Sugarcane stem borers of the Colombian Cauca River Valley: current pest status, biology, and control

Retrieved from ://WOS:000356451400049Sugarcane stem borers of the genus of Diatraea (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) form a species complex that causes serious economic losses to sugarcane production in the Cauca River Valley and other regions of Colombia. Two primary species, Diatraea saccharalis (F.) and D. indigenella Dyar and Heinrich, have been effectively managed for more than 4 decades through augmentative releases of the tachinid flies Lydella minense (Townsend) and Billaea claripalpis (Wulp) (Diptera: Tachinidae) and the egg parasitoid Trichogramma exiguum Pinto & Platner (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). Here we review the current pest status of Diatraea species, damage assessment protocols, management tactics, and the environmental factors and cultural practices that can affect biological control outcomes. Recent changes in the cultivars grown have the potential to increase pest populations and diminish biological control efficacy. Additionally, recent outbreaks of new Diatraea species may further increase overall pest pressure. Thus, there is a need to develop supplementary tactics for the management of these pests that will be compatible with biological control, as well as more reliable protocols for assessing host plant resistance against the increase in infestation intensity
Efficacy of a cry1Ab Gene for Control of Maruca vitrata (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) in Cowpea (Fabales: Fabaceae)
Cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L) Walp.] is an important staple legume in the diet of many households in
sub-Saharan Africa. Its production, however, is negatively impacted by many insect pests including bean pod
borer, Maruca vitrata F., which can cause 20–80% yield loss. Several genetically engineered cowpea events
that contain a cry1Ab gene from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) for resistance against M. vitrata were evaluated in
Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Ghana (West Africa), where cowpea is commonly grown. As part of the regulatory
safety package, these efficacy data were developed and evaluated by in-country scientists. The Bt-cowpea lines
were planted in confined field trials under Insect-proof netting and artificially infested with up to 500 M. vitrata
larvae per plant during bud formation and flowering periods. Bt-cowpea lines provided nearly complete pod
and seed protection and in most cases resulted in significantly increased seed yield over non-Bt control lines.
An integrated pest management strategy that includes use of Bt-cowpea augmented with minimal insecticide
treatment for protection against other insects is recommended to control pod borer to enhance cowpea
production. The insect resistance management plan is based on the high-dose refuge strategy where non-Btcowpea
and natural refuges are expected to provide M. vitrata susceptible to Cry1Ab protein. In addition, there
will be a limited release of this product until a two-toxin cowpea pyramid is released. Other than South African
genetically engineered crops, Bt-cowpea is the first genetically engineered food crop developed by the public
sector and approved for release in sub-Saharan Africa
Proteome from patients with metabolic syndrome is regulated by quantity and quality of dietary lipids
Background: Metabolic syndrome is a multi-component disorder associated to a high risk of cardiovascular disease.
Its etiology is the result of a complex interaction between genetic and environmental factors, including dietary
habits. We aimed to identify the target proteins modulated by the long-term consumption of four diets differing in
the quality and quantity of lipids in the whole proteome of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC).
Results: A randomized, controlled trial conducted within the LIPGENE study assigned 24 MetS patients for 12 weeks
each to 1 of 4 diets: a) high-saturated fatty acid (HSFA), b) high-monounsaturated fatty acid (HMUFA), c) low-fat,
high-complex carbohydrate diets supplemented with placebo (LFHCC) and d) low-fat, high-complex carbohydrate
diets supplemented with long chain (LC) n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) (LFHCC n-3). We analyzed the
changes induced in the proteome of both nuclear and cytoplasmic fractions of PBMC using 2-D proteomic analysis.
Sixty-seven proteins were differentially expressed after the long-term consumption of the four diets. The HSFA diet
induced the expression of proteins responding to oxidative stress, degradation of ubiquitinated proteins and DNA
repair. However, HMUFA, LFHCC and LFHCC n-3 diets down-regulated pro-inflammatory and oxidative stress-related
proteins and DNA repairing proteins.
Conclusion: The long-term consumption of HSFA, compared to HMUFA, LFHCC and LFHCC n-3, seems to increase the
cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome, such as inflammation and oxidative stress,
and seem lead to DNA damage as a consequence of high oxidative stress
Epithelial cancers in the post-genomic era: should we reconsider our lifestyle?
The age-related epithelial cancers of the breast, colorectum and prostate are the most prevalent and are increasing in our aging populations. Epithelial cells turnover rapidly and mutations naturally accumulate throughout life. Most epithelial cancers arise from this normal mutation rate. All elderly individuals will harbour many cells with the requisite mutations and most will develop occult neoplastic lesions. Although essential for initiation, these mutations are not sufficient for the progression of cancer to a life-threatening disease. This progression appears to be dependent on context: the tissue ecosystem within individuals and lifestyle exposures across populations of individuals. Together, this implies that the seeds may be plentiful but they only germinate in the right soil. The incidence of these cancers is much lower in Eastern countries but is increasing with Westernisation and increases more acutely in migrants to the West. A Western lifestyle is strongly associated with perturbed metabolism, as evidenced by the epidemics of obesity and diabetes: this may also provide the setting enabling the progression of epithelial cancers. Epidemiology has indicated that metabolic biomarkers are prospectively associated with cancer incidence and prognosis. Furthermore, within cancer research, there has been a rediscovery that a switch in cell metabolism is critical for cancer progression but this is set within the metabolic status of the host. The seed may only germinate if the soil is fertile. This perspective brings together the different avenues of investigation implicating the role that metabolism may play within the context of post-genomic concepts of cancer

Perceived Consequences of Herbicide-Tolerant and Insect-Resistant Crops on Integrated Pest Management Strategies in the Western United States : Results of an Online Survey
We conducted an online survey to assess the potential effects of herbicide-tolerant (HT) and insect-resistant (IR) crops on integrated pest management (IPM) practices in the Western United States For HT crops, participants perceived a decrease in several IPM practices, including crop and herbicide rotations and the combined use of multiple weed control strategies. The most serious potential consequences were considered to be a shift in weed species composition and development of herbicide-resistant weeds. For IR crops, respondents perceived a beneficial reduction in application of both broad-spectrum and selective insecticides. The most significant issues for IR crops were believed to be potential development of target pest resistance and difficulties with management of insect refuges. The survey results support the need for continued emphasis on comprehensive strategies in IPM education programs to prolong the usefulness of HT and IR crops.This paper received grant funding from USDA's Western Integrated Pest Management Center to support a work group on this topic
The Importance of Context for Multi-informant Assessment of Peer Victimization
Peer victimization has been assessed by using various methods, with little attention to methodological variance. Peer victimization assessments of 238 girls (M age = 9.77 years; 50% Black, 50% White) made by peers, teachers, and self in school, and peers and observers in afterschool playgroups, enabled examination of context and reporter effects on measurement. Results underscored the importance of context: (1) Victimization reported by informants in the same context (i.e., teachers and peers in school setting, and peers and observers in playgroup setting) correlated more strongly than with self-reported victimization. (2) Informant ratings of victimization made within similar contexts (school and afterschool playgroups) showed higher agreement than those made in different contexts (school vs. playgroups) even if the same reporter was used across both contexts (peer report in schools and peer report in playgroups). (3) Teacher-reported victimization was more strongly associated with objective academic outcomes than were peer-, self-, or observer-reported victimization, due to the shared academic context
