    Magnetism of one-dimensional Wigner lattices and its impact on charge order

    The magnetic phase diagram of the quarter-filled generalized Wigner lattice with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor hopping t_1 and t_2 is explored. We find a region at negative t_2 with fully saturated ferromagnetic ground states that we attribute to kinetic exchange. Such interaction disfavors antiferromagnetism at t_2 <0 and stems from virtual excitations across the charge gap of the Wigner lattice, which is much smaller than the Mott-Hubbard gap proportional to U. Remarkably, we find a strong dependence of the charge structure factor on magnetism even in the limit U to infinity, in contrast to the expectation that charge ordering in the Wigner lattice regime should be well described by spinless fermions. Our results, obtained using the density-matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization, can be transparently explained by means of an effective low-energy Hamiltonian

    Stability of quantum states of finite macroscopic systems against classical noises, perturbations from environments, and local measurements

    We study the stability of quantum states of macroscopic systems of finite volume V, against weak classical noises (WCNs), weak perturbations from environments (WPEs), and local measurements (LMs). We say that a pure state is `fragile' if its decoherence rate is anomalously great, and `stable against LMs' if the result of a LM is not affected by another LM at a distant point. By making full use of the locality and huge degrees of freedom, we show the following: (i) If square fluctuation of every additive operator is O(V) or less for a pure state, then it is not fragile in any WCNs or WPEs. (ii) If square fluctuations of some additive operators are O(V^2) for a pure state, then it is fragile in some WCNs or WPEs. (iii) If a state (pure or mixed) has the `cluster property,' then it is stable against LMs, and vice versa.     This paper considers password generators, i.e. systems designed to generate site-specific passwords on demand. Such systems are an alternative to password managers. Over the last 15 years a range of password generator systems have been described. This paper proposes the first general model for such systems, and critically examines options for instantiating this model; options considered include all those previously proposed as part of existing schemes as well as certain novel possibilities. The model enables a more objective and high-level assessment of the design of such systems; it has also been used to sketch a possible new scheme, AutoPass, intended to incorporate the best features of the prior art whilst also addressing many of the most serious shortcomings of existing systems through the inclusion of novel features.Comment: This is the full version of a paper with the same title due to be published in the proceedings of WISTP 2016 in September 201

    Posttraumatic stress disorder in mothers of individuals with Anorexia Nervosa.

    This pilot study aimed to investigate the prevalence of maternal posttraumatic stress (PTSD), anxiety and depressive symptoms and what aspects of having a child with anorexia nervosa (AN) are perceived as traumatic by the mothers. Thirty-one mothers of daughters with AN completed a range of self-report questionnaires and a structured clinical interview. Higher rates of anxiety, depression and PTSD symptoms were found in mothers than in the general UK population. Mothers reported acute traumatic stressors during the course of AN, such as 'thinking their daughter was about to die or dead', 'seeing or consenting to their daughter being tube-fed'. We also found that mothers rated chronic aspects of their daughter's AN as very severely distressing, such as 'worrying about permanent damage to daughter's health'. Results suggest that maternal mental health should be kept in mind during assessments of individuals with eating disorders and referral for a service in their own right might be indicated

    Exciton doublet in the Mott-Hubbard LiCuVO4_4 insulator identified by spectral ellipsometry

    Spectroscopic ellipsometry was used to study the dielectric function of LiCuVO4_{4}, a compound comprised of chains of edge-sharing CuO4_4 plaquettes, in the spectral range (0.75 - 6.5) eV at temperatures (7-300) K. For photon polarization along the chains, the data reveal a weak but well-resolved two-peak structure centered at 2.15 and 2.95 eV whose spectral weight is strongly enhanced upon cooling near the magnetic ordering temperature. We identify these features as an exciton doublet in the Mott-Hubbard gap that emerges as a consequence of the Coulomb interaction between electrons on nearest and next-nearest neighbor sites along the chains.     Icosahedral packing of polymer-tethered nanospheres and stabilization of the gyroid phase

    We present results of molecular simulations that predict the phases formed by the self-assembly of model nanospheres functionalized with a single polymer "tether", including double gyroid, perforated lamella and crystalline bilayer phases. We show that microphase separation of the immiscible tethers and nanospheres causes confinement of the nanoparticles, which promotes local icosahedral packing that stabilizes the gyroid and perforated lamella phases. We present a new metric for determining the local arrangement of particles based on spherical harmonic "fingerprints", which we use to quantify the extent of icosahedral ordering.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    Anomalous bond stretching phonons as a probe of charge fluctuations in perovskites

    Important information on momentum resolved low energy charge response can be extracted from anomalous properties of bond stretching in plane phonons observed in inelastic neutron and X-ray scattering in cuprates and some other perovskites. We discuss a semiphenomenological model based on coupling of phonons to a single charge mode. The phonon dispersion and linewidth allow to locate the energy of the charge excitation in the mid infrared part of the spectrum and to determine some of its characteristics. New experiments on oxygen isotope substitution could allow to achieve a more detailed description. Corresponding relations following from the model can be used for the interpretation of experiments and as test of the model.Comment: presented at the M2S-HTSC-VIII conference in Dresde

    spl(2,1) dynamical supersymmetry and suppression of ferromagnetism in flat band double-exchange models

    The low energy spectrum of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model on a N-site complete graph extended with on-site repulsion is obtained from the underlying spl(2,1) algebra properties in the strong coupling limit. The ferromagnetic ground state is realized for 1 and N+1 electrons only. We identify the large density of states to be responsible for the suppression of the ferromagnetic state and argue that a similar situation is encountered in the Kagome, pyrochlore, and other lattices with flat bands in their one-particle density of states.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur

    Numerical renormalization group study of the correlation functions of the antiferromagnetic spin-12\frac{1}{2} Heisenberg chain

    We use the density-matrix renormalization group technique developed by White \cite{white} to calculate the spin correlation functions =(1)lω(l,N)=(-1)^l \omega(l,N) for isotropic Heisenberg rings up to N=70N=70 sites. The correlation functions for large ll and NN are found to obey the scaling relation ω(l,N)=ω(l,)fXYα(l/N)\omega(l,N)=\omega(l,\infty)f_{XY}^{\alpha} (l/N) proposed by Kaplan et al. \cite{horsch} , which is used to determine ω(l,)\omega(l,\infty). The asymptotic correlation function ω(l,)\omega(l,\infty) and the magnetic structure factor S(q=π)S(q=\pi) show logarithmic corrections consistent with ω(l,)alncl/l\omega(l,\infty)\sim a\sqrt{\ln{cl}}/l, where cc is related to the cut-off dependent coupling constant geff(l0)=1/ln(cl0)g_{eff}(l_0)=1/\ln(cl_0), as predicted by field theoretical treatments.Comment: Accepted in Phys.
