    Interface alloying and magnetic properties of Fe/Rh multilayers

    Rh(20 Å)/57Fe(tFe) multilayers with Fe thicknesses tFe of 2, 5, 10, and 15 Å prepared by alternate evaporation in UHV have been investigated by x-ray diffraction (XRD), Mössbauer spectroscopy, and SQUID magnetometry. First- and second-order superstructure Bragg peaks (but no higher-order peaks) in small-angle XRD patterns suggest some compositional modulation. Mössbauer spectra taken at 4.2 K are characterized by a distribution P(Bhf) of hyperfine fields Bhf. Peaks observed in the P(Bhf) curves near 17 and 35 T are assigned to an fcc-RhFe interface alloy (~7–24 at. % Fe) with spin-glasslike properties and to a disordered ferromagnetic bcc-FeRh alloy (~96 at. % Fe), respectively. The magnetic transition temperature of the fcc alloy was found to be 23 and 45 K for tFe=2 and 5 Å, respectively, and Bhf follows a T3/2 law. For tFe=2 Å, spin-glasslike behavior was observed by magnetometry. Journal of Applied Physics is copyrighted by The American Institute of Physics

    First-principles calculations of 2x2 reconstructions of GaN(0001) surfaces involving N, Al, Ga, In, and as atoms

    The ab initio studies presented here employed a pseudopotential-plane-wave method in order to obtain the minimum-energy configurations of various 22 GaN0001 surfaces involving N, Al, Ga, In, and As atoms. Comparison of the various possible reconstructions allows predictions to be made regarding the most energetically favorable configurations. Such comparisons depend on the value of the effective chemical potential of each atomic species, which can be related directly to experimental growth conditions. The most stable structure as a function of chemical potentials is determined. Based on these results we have characterized the effect of N in the adlayer surface and the stability dependence with number of substitutions as a function of the model employed and the possible surfactant character of some of the added atoms. Surface phase diagrams as a function of the chemical potential have been calculated to show the phase transition between the different reconstructions

    Stability of the photonic band gap in the presence of disorder

    The photonic eigenmodes near a band gap of a type of one-dimensional disordered photonic crystal have been investigated statistically. For the system considered, it is found that the tail of the density of states entering the band gap is characterized by a certain penetration depth, which is proportional to the disorder parameter. A quantitative relation between the relative penetration depth, the relative width of the photonic band gap, and the disorder has been found. It is apparent that there is a certain level of disorder below which the probability of the appearance of photonic eigenstates at the center of the photonic band gap essentially vanishes. Below the threshold, the ensemble-averaged transmission at the center of the photonic band gap does not change significantly with increasing disorder, but above threshold it increases much more rapidly.     Enhanced THz transmission apertures through sub-wavelength annular apertures

    We report on the development of a surface micromachined process for the fabrication of coaxial apertures surrounded by periodic grooves. The process uses a combination of copper electroforming and the negative epoxy based resist, SU8, as a thin flexible substrate. The device dimensions are suitable for the implementation of filters at THz frequencies, and measurements show a pass band centred around 1.5 THz. These devices could form the basis of the next generation of THz biosensors

The main data have to be represented, as they allow readers to understand contents clearly. Sentences like “The paper reports...” or “The authors describe...” have to be avoided as well as any generic statements
