Methodological problems in solvency assessment of an insurance company
The recent wide development and changes in insurance markets highlighted the necessity to map out the solvency analysis in a more complete framework. The approach we present in the paper comes up with an integrated analysis of the risk profile of an insurance business, taking into account the actual European directives about solvency assessment. The aim of the paper is to construct a methodology apt to incorporate properly the effect of the risk sources in calculating mathematical provisions related to a portfolio of insurance policies.Life insurance, financial risk, demographic risk, capital adequacy, reserves, conditional random processes
Amalthea: a database of isotopic measurements on archaeological and forensic tooth dentine increments
malthea is a global database of stable isotope measurements on tooth increments from archaeological and modern individuals spanning more than 7,000 years. The dataset includes c. 15,000 isotopic measurements from more than 700 individuals. In addition to isotopic data the database also includes information on the archaeological context and osteological features of recorded individuals. This database allows for the reconstruction of individual iso-biographies. In particular, the database allows for meta-studies on childhood diet and nutrition across time and space. The database is a collaborative effort and will be regularly updated.(1) Overview - Context - Spatial coverage - Temporal coverage (2) Methods - Steps - Sampling strategy - Quality control - Constrains (3) Dataset description - Data identifiers - Bibliography - Site description - Description of individual - Chronology - Sampling methods - Description of increments - Stable isotope and elemental measurements - Object name - Dta type - Format names and versions - Creation dates - Dataset creators - Language - License - Repository location - Publication date (4) Reuse potentia
Risk-adjusted performance indicators in life insurance
The paper approaches the potential of risk-adjusted performance indicators in life insurance, with special reference to a structured policy. The final issue is the computation of risk adjusted indicators as a tool to evaluate the portfolio given a policy structure. The
computation of such indicator could be suitable for the appraisal of both portfolio optimization and potential profits of the structured policy. The selection tool is put into an asset and liability management decision making context, where the relationship between
expected surplus and capital at risk are compared.
The analysis is applied to a structured temporary annuity and is treated by means of Monte
Carlo simulations
Presenting the Compendium Isotoporum Medii Aevi, a multi-isotope database for Medieval Europe
Here we present the Compendium Isotoporum Medii Aevi (CIMA), an open-access database gathering more than 50,000 isotopic measurements for bioarchaeological samples located within Europe and its margins, and dating between 500 and 1500 CE. This multi-isotope (δ13C, δ15N, δ34S, δ18O, and 87Sr/86Sr) archive of measurements on human, animal, and plant archaeological remains also includes a variety of supporting information that offer, for instance, a taxonomic characterization of the samples, their location, and chronology, in addition to data on social, religious, and political contexts. Such a dataset can be used to identify data gaps for future research and to address multiple research questions, including those related with studies on medieval human lifeways (i.e. human subsistence, spatial mobility), characterization of paleo-environmental and -climatic conditions, and on plant and animal agricultural management practices. Brief examples of such applications are given here and we also discuss how the integration of large volumes of isotopic data with other types of archaeological and historical data can improve our knowledge of medieval Europe. Background & Summary Methods Data Records Technical Validation Usage Note
The identification of the optical companion to the binary millisecond pulsar J0610-2100 in the Galactic field
We have used deep V and R images acquired at the ESO Very Large Telescope to
identify the optical companion to the binary pulsar PSR J0610-2100, one of the
black-widow millisecond pulsars recently detected by the Fermi Gamma-ray
Telescope in the Galactic plane. We found a faint star (V~26.7) nearly
coincident (\delta r ~0".28) with the pulsar nominal position. This star is
visible only in half of the available images, while it disappears in the
deepest ones (those acquired under the best seeing conditions), thus indicating
that it is variable. Although our observations do not sample the entire orbital
period (P=0.28 d) of the pulsar, we found that the optical modulation of the
variable star nicely correlates with the pulsar orbital period and describes a
well defined peak (R~25.6) at \Phi=0.75, suggesting a modulation due to the
pulsar heating. We tentatively conclude that the companion to PSR J0610-2100 is
a heavily ablated very low mass star (~ 0.02Msun) that completely filled its
Roche Lobe.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures - Accepted for pubblication in Ap
The puzzling properties of the Helium White Dwarf orbiting the millisecond pulsar PSR J1911-5958A in NGC 6752
We have used phase-resolved high-resolution images and low resolution spectra
taken at the ESO Very Large Telescope, to study the properties of the low-mass
Helium White Dwarf companion to the millisecond pulsar \psr (hereafter COM
J19115958A), in the halo of the Galactic Globular Cluster NGC 6752. The
radial velocity curve confirms that \com is orbiting the pulsar and allows to
derive a systemic velocity of the binary system nicely in agreement with that
of NGC 6752. This strongly indicates that the system is a member of the
cluster, despite its very offset position ( core radii) with respect
to the core. Constraints on the orbital inclination (\gapp 70^\circ) and
pulsar mass () are derived from the mass ratio
and photometric properties of COM J19115958A.
The light curve in B-band shows two phases of unequal brightening
(mag and 0.2, respectively) located close to quadratures and
superimposed on an almost steady baseline emission: this feature is quite
surprising and needs to be further investigated.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in APJletter
