    Use of automatic refractometer infrared images to screen pigment dispersion syndrome: A cross-sectional observational study from a preliminary hypothesis

    Background: This study was performed to evaluate the use of anterior segment images, obtained with an automatic refractometer, to identify early defects of the iris pigment epithelium in patients with pigment dispersion syndrome (PDS) or pigmentary glaucoma (PG) without observable alterations at the slit lamp. Methods: In this cross-sectional observational study, carried out from January 2018 to December 2019, in Policlinico Citta di Udine Health Center, Udine, Italy, we observed anterior segment infrared images of 1700 subjects who were undergoing routine ophthalmological examination using an automatic refractometer. We selected infrared images of subjects who fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria and looked for a focal defect in the iris pigment epithelium. Results: Twenty patients with focal iris pigment epithelial defect were identified and none of them showed evident signs of PDS. After the necessary explanations, they agreed to have further examinations to verify the possibility of PDS. An in-depth evaluation of ocular structures, including gonioscopy, demonstrated the presence of PDS in all subjects with iris defects. Conclusions: The use of infrared images obtained by an automatic refractometer could provide early and easy identification of PDS in crowded ophthalmology clinics or mass screening programs; yet, more well-designed studies are necessary to confirm these preliminary findings and prove this proposed screening tool

    Could Physical Activity Have any Role in Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Prisoners? A Systematic Review.

    More than 10.74 million people are currently held in penal institutions worldwide. Moreover, there is also evidence that the percentage of elder and female prisoners has been consistently growing. Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide. Exercise training and physical activity help to prevent both primary and secondary cardiovascular events. Data on the influence of physical activity on the well-being in prison population is scarce. Here, we discussed, in a systematic review, the general health conditions and the cardiovascular risk profile in the prisoners compared to the general population and evaluated whether or not exercise could be a valuable tool in preventing these diseases in inmates. We performed a systematic review following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement: 769 were initially identified, and a total of 24 studies were finally included. Nine studies evaluated the health conditions in prisoners, five studies evaluated the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and coronary heart disease (CHD) in the prison population, and 10 studies evaluated the feasibility and the effectiveness of exercise programs in prisoners. Sports-educational programs can benefit prison inmates. It appears that supervised exercise training is an effective coping strategy to deal with incarceration. Moreover, it seems the sports programs might be a useful tool in improving physical and mental health of prisoners as well as in decreasing cardiovascular risk factors

    The paper analyses the recent case law on Article 19 of the Law no 300 of 20 May 1970 (the ‘Workers’ Statute’), with particular reference to the application of the cited provision to the Fiat case (i.e. in the litigation between Fiat and some unions about the right to constitute representation bodies in the workplace). After an introduction on the previous constitutional case law on Article 19, the paper deals with the different arguments used by the courts in providing different interpretations on Article 19, pointing out the paradoxical effect according to which the application of such provision to the Fiat case gives rise to doubts as to its constitutionality

    From Sustainability coercion to Social Engagement: The turning role of Corporate Social Responsibility

    As widely recognized, sustainability is a multi- and trans-disciplinary domain potentially able to influence actions, decisions, and behaviors at all the levels of socio-economic organizations. Reflecting upon the pervasive nature of sustainability domain, the paper proposes an overview about the evolutionary path of strategies and approaches for sustainability. Adopting a deductive approach, the main purpose of the paper is to underline in which ways the shifting from a coercive approach to a participatory approach in strategies for sustainability - made possible by the spread of Corporate Social Responsibility practices - has contributed to the emergence of sustainable innovation domain. The concept of Social Engagement in sustainability debate is proposed with the aim to underline that sustainable innovation is effectively possible only in the case in which all the levels of socio-economic organizations are engaged in the debate about sustainability and - as a consequence - they are effectively able to understand and promote the value of an innovation able to combine and satisfy society, economy, and environment needs

    Sex/Gender-Specific Imbalance in CVD: Could Physical Activity Help to Improve Clinical Outcome Targeting CVD Molecular Mechanisms in Women?

    In the last two decades, new insights have been gained regarding sex/gender-related differences in cardiovascular disease (CVD). CVD represents the leading cause of death worldwide in both men and women, accounting for at least one-third of all deaths in women and half of deaths in women over 50 years in developing countries. Important sex-related differences in prevalence, presentation, management, and outcomes of different CVDs have been recently discovered, demonstrating sex/gender-specific pathophysiologic features in the presentation and prognosis of CVD in men and women. A large amount of evidence has highlighted the role of sex hormones in protecting women from CVDs, providing an advantage over men that is lost when women reach the menopause stage. This hormonal-dependent shift of sex-related CVD risk consequently affects the overall CVD epidemiology, particularly in light of the increasing trend of population aging. The benefits of physical activity have been recognized for a long time as a powerful preventive approach for both CVD prevention and aging-related morbidity control. Exercise training is indeed a potent physiological stimulus, which reduces primary and secondary cardiovascular events. However, the underlying mechanisms of these positive effects, including from a sex/gender perspective, still need to be fully elucidated. The aim of this work is to provide a review of the evidence linking sex/gender-related differences in CVD, including sex/gender-specific molecular mediators, to explore whether sex- and gender-tailored physical activity may be used as an effective tool to prevent CVD and improve clinical outcomes in women

    The Evolution of Diagnostic Techniques in the Paleopathology of Tuberculosis: A Scoping Review

    Tuberculosis (TB) is an ancient chronic infectious disease that remains a global health concern. In human remains, the most common and characteristic clinical signs are the skeletal modifications involving the spine, such as in Pott’s disease. Diagnosing TB in ancient human remains is challenging. Therefore, in this systematic review, the authors investigated the studies assessing molecular diagnosis of Pott’s disease in ancient human remains with the intention to survey the literature, map the evidence, and identify gaps and future perspectives on TB in paleopathology. Our systematic review offers a full contextualization of the history of Pott’s disease in ancient times. Our search strategy was performed between August 2022 and March 2023. The authors initially identified 340 records, and 74 studies were finally included and assessed for qualitative analysis. Due to non-specific clinical signs associated with TB, how best to diagnose tuberculosis in human remains still represents a central point. Nevertheless, ancient DNA (aDNA) analysis, lipid biomarkers, and spoligotyping might be extremely useful tools in the study of TB in human remains. Moreover, we propose the extraction and study of immune response genes involved in innate and adaptive immunity versus Mycobacterium spp. as an innovative and vastly overlooked approach in TB paleopathology. Complementary methodologies should be integrated to provide the best approach to the study of TB in human remains

    En la actualidad, existen pocos herbicidas registrados para ser aplicados al cultivo de arveja (SENASA, 2022). En total, hay 15 principios activos que tienen registro para ser usados como desecantes, posemergentes y/o preemergentes. Sin embargo, solo unos pocos están registrados para ser usado en preemergencia del cultivo. Por lo tanto, es necesario generar información local para contar con más alternativas de herbicidas residuales en dicho cultivo.
