Guidelines for supporting children with disabilities' play: methodologies, tools, and contexts

    Get PDF
All children want to play. This is also true for children with disabilities. Facilitating their engagement in play, whatever children’s capacities, is a central premise of people who view play as fundamental for their development and well-being. Play for the sake of play, just for recreational pleasure and enjoyment, without any secondary goal. In this book you’ll find guidelines to support children with disabilities’ play. They can be a useful tool for ensuring that children with disabilities can fully enjoy their right to play, for improving the quality of children’s play, enhancing their play satisfaction and participation, and reducing play deprivation. Written in a lay-person language, providing ready-to-use information, this book is for parents, teachers, rehabilitation professionals, toy manufacturers, policy makers and in general for all of those interested in the topic of play for children with disabilities. This publication results from the research and work of a transdisciplinary team, all participants in the COST Action “LUDI - Play for Children with Disabilities”.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The Effects of a Single Season of Play on the Knee Cartilage Health of NCAA Football Linemen

Articular cartilage covers the ends of bones where they come together to form joints; thereby supporting the joints under applied loads and allowing a full range of motion. Cartilage has a limited ability to self-repair however, and over time, areas of localized damage, or cartilage defects, can cause pain, stiffness, and loss of functionality. Football linemen in particular are at an increased risk for knee cartilage defects and early-onset osteoarthritis (OA). Therefore, the purpose of this project is to determine which factors predict or indicate changes in the knee cartilage health of NCAA football linemen over one season. 15 linemen were recruited for this study and each participated in the preseason evaluation. Only 12 of the players, however, returned for the postseason session. Each evaluation included magnetic resonance images (MRI) of each knee, 6 self-administered surveys, and walking trials in a motion capture lab. Player profiles are used to organize this information which includes quantified MRI scores, self-reported clinical assessments on quality of life, and biomechanical parameters from gait analysis from each evaluation. Of the 12 players who returned for postseason evaluation, only 8 provided complete profiles and 2 of these experienced a decline in knee cartilage health over the season. Sets of independent survey and kinematic variables were grouped and compared using a sequence of stepwise and general regression tests to determine which variables correspond to changes in cartilage health. The results of this study show the possibility of overarching trends among subjects with similar cartilage health, but a larger study could provide more conclusive information about the relationships among changes in MRI, survey scores, and gait kinematics. This study should include a larger number of participants over a number of years to fully capture the changes in self-determined well-being and movement patterns that influence changes in knee cartilage health in NCAA football linemen. No embargoAcademic Major: Mechanical Engineerin

Regulation of miR-9 by Ethanol and the Effects of miR-9 Inhibition

    Get PDF
Alcohol addiction is a complex disease that alters molecular pathways within the brain and leads to the development of alcohol tolerance. One of alcohol\u27s primary targets in the brain is BK potassium channels. BK channels are alternatively spliced and the splice variant expression is regulated by miR-9. Exposure to alcohol upregulates miR-9, an miRNA that modifies the cellular composition of BK channel isoforms and contributes to alcohol tolerance. The molecular mechanisms by which miR-9 is upregulated upon alcohol exposure are currently unknown. We hypothesize that miR-9 upregulation occurs at the transcriptional and/or post-transcriptional level and that inhibition of miR-9 will diminish the acute and long-term effects of alcoholism. We will investigate whether alcohol upregulates miR-9 through interactions with the miR-9 promoter and attempt to identify alcohol sensitive regions of the miR-9 promoter. Another mechanism by which alcohol may upregulate miR-9 is by directing post-transcriptional miRNA maturation through interactions with the enzymes Drosha or Dicer. Lastly, we will inhibit miR-9 expression through RNAi to characterize its role in ethanol sensitivity. Identification of the mechanism underlying miR-9 upregulation after exposure to alcohol will not only provide further insight into alcohol addiction, but may also contribute to the development of potential therapeutic treatments for alcoholism

Pin It, Share It, Like It, Retweet It: California Agriculture Teachers Perceived Usefulness of Social Media in their Professional Learning

    Get PDF
Limited research exists on practicing secondary teachers use of professional learning networks (PLN) and their role in teachers professional learning continuum. The purpose of this research was to identify California agriculture teachers perceived usefulness of social media in their professional learning. Adult learners are unique in several ways: need to know, the learner’s self-concept, unique life experiences, willingness to learn, desired teaching method and motivating factors. Because social media provides a platform that allows educators to network with other professionals in a way that facilitates the exploration of their personal learning objectives and other characteristics of adult learners, it should be considered professional learning. A digital survey utilizing a Likert scale was distributed to a sample of 464 California agriculture teachers, 164 teachers completed the instrument. Constructs of perceived usefulness of professional social media use, as well as their perceived usefulness of school sponsored professional learning were compared to social media engagement and several other demographic characteristics relating to the teacher and their teaching assignment. Although there was variation in perceived usefulness of social media in relation to gender, age group, career phase, and teaching assignment, there was no difference between groups by credential type, highest degree, and teacher isolation. There was also a significant difference between teachers perceived usefulness of professional social media use when compared to their school sponsored professional learning. Predictors for perceived social media use were perceived usefulness of school sponsored professional learning, social media use, participation in content specific professional learning, career stage, and teaching assignment. The findings of this study quantitatively support literature relating to teachers’ positive behaviors and attitudes toward social media use in their professional learning

As a result of the rapid globalization of the world’s economy, more and more companies are conducting business on an international scale. Consequently, an increasing number of corporate employees are being sent abroad on global assignments designed to fulfill a variety of business objectives. This trend has, in turn, led to the rise of an elite group of global employees characterized by their international mobility and intercultural competencies as well as to the development of an international relocation industry providing an extensive range of services. Designed as a terminological work, this thesis not only outlines the essential concepts of the subject area in the overview section but also provides an extensive glossary of English and German terms used in the field of international relocation. In the glossary section of this work, terms are presented in English and German with definitions and/or context entries. Main entries, related terms and synonyms are listed in the English and German indexes for easy reference to their appearance in the text of both the overview and glossary sections

This study is concerned with the comparison of grade point averages and personal adjustment scores of a sample of disadvantaged students and a random sample of their classmates. The main objective is to determine if being economically "disadvantaged" is detrimental to the academic achievement and personal adjustment of a student. The Bell Adjustment Inventory with six areas of adjustment is used to identify the personal adjustment. A further aspect of the study is to determine if higher grade point averages correspond with better personal adjustment scores and if lower grade point averages correspond with poor personal adjustment.Home Economics Educatio

Relationship between students’ economic, cultural, and social status, school climate and student achievement in Indonesia

    Get PDF
PISA 2018 data shows that, in Indonesia, the relationship between students’ economic, cultural, and social status and their scores on reading achievement is weak. However, there is great variation between schools in average reading achievement with over 40% of the explainable variation in reading achievement being between-schools. In addition, in Indonesia, there is low social diversity across schools (students within schools are likely to be of similar economic, cultural, and social background). These conditions raise the question of whether school factors play a role – specifically whether school climate has a compensating, mediating or moderating effect on the relationship between students’ and schools’ economic, cultural, and social status and achievement. Using regression analysis, it was found that, in Indonesian schools, the composition of student body in terms of economic, cultural, and social status plays a significant role in explaining differences in reading achievement between schools. School climate was found to compensate and mediate the relationship between school economic, cultural, and social status and school reading achievement, particularly those dimensions related to classroom climate, student respect for diversity, school discrimination climate, student sense of belonging and teacher support and directed instruction practices. Only student sense of belonging was found to play moderating role in the relationship between school economic, cultural, and social status and school reading achievement, a finding that requires further investigation.https://research.acer.edu.au/ical/1001/thumbnail.jp
