    Predatory potential of two functional groups of spiders on Philaenus spumarius

    There is an urgent need of increasing the knowledge about natural enemies of Philaenus spumarius and finding strategies to limit the spread of X. fastidiosa. Generalist predators, such as spiders, can arise as potential natural control agents. Determining the functional response is crucial for understanding the potentiality of a predator as biological control agent. In this work, the functional response of two widespread palearctic spider species belonging to two different functional groups was assessed. The ambusher spider Synema globosum and the orb-weaver Araniella cucurbitina were used as model species and P. spumarius as prey under laboratory conditions. In parallel, Ceratitis capitata was also used as prey in order to compare the spiders® predatory potential between a non-flying insect (P. spumarius) and a flying one (C. capitata). A. cucurbitina and S. globosum showed a type II and type I functional response respectively when fed with P. spumarius and a type II response when fed with C. capitata. Both the handling time and attack rate were significantly different between spider species when fed with P. spumarius (p<0.01) and between prey types for each spider functional group (p<0.01). The results suggest that S. globosum was more efficient capturing spittlebugs one by one than A. cucurbitina.     RNA interference is a powerful tool against corn rootworm. Adults and neonates of southern corn rootworm, Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi Barber (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), were exposed to the LC50 of vATPase-A and Snf7 double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs), and the effects on female fecundity, egg viability, male fitness as measured by sperm viability and mating capacity, larval recovery along with dry weight, and instar determination 10 d after exposure to dsRNA, were determined. Significant reductions were observed for a number of parameters in dsRNA-exposed rootworms relative to control treatments. Female fecundity and larval recovery were significantly reduced after exposure to both dsRNAs. In addition, larval dry weight and recovery of 2nd and 3rd instars along with dry weight for 3rd instars were significantly reduced after neonate exposure to vATPase-A dsRNA. Neither dsRNA affected male capacity to mate or sperm viability after exposure to the respective LC50s. After 10 d of feeding on untreated corn roots, neonates that survived exposure for 2 d to the vATPase-A dsRNA LC50 exhibited lower dry weight than the control. There was significant gene knockdown in adult males and females after exposure for 5 d to LC50 of vATPase-A and Snf7 dsRNAs. The parameters are discussed in terms of fitness and possible outcomes after deployment of corn hybrids expressing dsRNAs

    Drought projections for the NW Iberian Peninsula under climate change

    Drought can be considered an atmospheric condition, which rapidly goes beyond to affect multiple fields of the environment and human activities. The persistence of these atmospheric conditions can affect the recharge of surface and groundwater bodies due to a decrease in the volume of runoff and seepage, thus affecting human and environmental activities. In this context, the main aim of this work is to characterize the occurrence and variability of future droughts in Galicia over the twenty-first century. The methodology followed is based on the calculation and analysis of the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) in three-time scales (3, 6, and 12 months), using daily outputs of precipitation data from one RCM provided by the EURO-CORDEX project for different periods (reference from 1971 to 2005, and future from 2025 to 2060 and 2061 to 2096) and scenarios (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5). Using SPI-3, SPI-6, and SPI-12 projections, drought trends and potential changes in their characteristics were explored under RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 scenarios. In both scenarios, throughout the twenty-first century, a decreasing trend in SPI indicates an intensification of drought conditions over Galicia. Moreover, at the beginning of the century, under RCP 4.5, drought events will increase and will be slightly more intense but less persistent, while under RCP 8.5, the number of events will be almost the same, but shorter and less severe. Toward the end of the century, drought events are expected to be more numerous, less durable, and more intense under both scenarios.Xunta de Galicia | Ref.     Dietary Consumption of Polyphenols in University Students Relationship with Their Health-Related Habits

    Polyphenols are compounds derived from plants found in foods with potential health benefits due to their antioxidant properties. The aim of this study was to establish the consumption of polyphenols in university students and the relationship between the amount of polyphenols consumed and their health-related habits. For this, 270 university students answered a validated food consumption frequency questionnaire (FFQ), a physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ), and a health and lifestyle questionnaire. From the FFQ, the daily consumption of classes and subclasses of polyphenols was calculated. Then, the population was classified in terciles according to the polyphenol consumption, and the physical activity, smoking habits, and the prevalence of allergy and obesity in each tercile was established. The consumption of polyphenols was about 1.5 g/day, being flavonoids and phenolic acids the most consumed. The main sources of polyphenol consumption were cocoa, coffee, and to a lesser extent, fruits. There were no significant differences in consumption according to sex, BMI, health status, or physical activity. The smoking habit was related to a high consumption of polyphenols, mainly those that came from coffee and cocoa. Students who smoke had a higher consumption of polyphenols with respect to nonsmokers, especially those derived from coffee

    Relationship between Cocoa Intake and Healthy Status: A Pilot Study in University Students

    Due to its polyphenol content, cocoa's potential health effects are attracting much attention, showing, among other things, cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, and neuroprotective actions. However, there is very limited information regarding the effect of cocoa on human immunity. This study aimed to establish the relationship between cocoa consumption and health status, focusing on physical activity habits and allergy prevalence in young people. For this, a sample of 270 university students was recruited to complete a food frequency questionnaire, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), and a lifestyle and health status questionnaire. The results were analysed by classifying the participants into tertiles defined according to their cocoa consumption: low (LC), moderate (MC), and high (HC) consumers. The consumption of cocoa inversely correlated with physical activity and the MC group had significantly less chronic disease frequency than the LC group. The percentage of allergic people in the MC and HC groups was lower than that in the LC group and, moreover, the cocoa intake, especially moderate consumption, was also associated with a lower presence of allergic symptoms.     Protective effects of phenolic constituents from Cytisus multiflorus, Lamium album L. and Thymus citriodorus on liver cells

    The present study investigated the antioxidant and cytoprotective effects of purified ethanolic extracts of Cytisus multiflorus, Lamium album L. and Thymus citriodorus plants. These extracts showed high antioxidant activity in DPPH and reducing power assays. Using a model of chemical stress induced by potassium dichromate (DK) in human hepatoblastoma HepG2 cells, 50 ug/mL of C. multiflorus, L. album and T. citriodorus extracts decreased the rate of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by 35%, 26% and 20%, respectively, when exposed to 25 mu M of DK. This effect was also observed for the treatment of cells with individual polyphenolic compounds determined in the extracts, or with mixtures prepared with individual polyphenolic compounds simulating the phenolic composition of the extracts. Additionally, the purified ethanolic extracts and the prepared polyphenolic mixtures showed a cytoprotective effect against DK-induced toxicity.     Large differences in gene expression responses to drought and heat stress between elite barley cultivar scarlett and a spanish landrace

Improvement for drought tolerance could take advantage of the diversity held in germplasm collections, much of which has not been incorporated yet into modern breeding. Spanish landraces constitute a promising resource for barley breeding, as they were widely grown until last century and still show good yielding ability under stress. Here, we study the transcriptome expression landscape in two genotypes, an outstanding Spanish landrace-derived inbred line (SBCC073) and a modern cultivar (Scarlett). Gene expression of adult plants after prolonged stresses, either drought or drought combined with heat, was monitored. Transcriptome of mature leaves presented little changes under severe drought, whereas abundant gene expression changes were observed under combined mild drought and heat. Developing inflorescences of SBCC073 exhibited mostly unaltered gene expression, whereas numerous changes were found in the same tissues for Scarlett. Genotypic differences in physiological traits and gene expression patterns confirmed the different behavior of landrace SBCC073 and cultivar Scarlett under abiotic stress, suggesting that they responded to stress following different strategies. A comparison with related studies in barley, addressing gene expression responses to drought, revealed common biological processes, but moderate agreement regarding individual differentially expressed transcripts. Special emphasis was put in the search of co-expressed genes and underlying common regulatory motifs.     Crops on the edge of a cliff: Storage at Castro S. JoĂŁo das Arribas (Northwest Iberia) in the Late Antiquity

    The site of Castro S. João das Arribas is placed on the edge of a cliff over the Douro river (Miranda do Douro, Northeast of Portugal). Archaeological interventions in its highest area uncovered a main occupation from Late Antiquity. On its western part a functional space was recorded, which included two small above-ground structures and abundant charred carpological remains. These were found inside ceramic vessels and spread throughout the area, suggesting its destruction occurred after a fire event. A radiocarbon date places such episode in some moment between the late 6th and the first half of the 7th century CE. Carpological results revealed an assemblage dominated by cereal grains, mostly rye (Secale cereale). Naked wheat (Triticum aestivum/durum), barley (Hordeum vulgare), common millet (Panicum miliaceum) and foxtail millet (Setaria italica) were also found but in smaller amounts. The large amount of carpological remains in the above-mentioned contexts, suggests the space was used for storage, at least between the 6th and 7th centuries CE. Although some uncertainties remain regarding how crops were stored, evidence points that they were kept in ceramic vessels, outside and inside the small storage facilities, but also in other types of containers, eventually made of perishable materials. At Castro S. João das Arribas, past communities chose a diversity of crops, however, most of them show undemanding features in terms of soil and climatic conditions.
