Tropical Dominating Sets in Vertex-Coloured Graphs
Given a vertex-coloured graph, a dominating set is said to be tropical if
every colour of the graph appears at least once in the set. Here, we study
minimum tropical dominating sets from structural and algorithmic points of
view. First, we prove that the tropical dominating set problem is NP-complete
even when restricted to a simple path. Then, we establish upper bounds related
to various parameters of the graph such as minimum degree and number of edges.
We also give upper bounds for random graphs. Last, we give approximability and
inapproximability results for general and restricted classes of graphs, and
establish a FPT algorithm for interval graphs.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figure
Non-functional immunoglobulin G transcripts in a case of hyper-immunoglobulin M syndrome similar to type 4
86% of immunoglobulin G (IgG) heavy-chain gene transcripts were found to be non-functional in the peripheral blood B cells of a patient initially diagnosed with common variable immunodeficiency, who later developed raised IgM, whereas no non-functionally rearranged transcripts were found in the cells of seven healthy control subjects. All the patient's IgM heavy-chain and κ light-chain transcripts were functional, suggesting that either non-functional rearrangements were being selectively class-switched to IgG, or that receptor editing was rendering genes non-functional after class-switching. The functional γ-chain sequences showed a normal rate of somatic hypermutation while non-functional sequences contained few somatic mutations, suggesting that most came from cells that had no functional gene and therefore were not receiving signals for hypermutation. However, apoptosis of peripheral blood lymphocytes was not impaired. No defects have been found in any of the genes currently known to be responsible for hyper-IgM syndrome but the phenotype fits best to type 4
Genomic Expansion of Magnetotactic Bacteria Reveals an Early Common Origin of Magnetotaxis with Lineage-specific Evolution
The origin and evolution of magnetoreception, which in diverse prokaryotes and protozoa is known as magnetotaxis and enables these microorganisms to detect Earth’s magnetic field for orientation and navigation, is not well understood in evolutionary biology. The only known prokaryotes capable of sensing the geomagnetic field are magnetotactic bacteria (MTB), motile microorganisms that biomineralize intracellular, membrane-bounded magnetic single-domain crystals of either magnetite (Fe3O4) or greigite (Fe3S4) called magnetosomes. Magnetosomes are responsible for magnetotaxis in MTB. Here we report the first large-scale metagenomic survey of MTB from both northern and southern hemispheres combined with 28 genomes from uncultivated MTB. These genomes expand greatly the coverage of MTB in the Proteobacteria, Nitrospirae, and Omnitrophica phyla, and provide the first genomic evidence of MTB belonging to the Zetaproteobacteria and “Candidatus Lambdaproteobacteria” classes. The gene content and organization of magnetosome gene clusters, which are physically grouped genes that encode proteins for magnetosome biosynthesis and organization, are more conserved within phylogenetically similar groups than between different taxonomic lineages. Moreover, the phylogenies of core magnetosome proteins form monophyletic clades. Together, these results suggest a common ancient origin of iron-based (Fe3O4 and Fe3S4) magnetotaxis in the domain Bacteria that underwent lineage-specific evolution, shedding new light on the origin and evolution of biomineralization and magnetotaxis, and expanding significantly the phylogenomic representation of MTB
Holographic Magnetic Star
A warm fermionic AdS star under a homogeneous magnetic field is explored. We
obtain the relativistic Landau levels by using Dirac equation and use the
Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equation to study the physical profiles of the
star. Bulk properties such as sound speed, adiabatic index, and entropy density
within the star are calculated analytically and numerically. Bulk temperature
increases the mass limit of the AdS star but external magnetic field has the
opposite effect. The results are partially interpreted in terms of the
pre-thermalization process of the gauge matter at the AdS boundary after the
mass injection. The entropy density is found to demonstrate similar temperature
dependence as the magnetic black brane in the AdS in certain limits regardless
of the different nature of the bulk and Hawking temperatures. Total entropy of
the AdS star is also found to be an increasing function of the bulk temperature
and a decreasing function of the magnetic field, similar behaviour to the mass
limit. Since both total entropy and mass limit are global quantities, they
could provide some hints to the value of entropy and energy of the dual gauge

Self-Reported Occupational Exposure to HIV and Factors Influencing its Management Practice: A Study of Healthcare Workers in Tumbi and Dodoma Hospitals, Tanzania.
Blood borne infectious agents such as hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human immune deficiency virus (HIV) constitute a major occupational hazard for healthcare workers (HCWs). To some degree it is inevitable that HCWs sustain injuries from sharp objects such as needles, scalpels and splintered bone during execution of their duties. However, in Tanzania, there is little or no information on factors that influence the practice of managing occupational exposure to HIV by HCWs. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of self-reported occupational exposure to HIV among HCWs and explore factors that influence the practice of managing occupational exposure to HIV by HCWs in Tanzania. Self-administered questionnaire was designed to gather information of healthcare workers' occupational exposures in the past 12 months and circumstances in which these injuries occurred. Practice of managing occupational exposure was assessed by the following questions: Nearly half of the HCWs had experienced at least one occupational injury in the past 12 months. Though most of the occupational exposures to HIV were experienced by female nurses, non-medical hospital staff received PEP more frequently than nurses and doctors. Doctors and nurses frequently encountered occupational injuries in surgery room and labor room respectively. HCWs with knowledge on the possibility of HIV transmission and those who knew whom to contact in event of occupational exposure to HIV were less likely to have poor practice of managing occupational exposure. Needle stick injuries and splashes are common among HCWs at Tumbi and Dodoma hospitals. Knowledge of the risk of HIV transmission due to occupational exposure and knowing whom to contact in event of exposure predicted practice of managing the exposure. Thus provision of health education on occupational exposure may strengthen healthcare workers' practices to manage occupational exposure
Parity Doubling and the S Parameter Below the Conformal Window
We describe a lattice simulation of the masses and decay constants of the
lowest-lying vector and axial resonances, and the electroweak S parameter, in
an SU(3) gauge theory with and 6 fermions in the fundamental
representation. The spectrum becomes more parity doubled and the S parameter
per electroweak doublet decreases when is increased from 2 to 6,
motivating study of these trends as is increased further, toward the

Rabies screen reveals GPe control of cocaine-triggered plasticity.
Identification of neural circuit changes that contribute to behavioural plasticity has routinely been conducted on candidate circuits that were preselected on the basis of previous results. Here we present an unbiased method for identifying experience-triggered circuit-level changes in neuronal ensembles in mice. Using rabies virus monosynaptic tracing, we mapped cocaine-induced global changes in inputs onto neurons in the ventral tegmental area. Cocaine increased rabies-labelled inputs from the globus pallidus externus (GPe), a basal ganglia nucleus not previously known to participate in behavioural plasticity triggered by drugs of abuse. We demonstrated that cocaine increased GPe neuron activity, which accounted for the increase in GPe labelling. Inhibition of GPe activity revealed that it contributes to two forms of cocaine-triggered behavioural plasticity, at least in part by disinhibiting dopamine neurons in the ventral tegmental area. These results suggest that rabies-based unbiased screening of changes in input populations can identify previously unappreciated circuit elements that critically support behavioural adaptations
An Exact Fluctuating 1/2-BPS Configuration
This work explores the role of thermodynamic fluctuations in the two
parameter giant and superstar configurations characterized by an ensemble of
arbitrary liquid droplets or irregular shaped fuzzballs. Our analysis
illustrates that the chemical and state-space geometric descriptions exhibit an
intriguing set of exact pair correction functions and the global correlation
lengths. The first principle of statistical mechanics shows that the possible
canonical fluctuations may precisely be ascertained without any approximation.
Interestingly, our intrinsic geometric study exemplifies that there exist exact
fluctuating 1/2-BPS statistical configurations which involve an ensemble of
microstates describing the liquid droplets or fuzzballs. The Gaussian
fluctuations over an equilibrium chemical and state-space configurations
accomplish a well-defined, non-degenerate, curved and regular intrinsic
Riemannian manifolds for all physically admissible domains of black hole
parameters. An explicit computation demonstrates that the underlying chemical
correlations involve ordinary summations, whilst the state-space correlations
may simply be depicted by standard polygamma functions. Our construction
ascribes definite stability character to the canonical energy fluctuations and
to the counting entropy associated with an arbitrary choice of excited boxes

Holographic dilepton production in a thermalizing plasma
We determine the out-of-equilibrium production rate of dileptons at rest in
strongly coupled N=4 Super Yang-Mills plasma using the AdS/CFT correspondence.
Thermalization is achieved via the gravitational collapse of a thin shell of
matter in AdS_5 space and the subsequent formation of a black hole, which we
describe in a quasistatic approximation. Prior to thermalization, the dilepton
spectral function is observed to oscillate as a function of frequency, but the
amplitude of the oscillations decreases when thermal equilibrium is approached.
At the same time, we follow the flow of the quasinormal spectrum of the

ABJM Dibaryon Spectroscopy
We extend the proposal for a detailed map between wrapped D-branes in Anti-de
Sitter space and baryon-like operators in the associated dual conformal field
theory provided in hep-th/0202150 to the recently formulated AdS_4 \times
CP^3/ABJM correspondence. In this example, the role of the dibaryon operator of
the 3-dimensional CFT is played by a D4-brane wrapping a CP^2 \subset CP^3.
This topologically stable D-brane in the AdS_4 \times CP^3 is nothing but
one-half of the maximal giant graviton on CP^3.Comment: 26 page
