Oxygen and nitrogen abundances of HII regions in six spiral galaxies
Spectroscopic observations of 63 HII regions in six spiral galaxies (NGC 628,
NGC 783, NGC 2336, NGC 6217, NGC 7331, and NGC 7678) were carried out with the
6-meter telescope (BTA) of Russian Special Astrophysical Observatory with the
Spectral Camera attached to the focal reducer SCORPIO in the multislit mode
with a dispersion of 2.1A/pixel and a spectral resolution of 10A. These
observations were used to estimate the oxygen and nitrogen abundances and the
electron temperatures in HII regions through the recent variant of the strong
line method (NS calibration). The parameters of the radial distribution (the
extrapolated central intercept value and the gradient) of the oxygen and
nitrogen abundances in the disks of spiral galaxies NGC 628, NGC 783, NGC 2336,
NGC 7331, and NGC 7678 have been determined. The abundances in the NGC 783, NGC
2336, NGC 6217, and NGC 7678 are measured for the first time. Galaxies from our
sample follow well the general trend in the luminosity - central metallicity

The Oxygen Abundance of Nearby Galaxies from Sloan Digital Sky Survey Spectra
We have derived the oxygen abundance for a sample of nearby galaxies in the
Data Release 5 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) which possess at least
two independent spectra of one or several HII regions with a detected
[OIII]4363 auroral line. Since, for nearby galaxies, the [OII]3727 nebular line
is out of the observed wavelength range, we propose a method to derive (O/H)_ff
abundances using the classic Te method coupled with the ff relation. (O/H)_7325
abundances have also been determined, based on the [OII]7320,7330 line
intensities, and using a small modification of the standard Te method. The
(O/H)_ff and (O/H)_7325 abundances have been derived with both the one- and
two-dimensional t_2 - t_3 relations. It was found that the (O/H)_ff abundances
derived with the parametric two-dimensional t_2 - t_3 relation are most
reliable. Oxygen abundances have been determined in 29 nearby galaxies, based
on 84 individual abundance determinations in HII regions. Because of our
selection methods, the metallicity of our galaxies lies in the narrow range 8.2
< 12 + log (O/H) < 8.4. The radial distribution of oxygen abundances in the
disk of the spiral galaxy NGC 4490 is determined for the first time.Comment: 39 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in the

On the oxygen abundance in our Galaxy
The compilation of published spectra of Galactic HII regions with available diagnostic [OIII]4363 line has been carried out. Our list contains 71 individual measurements of 13 HII regions in the range of galactocentric distances from 6.6 to 14.8 kpc. The oxygen abundances in all the HII regions were recomputed in the same way, using the classic Te - method. The oxygen abundance at the solar galactocentric distance traced by those HII regions is in agreement with the oxygen abundance in the interstellar medium in the solar vicinity derived with high precision from the interstellar absorption lines towards stars. The derived radial oxygen abundance distribution was compared with that for HII regions from the Shaver et al. (1983) sample which is the basis of many models for the chemical evolution of our Galaxy. It was found that the original Shaver et al.'s oxygen abundances are overestimated by 0.2-0.3 dex. Oxygen abundances in HII regions from the Shaver et al. sample have been redetermined with the recently suggested P - method. The radial distribution of oxygen abundances from the Shaver et al. sample redetermined with the P - method is in agreement with our radial distribution of (O/H)_Te abundances
Advancing Creative Visual Thinking with Constructive Function-based Modelling.
Modern education technologies are destined to reflect the realities of a modern digital age. The juxtaposition of real and synthetic (computer-generated) worlds as well as a greater emphasis on visual dimension are especially important characteristics that have to be taken into account in learning and teaching. We describe the ways in which an approach to constructive shape modelling can be used to advancing creative visual thinking in artistic and technical education. This approach assumes the use of a simple programming language or interactive software tools for creating a shape model, generating its images, and finally fabricating a real object of that model. It can be considered an educational technology suitable not only for children and students but also for researchers, artists, and designers. The corresponding modelling language and software tools are being developed within an international HyperFun Project. These tools are easy to use by students of different age, specialization and abilities, and can easily be extended and adapted for various educational purposes in different areas
Multisensory analytics for several interconnected scalar fields analysis
In our day it's hard to imagine modern research in sophisticated scientific area without use of visual analytics tools. However, humans are able to receive and analyze information about world around them not only through their eyes, but with help of other sensory stimuli as well and there is no reason why scientific data analyses should be an exception. As a result, there is a lot of research done recently in area of multimodal interfaces that are characterized by various sensory stimuli involvement and especially in visual-auditory interfaces development. In this work we introduce multisensory analytics approach, discuss theoretical issues, introduce main concepts of software tools implementing our approach, describe one of the possible auditory-visual mappings methods for particular case of scalar fields analyses - simultaneous interconnected scalar fields analyses and give practical examples
Validity of abundances derived from spaxel spectra of the MaNGA survey
We measured the emission lines in the spaxel spectra of MaNGA galaxies in
order to determine the abundance distributions therein. It has been suggested
that the strength of the low-ionization lines, R_2, N_2, and S_2 may be
increased (relative to Balmer lines) in (some) spaxel spectra of the MaNGA
survey due to a contribution of the radiation of the diffuse ionized gas.
Consequently, the abundances derived from the spaxel spectra through
strong-line methods may suffer from large errors. We examined this expectation
by comparing the behaviour of the line intensities and the abundances estimated
through different calibrations for slit spectra of HII regions in nearby
galaxies, for fibre spectra from the SDSS, and for spaxel spectra of the MaNGA
survey. We found that the S_2 strength is increased significantly in the fibre
and spaxel spectra. The mean enhancement changes with metallicity and can be as
large as a factor of 2. The mean distortion of R_2 and N_2 is less than a
factor of 1.3. This suggests that Kaufmann et al.'s demarcation line between
AGNs and HII regions in the BPT diagram is a useful criterion to reject spectra
with significantly distorted strengths of the N_2 and R_2 lines. We find that
the three-dimensional R calibration, which uses the N_2 and R_2 lines, produces
reliable abundances in the MaNGA galaxies. The one-dimensional N2 calibration
produces either reliable or wrong abundances depending on whether excitation
and N/O abundance ratio in the target region (spaxel) are close to or differ
from those parameters in the calibrating points located close to the
calibration relation. We then determined abundance distributions within the
optical radii in the discs of 47 MaNGA galaxies. The optical radii of the
galaxies were estimated from the surface brightness profiles constructed based

How Does Cross-Reactive Stimulation Affect the Longevity of CD8+ T Cell Memory?
Immunological memory—the ability to “remember” previously encountered pathogens and respond faster upon re-exposure is a central feature of the immune response in vertebrates. The cross-reactive stimulation hypothesis for the maintenance of memory proposes that memory cells specific for a given pathogen are maintained by cross-reactive stimulation following infections with other (unrelated) pathogens. We use mathematical models to examine the cross-reactive stimulation hypothesis. We find that: (i) the direct boosting of cross-reactive lineages only provides a very small increase in the average longevity of immunological memory; (ii) the expansion of cross-reactive lineages can indirectly increase the longevity of memory by reducing the magnitude of expansion of new naive lineages which occupy space in the memory compartment and are responsible for the decline in memory; (iii) cross-reactive stimulation results in variation in the rates of decline of different lineages of memory cells and enrichment of memory cell population for cells that are cross-reactive for the pathogens to which the individual has been exposed
