown from
the Milky Way disk into the halo by supernovae, in which case they would enrich
the Galaxy with heavy elements as they fall back onto the disk. Alternatively,
they may consist of metal-poor gas -- remnants of the era of galaxy formation,
accreted by the Galaxy and reducing its metal abundance. Or they might be truly
extragalactic objects in the Local Group of galaxies. Here we report a firm
distance bracket for a large high-velocity cloud, Chain A, which places it in
the Milky Way halo (2.5 to 7 kiloparsecs above the Galactic plane), rather than
at an extragalactic distance, and constrains its gas mass to between 10^5 and 2

SAURON Observations of Disks in Early-Type Galaxies
We briefly describe the SAURON project, aimed at determining the intrinsic
shape and internal dynamics of spheroids. We focus here on the ability of
SAURON to identify gaseous and stellar disks and to measure their morphology
and kinematics. We illustrate some of our results with complete maps of

Fast and Slow Rotators: The build-up of the Red Sequence
Using the unique dataset obtained within the course of the SAURON project, a
radically new view of the structure, dynamics and stellar populations of
early-type galaxies has emerged. We show that galaxies come in two broad
flavours (slow and fast rotators), depending on whether or not they exhibit
clear large-scale rotation, as indicated via a robust measure of the specific
angular momentum of baryons. This property is also linked with other physical
characteristics of early-type galaxies, such as: the presence of dynamically
decoupled cores, orbital structure and anisotropy, stellar populations and dark
matter content. I here report on the observed link between this baryonic
angular momentum and a mass sequence, and how this uniquely relates to the
building of the red sequence via dissipative/dissipationless mergers and

Multiorgan failure after sickle cell vaso occlusive attack: integrated clinical and biological emergency
We describe the case of a 30-year-old patient, suffering from composite S/beta + sickle cell disease. He was hospitalized following a vaso-occlusive attack with acute bone pains. Despite an analgesic treatment and transfusion of three units of red blood cells, a non-regenerative anemia appeared within 24 hours. One day later an acute chest syndrome with atelectasis of the left lung and desaturation and multi-organ failure occurred and necessitated the patient\u27s intubation and required him to be placed in an artificial coma. A bronchoalveolar lavage was performed, which eliminated pneumonia but proved, after staining with oil red O, many neutral fatty acid microvacuoles in more than 80% of macrophages, suggesting a pulmonary fat embolism. The hypothesis of a bone marrow necrosis causing a pulmonary fat embolism was discussed and confirmed the next day by the characteristic appearance of the bone marrow. A therapeutic protocol associating iteratively bleeding and red blood cells transfusion was administered on the second day with the objective of maintaining haemoglobin S at less than 20% rate. Successive haemoglobin S assay was applied using a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technique with a quick response within one hour after transfusion or bleeding. This protocol resulted in an improvement in the patient\u27s condition, with a gradual normalization of vital signs and extubation twelve days later and discharge without sequelae twenty-five days later. The succession of rare but serious sickle cell complications anaemia which occurred in this patient could be controlled by adapting the laboratory for the clinical emergency
Comparison of spheroids formed by rat glioma stem cells and neural stem cells reveals differences in glucose metabolism and promising therapeutic applications
Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are thought to be partially responsible for cancer resistance to current therapies and tumor recurrence. Dichloroacetate (DCA), a compound capable of shifting metabolism from glycolysis to glucose oxidation, via an inhibition of pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase was used. We show that DCA is able to shift the pyruvate metabolism in rat glioma CSCs but has no effect in rat neural stem cells. DCA forces CSCs into oxidative phosphorylation but does not trigger the production of reactive oxygen species and consecutive anti-cancer apoptosis. However, DCA, associated with etoposide or irradiation, induced a Bax-dependent apoptosis in CSCs in vitro and decreased their proliferation in vivo. The former phenomenon is related to DCA-induced Foxo3 and p53 expression, resulting in the overexpression of BH3-only proteins (Bad, Noxa, and Puma), which in turn facilitates Bax-dependent apoptosis. Our results demonstrate that a small drug available for clinical studies potentiates the induction of apoptosis in glioma CSCs
Cancer risk management strategies and perceptions of unaffected women 5 years after predictive genetic testing for BRCA1/2 mutations
In a French national cohort of unaffected females carriers/non-carriers of a BRCA1/2 mutation, long-term preventive strategies and breast/ovarian cancer risk perceptions were followed up to 5 years after test result disclosure, using self-administered questionnaires. Response rate was 74%. Carriers (N=101) were younger (average age±SD=37±10) than non-carriers (N=145; 42±12). There were four management strategies that comprised 88% of the decisions made by the unaffected carriers: 50% opted for breast surveillance alone, based on either magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and other imaging (31%) or mammography alone (19%); 38% opted for either risk reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) and breast surveillance, based on MRI and other imaging (28%) or mammography alone (10%). The other three strategies were: risk reducing mastectomy (RRM) and RRSO (5%), RRM alone (2%) and neither RRM/RRSO nor surveillance (6%). The results obtained for various age groups are presented here. Non-carriers often opted for screening despite their low cancer risk. Result disclosure increased carriers' short-term high breast/ovarian cancer risk perceptions (P⩽0.02) and decreased non-carriers' short- and long-term perceptions (P<0.001). During follow-up, high breast cancer risk perceptions increased with time among those who had no RRM and decreased in the opposite case; high ovarian cancer risk perceptions increased further with time among those who had no RRSO and decreased in the opposite case; RRSO did not affect breast cancer risk perceptions. Informed decision-making involves letting women know whether opting for RRSO and breast MRI surveillance is as effective in terms of survival as RRM and RRSO
Supermassive black holes from OASIS and SAURON integral-field kinematics
Supermassive black holes are a key element in our understanding of how
galaxies form. Most of the progress in this very active field of research is
based on just ~30 determinations of black hole mass, accumulated over the past
decade. We illustrate how integral-field spectroscopy, and in particular our
