    Observation of a short-lived pattern in the solar chromosphere

    In this work we investigate the dynamic behavior of inter-network regions of the solar chromosphere. We observed the chromosphere of the quiet Sun using a narrow-band Lyot filter centered at the Ca II K 2v emission peak with a bandpass of 0.3A. We achieved a spatial resolution of on average 0.7" at a cadence of 10s. In the inter-network we find a mesh-like pattern that features bright grains at the vertices. The pattern has a typical spatial scale of 1.95" and a mean evolution time scale of 53s with a standard deviation of 10s. A comparison of our results with a recent three-dimensional radiation hydrodynamical model implies that the observed pattern is of chromospheric origin. The measured time scales are not compatible with those of reversed granulation in the photosphere although the appearance is similar. A direct comparison between network and inter-network structure shows that their typical time scales differ by at least a factor of two. The existence of a rapidly evolving small-scale pattern in the inter-network regions supports the picture of the lower chromosphere as a highly dynamical and intermittent phenomenon.Comment: Letter A&A 4 pages 5 figure

    A geometric constraint over k-dimensional objects and shapes subject to business rules

    This report presents a global constraint that enforces rules written in a language based on arithmetic and first-order logic to hold among a set of objects. In a first step, the rules are rewritten to Quantifier-Free Presburger Arithmetic (QFPA) formulas. Secondly, such formulas are compiled to generators of k-dimensional forbidden sets. Such generators are a generalization of the indexicals of cc(FD). Finally, the forbidden sets generated by such indexicals are aggregated by a sweep-based algorithm and used for filtering. The business rules allow to express a great variety of packing and placement constraints, while admitting efficient and effective filtering of the domain variables of the k-dimensional object, without the need to use spatial data structures. The constraint was used to directly encode the packing knowledge of a major car manufacturer and tested on a set of real packing problems under these rules, as well as on a packing-unpacking problem

    Designing a future food vision for the Nordics through a participatory modeling approach

    International audienceAbstractThe development of future food systems will depend on normative decisions taken at different levels by policymakers and stakeholders. Scenario modeling is an adequate tool for assessing the implications of such decisions, but for an enlightened debate, it is important to make explicit and transparent how such value-based decisions affect modeling results. In a participatory approach working with five NGOs, we developed a future food vision for the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden) through an iterative process of defining the scenario, modeling, and revising the scenario, until a final future food vision was reached. The impacts on food production, land use, and greenhouse gas emissions, and the resulting diets in the food vision, were modeled using a mass flow model of the food system. The food vision formulated was an organic farming system where food is produced locally and livestock production is limited to “leftover streams,” i.e., by-products from food production and forage from pastures and perennial grass/clover mixtures, thus limiting food-feed competition. Consumption of meat, especially non-ruminant meat, was substantially reduced compared with current consumption in the Nordic countries (− 81%). An estimated population of 37 million people could be supplied with the scenario diet, which uses 0.21 ha of arable land and causes greenhouse gas emissions of 0.48 tCO2e per diet and year. The novelty of this paper includes advancing modeling of sustainable food systems by using an iterative process for designing future food visions based on stakeholder values, which enables results from multidisciplinary modeling (including agronomy, environmental system analysis, animal and human nutrition) to be fed back into the decision-making process, providing an empirical basis for normative decisions and a science-based future vision of sustainable food systems

    Acoustic-gravity wave propagation characteristics in 3D radiation hydrodynamic simulations of the solar atmosphere

    There has been tremendous progress in the degree of realism of three-dimensional radiation magneto-hydrodynamic simulations of the solar atmosphere in the past decades. Four of the most frequently used numerical codes are Bifrost, CO5BOLD, MANCHA3D, and MURaM. Here we test and compare the wave propagation characteristics in model runs from these four codes by measuring the dispersion relation of acoustic-gravity waves at various heights. We find considerable differences between the various models. The height dependence of wave power, in particular of high-frequency waves, varies by up to two orders of magnitude between the models, and the phase difference spectra of several models show unexpected features, including ±180\pm180^\circ phase jumps.Comment: 19 pages, 15 figure
