Central precocious puberty and gonadotropin releasing hormone agonist treatment

In order to understand the processes occurring during precocious puberty, one needs to specify what is currently known about normal pubertal development. Puberty can be defined as a maturational process of the hypothalamic-pituitarygonadal axis, which results in the development of the gonads and, concomitantly, in the physical and physiological processes which constitute adulthood and the capacity to reproduce. The regulation of puberty is a very complex process, involving the hormonal interaction of the cells in the hypothalamus, pituitary and gonads. A central role in this process is played by the Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH or LHRH: Luteinizing Hormone Releasing Hormone) which is produced and secreted by the hypothalamus

Collecting a corpus of Dutch SMS

In this paper we present the first freely available corpus of Dutch text messages containing data originating from the Netherlands and Flanders. This corpus has been collected in the framework of the SoNaR project and constitutes a viable part of this 500-million-word corpus. About 53,000 text messages were collected on a large scale, based on voluntary donations. These messages will be distributed as such. In this paper we focus on the data collection processes involved and after studying the effect of media coverage we show that especially free publicity in newspapers and on social media networks results in more contributions. All SMS are provided with metadata information. Looking at the composition of the corpus, it becomes visible that a small number of people have contributed a large amount of data, in total 272 people have contributed to the corpus during three months. The number of women contributing to the corpus is larger than the number of men, but male contributors submitted larger amounts of data. This corpus will be of paramount importance for sociolinguistic research and normalisation studies

Balancing SoNaR: IPR versus Processing Issues in a 500-Million-Word Written Dutch Reference Corpus

In The Low Countries, a major reference corpus for written Dutch is beingbuilt. We discuss the interplay between data acquisition and data processingduring the creation of the SoNaR Corpus. Based on developments in traditionalcorpus compiling and new web harvesting approaches, SoNaR is designed tocontain 500 million words, balanced over 36 text types including bothtraditional and new media texts. Beside its balanced design, every text sampleincluded in SoNaR will have its IPR issues settled to the largest extentpossible. This data collection task presents many challenges because everydecision taken on the level of text acquisition has ramifications for the levelof processing and the general usability of the corpus. As far as thetraditional text types are concerned, each text brings its own processingrequirements and issues. For new media texts - SMS, chat - the problem is evenmore complex, issues such as anonimity, recognizability and citation right, allpresent problems that have to be tackled. The solutions actually lead to thecreation of two corpora: a gigaword SoNaR, IPR-cleared for research purposes,and the smaller - of commissioned size - more privacy compliant SoNaR,IPR-cleared for commercial purposes as well

Voorbij God en mens, De zin van de wereld volgens het denken van Jean-Luc Nancy

In deze afstudeerscriptie staat de thematiek van zin en zingeving in de moderniteit centraal. Vanuit een filosofische invalshoek wordt het begrip zingeving daarbij als problematisch voorondersteld. Zo is het een term die zou kunnen suggereren dat er ‘eigenlijk’ geen zin is, maar dat de mens om de één of andere beweegreden aan dingen zin kan verlenen. Ook lijkt het begrip zingeving een activistisch mensbeeld te veronderstellen dat op autonome wijze de wereld om zich heen zou kunnen scheppen. Aan de hand van het werk van de Franse filosoof Jean-Luc Nancy (1940) is dit dominante mensbeeld vanuit waar de mens zelf de werkelijkheid waarin het functioneert zou dragen en vormgeven, kritisch onderzocht. De volgende tweeledige vraagstelling fungeerde hierbij als leidraad: hoe kunnen we aan de hand van het denken van Nancy het fenomeen zingeving begrijpen als we met hem stellen dat de zin niet langer afhankelijk is van een gever? En hoe kan de derde weg die hij op dit punt schetst, namelijk die tussen een religieuze en een humanistische zingeving, beoordeeld worden? Voor het beantwoorden van deze vraag heb ik de boeken The Sense of the World (Nancy, 1997) en Being Singular Plural (Nancy, 2000) grondig bestudeerd. Nancy stelt een heideggeriaans geïnspireerde benadering van zin voor waarbij de nadruk ligt op het altijd al gegeven zijn van zin. Die zin behoort aan een wereld zonder externe grond of fundament toe. Dat heeft tot gevolg dat de wereld de zin slechts in zichzelf kan vinden en op niets daarbuiten kan steunen. De mens wordt gezien als een Dasein dat in deze wereld en daarmee in de zin is opgenomen. Hieruit volgt de these dat wij zin zijn in plaats van hebben. Vervolgens is deze these uitgewerkt aan de hand van Nancy’s sociale ontologie. Hier is concreter ingegaan op de vraag hoe het Dasein existeert en welke gevolgen dit heeft voor het denken over zin. Daaruit komt naar voren dat het Dasein alleen als meervoudigheid, dat wil zeggen als ‘wij’ gedacht kan worden. De vraag naar zin blijkt hiermee wezenlijk verbonden te zijn met de vraag naar de gemeenschap. In het laatste hoofdstuk van deze scriptie zijn de gevolgen van het denken van Nancy voor de humanistiek en voor het denken over gemeenschap kritisch geanalyseerd. Ten eerste is Nancy’s visie op zin vergeleken met het zingevingsbegrip zoals dat binnen het humanisme en de humanistiek gehanteerd wordt. Door het onderzoeken van de raakvlakken met centrale noties zoals autonomie, levenskunst en horizontale transcendentie is tevens de relevantie van Nancy’s filosofie voor de humanistiek onderzocht. Vervolgens is de vraag beantwoord wat de betekenis van Nancy’s sociale ontologie kan zijn voor het denken over gemeenschap. Met zijn actuele gemeenschapsfilosofie neemt Nancy ook in dit debat een originele positie in. Zowel in het denken over zin als in de reflectie over de huidige maatschappij verwerpt Nancy het idee dat de individuele mens als fundament kan dienen voor het denken en handelen. Met deze derde weg die Nancy voorstelt, zijn er in de conclusie nieuwe betekenissen van zin gevormd. In die betekenissen van zin is de mens uit zijn eigen centrum weggehaald en deze worden daarom gedecentreerde of gedehumaniseerde vormen van zin genoemd. Begrippen als wereld, eindigheid, gebeurtenis en gift zijn voorbeelden van dergelijke nieuwe zinsbetekenissen en gaan voorbij aan een goddelijk of menselijk idee van zin en zingeving. In mijn ogen impliceert dit denken een onoverbrugbaar verschil met een humanistische visie op zingeving. Wel pleit ik ervoor dat de humanistiek het filosofische begrip dat Nancy van zin hanteert, meeneemt in haar denken over zingeving en verder onderzoekt. Op die manier krijgt het begrip zingeving meerdere betekenissen die naast elkaar kunnen bestaan. Niet alleen de vraag naar datgene wat het menselijk leven betekenis en richting kan geven staat dan centraal, maar ook de vraag naar de in zichzelf besloten zin krijgt op die manier een plaats binnen de humanistiek

The CLARIN Knowledge Centre for Atypical Communication Expertise

In this chapter we introduce the CLARIN Knowledge Centre for Atypical Communication Expertise. The mission of ACE is to support researchers engaged in languages which pose particular challenges for analysis; for this, we use the umbrella term “atypical communication”. This includes language use by second-language learners, people with language disorders or those suffering from lan-guage disabilities, and languages that pose unique challenges for analysis, such as sign languages and languages spoken in a multilingual context. The chapter presents details about the collaborations and outreach of the centre, the services offered, and a number of showcases for its activities
