    Get PDF

Post-handover housing defects: sources and origins

    Get PDF
In Spain, the high levels of inexperienced workers and the long chains of subcontracting contribute to the poor quality of dwellings. Althoughthe Ley reguladora de la subcontratación en el Sector de la Construcción (subcontracting law) has established quality measures, the number of customer complaints is still increasing. In this paper, a total of 2,351 posthandover defects derived from four Spanish builders and seven residential developments are classi fi ed according to their source and origin. The research reveals that the most common defects identi fi ed by customers at posthandover were derived from bad workmanship and were related to construction errors and omissions. Typical defects were foundtoincludeincorrectinstallation, appearancedefects, andmissinganitemortaskmainlyrelatedto fi nishingandconsideredtobeminor. No defects were caused by poor design because they are mainly detected and resolved during construction or become apparent after some years of use. This study demonstrates the negative impact of redoing defective work during the fi nal stages of construction and provides knowledge to de fi ne measures to improve the quality of the fi nished buildings, such as understanding customer expectations and preferences, training programs for workers, specialization of subcontractors, and tightening external controls prior to handover.Postprint (author's final draft

Detection of gamma rays of likely jet origin in Cygnus X-1

Aims: Probe the high-energy (>>60 MeV) emission from the black hole X-ray binary system, Cygnus X-1, and investigate its origin. Methods: We analysed 7.5 yr of data by Fermi/LAT with the latest PASS8 software version. Results: We report the detection of a signal at \sim8 σ\sigma statistical significance spatially coincident with Cygnus X-1 and a luminosity above 60 MeV of 5.5×\times1033^{33} erg s1^{-1}. The signal is correlated with the hard X-ray flux: the source is observed at high energies only during the hard X-ray spectral state, when the source is known to display persistent, relativistic radio emitting jets. The energy spectrum, extending up to \sim20 GeV without any sign of spectral break, is well fitted by a power-law function with a photon index of 2.3±\pm0.2. There is a hint of orbital flux variability, with high-energy emission mostly coming around the superior conjunction. Conclusions: We detected GeV emission from Cygnus X-1 and probed that the emission is most likely associated with the relativistic jets. The evidence of flux orbital variability points to the anisotropic inverse Compton on stellar photons as the mechanism at work, thus constraining the emission region to a distance 1011101310^{11}-10^{13} cm from the black hole.Comment: accepted A\&A (9 pages and 7 figures

Educate the way of looking for multiple literacy

The high consumption of screens to which the citizenship is exposed every day does not guarantee that, for the simple fact of consuming, of consuming information and images, we could fulfil a critical literacidad (Cassany, 2011) of the multiplicity messages and codes that run for them. Increasingly, the dividing line between the virtual reality and the vital experience (Aguaded, 2012) is more confused. From an educational point of view, the media education (Ambròs and Breu, 2011) still is not a reality, but a lot of way is absent for crossing and to reach the multiple literacy (UNESCO, 2012). Devoured by the global screen (Lipovetsky and Serroy, 2009), we claim the importance of the cinematographic education to learn the syntax and the audio-visual language, to endow the discentes of keys to understand better the history, the company, the life. The educational portal Cinescola offers more than hundred didactic free offers on movies in his tenth anniversary. Following his method of analysis, we show a sequence of reading of the movie Akeelah and the Bee (Atchinson, 2006), proved in different educational levels

Correspondence matching in unorganized 3D point clouds using Convolutional Neural Networks

    Get PDF
This document presents a novel method based in Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to obtain correspondence matchings between sets of keypoints of several unorganized 3D point cloud captures, independently of the sensor used. The proposed technique extends a state-of-the-art method for correspondence matching in standard 2D images to sets of unorganized 3D point clouds. The strategy consists in projecting the 3D neighborhood of the keypoint onto an RGBD patch, and the classi cation of patch pairs using CNNs. The objective evaluation of the proposed 3D point matching based in CNNs outperforms existing 3D feature descriptors, especially when intensity or color data is available.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Influence of pH and a porphyrin ligand on the stability of a G-quadruplex structure within a duplex segment near the promoter region of the SMARCA4 gene

    Get PDF
In a previous work, the formation of G-quadruplex structures in a 44-nucleotide long sequence found near the promoter region of the SMARCA4 gene was reported. The central 25 nucleotides were able to fold into an antiparallel G-quadruplex structure, the stability of which was pH-dependent. In the present work, the effect of the presence of lateral nucleotides and the complementary cytosine-rich strand on the stability of this G-quadruplex has been characterized. Moreover, the role of the model ligand TMPyP4 has been studied. Spectroscopic and separation techniques, as well as multivariate data analysis methods, have been used with these purposes. The results have shown that stability of the G-quadruplex as a function of pH or temperature is greatly reduced in the presence of the lateral nucleotides. The influence of the complementary strand does not prevent the formation of the G-quadruplex. Moreover, attempts to modulate the equilibria by an external ligand led us to determine the influence of the TMPyP4 porphyrin on these complex equilibria. This study could eventually help to understand the regulation of SMARCA4 expression

Global deterioration scale; Down syndrome; Alzheimer’s diseaseEscala de deteriorament global; Síndrome de Down; Malaltia d'AlzheimerEscala de deterioro global; Síndrome de Down; Enfermedad de AlzheimerThe aim of this study is to adapt and validate the global deterioration scale (GDS) for the systematic tracking of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) progression in a population with Down syndrome (DS). A retrospective dual-center cohort study was conducted with 83 participants with DS (46.65 ± 5.08 years) who formed the primary diagnosis (PD) group: cognitive stability (n = 48), mild cognitive impairment (n = 24), and Alzheimer’s disease (n = 11). The proposed scale for adults with DS (GDS-DS) comprises six stages, from cognitive and/or behavioral stability to advanced AD. Two neuropsychologists placed the participants of the PD group in each stage of the GDS-DS according to cognitive, behavioral and daily living skills data. Inter-rater reliability in staging with the GDS-DS was excellent (ICC = 0.86; CI: 0.80–0.93), and the agreement with the diagnosis categories of the PD group ranged from substantial to excellent with κ values of 0.82 (95% CI: 0.73–0.92) and 0.85 (95% CI: 0.72, 0.99). Performance with regard to the CAMCOG-DS total score and orientation subtest of the Barcelona test for intellectual disability showed a slight progressive decline across all the GDS-DS stages. The GDS-DS scale is a sensitive tool for staging the progression of AD in the DS population, with special relevance in daily clinical practice. This research was funded by the Spanish Government, grant number PI12/02019, PSI-2014-53524-P. In times of crisis it is good and necessary reflecting on some basic elements of our profession and to take this opportunity to relate the different actors who are constructing our daily discipline. On the one hand, the academic side, this includes professors who are responsible for teaching and research, and students, who are the future of the profession. On the other hand, the professional world comprising the heads of government and social institutions that provides social services and social welfare, and the professionals who carry out their functions. From the relationship between this set of stakeholders arise difficulties and possibilities. It is essential that the Social Work make a set of approaches that turn their threats into opportunities and strengthen our contribution to society.</p

Near-field chipless-RFID system with high data capacity for security and authentication applications

    Get PDF
A high data capacity chipless radio frequency identification (chipless-RFID) system, useful for security and authentication applications, is presented in this paper. Reading is based on the near-field coupling between the tag, a chain of identical split-ring resonators (SRRs) printed on a (typically flexible) dielectric substrate (e.g., liquid crystal polymer, plastic, and paper), and the reader. Encoding is achieved by the presence or absence of SRRs at predefined (equidistant) positions in the chain, and tag identification (ID) is based on sequential bit reading. Namely, the tag must be longitudinally displaced, at short distance, over the reader, a microstrip line loaded with an SRR and fed by a harmonic signal. By this means, the harmonic signal is amplitude modulated, and the (ID) code is contained in the envelope function, which can be obtained by means of an envelope detector. With this system, tag reading requires proximity with the reader, but this is not an issue in many applications within the domain of security and authentication (e.g., secure paper for corporate documents and certificates). Several circularly shaped 40-bit encoders (implemented in a commercial microwave substrate), and the corresponding reader, are designed and fabricated as proof-of-concept demonstrators. Strategies for programming the tags and a first proof-of-concept chipless-RFID tag fabricated on plastic substrate through inkjet printing are included in this paper
