Entrepreneurial intentions among students: towards a re-focused research agenda
Purpose â This paper aims to address the need for a re-focused research agenda in relation to graduate entrepreneurship. An important theme for some years has been the effort to monitor attitudes and intentions of students towards starting up their own businesses. It is timely, however, to raise some questions about both the impact of this research and likewise the general approach it has taken in understanding the phenomenon of graduate entrepreneurship. Design/methodology/approach â The paper draws on a large data set (over 8,000 students) from one UK region. Specifically, it presents data from the 2007/2008 Entrepreneurial Intentions (EI) survey within the Yorkshire and Humberside region and reflects back over previous iterations of this research. Findings â The paper identifies three key outcomes. First, it establishes that across all years of the survey a substantial minority of students consistently hold relatively strong start-up intentions. Second, the paper highlights that, despite considerable efforts to increase the numbers moving to start-up, little impact is discernible. Third, the paper suggests that, although the EI survey is useful as a stock-taking exercise, it fails to address critical questions around the impact of higher education on entrepreneurship and the transition from entrepreneurial intent to the act of venture creation. Originality/value â The paper provides an important positioning perspective on the relationship between higher education and graduate entrepreneurship. While highlighting the importance of the EI research, the paper establishes the need for a re-focused research agenda; one that is conceptually robust and with a focus on the student journey from higher education to graduate entrepreneur
Ground and excited states Gamow-Teller strength distributions of iron isotopes and associated capture rates for core-collapse simulations
This paper reports on the microscopic calculation of ground and excited
states Gamow-Teller (GT) strength distributions, both in the electron capture
and electron decay direction, for Fe. The associated electron and
positron capture rates for these isotopes of iron are also calculated in
stellar matter. These calculations were recently introduced and this paper is a
follow-up which discusses in detail the GT strength distributions and stellar
capture rates of key iron isotopes. The calculations are performed within the
framework of the proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation
(pn-QRPA) theory. The pn-QRPA theory allows a microscopic
\textit{state-by-state} calculation of GT strength functions and stellar
capture rates which greatly increases the reliability of the results. For the
first time experimental deformation of nuclei are taken into account. In the
core of massive stars isotopes of iron, Fe, are considered to be
key players in decreasing the electron-to-baryon ratio () mainly via
electron capture on these nuclide. The structure of the presupernova star is
altered both by the changes in and the entropy of the core material.
Results are encouraging and are compared against measurements (where possible)
and other calculations. The calculated electron capture rates are in overall
good agreement with the shell model results. During the presupernova evolution
of massive stars, from oxygen shell burning stages till around end of
convective core silicon burning, the calculated electron capture rates on
Fe are around three times bigger than the corresponding shell model
rates. The calculated positron capture rates, however, are suppressed by two to
five orders of magnitude.Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, 10 table
rp-Process weak-interaction mediated rates of waiting-point nuclei
Electron capture and positron decay rates are calculated for
neutron-deficient Kr and Sr waiting point nuclei in stellar matter. The
calculation is performed within the framework of pn-QRPA model for rp-process
conditions. Fine tuning of particle-particle, particle-hole interaction
parameters and a proper choice of the deformation parameter resulted in an
accurate reproduction of the measured half-lives. The same model parameters
were used to calculate stellar rates. Inclusion of measured Gamow-Teller
strength distributions finally led to a reliable calculation of weak rates that
reproduced the measured half-lives well under limiting conditions. For the
rp-process conditions, electron capture and positron decay rates on Kr
and Sr are of comparable magnitude whereas electron capture rates on
Sr and Kr are 1--2 orders of magnitude bigger than the
corresponding positron decay rates. The pn-QRPA calculated electron capture
rates on Kr are bigger than previously calculated. The present
calculation strongly suggests that, under rp-process conditions, electron
capture rates form an integral part of weak-interaction mediated rates and
should not be neglected in nuclear reaction network calculations as done
previously.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, 4 tables; Astrophysics and Space Science (2012
-decay of key titanium isotopes in stellar environment
Amongst iron regime nuclei, -decay rates on titanium isotopes are
considered to be important during the late phases of evolution of massive
stars. The key -decay isotopes during presupernova evolution were
searched from available literature and a microscopic calculation of the decay
rates were performed using the proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase
approximation (pn-QRPA) theory. As per earlier simulation results electron
capture and -decay on certain isotopes of titanium are considered to be
important for the presupernova evolution of massive stars. Earlier the stellar
electron capture rates and neutrino energy loss rates due to relevant titanium
isotopes were presented. In this paper we finally present the -decay
rates of key titanium isotopes in stellar environment. The results are also
compared against previous calculations. The pn-QRPA -decay rates are
bigger at high stellar temperatures and smaller at high stellar densities
compared to the large scale shell model results. This study can prove useful
for the core-collapse simulators.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure
METHODOLOGY OF E-LEARNING INCULCATION
In the article is called the gap reasons between potential and real elearning possibilities and it is indicate on the need to develop a methodology of its inculcation; is considered elements bundles of a system subsystems which are confirmed the some elementary structural junction of the three definite elements that universal logical functional dependence characterize which is called as âtriadsâ. Structural model of these junctions is represented as a conventional isosceles triangle in the vertex of which is located the element, in essence balancing the internal contradictions of the other two; is shown the contradiction softening ways; the substantial components of the methodology of e-learning inculcation in the Republic of Kazakhstan are represented as a scheme and is given a brief description of the components shown in the scheme
In-vitro application of pentoxifylline preserved ultrastructure of spermatozoa after vitrification in asthenozoospermic patients
Abstract
PURPOSE:
To evaluate the effect of in vitro application of pentoxifylline (PX) on sperm parameters and ultrastructure after vitrification in asthenozoospermic patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:
A total of 30 asthenozoospermic semen samples (aged 25-45 years) were divided into four groups before vitrification, after vitrification, control (without PX) and experimental (with PX). In experimental group, each sample was exposed for 30 min to 3.6mmol/l PX and the control group without any treatment apposing in 370C for 30 min. After incubation, the samples were washed and analyzed again. Vitrification was done according to straw method. Eosin-nigrosin and Papanicolaou staining were applied for assessment of sperm viability and morphology, respectively. The samples without PX and post treatment with PX were assessed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
RESULTS:
A significant decrease in sperm motility (P †.001), morphology (11.47 ± 2.9 versus 6.73 ± 2.01) and viability (73.37 ± 6.26 versus 54.67 ± 6.73) was observed post vitrification, but sperm motility (19.85 ± 4.75 versus 32.07 ± 5.58, P †.001) was increased significantly following application of PX. This drug had no significant (P >.05) detrimental neither negative effect on ultrastructure acrosome, plasma membrane and coiled tail statues of spermatozoa.
CONCLUSION:
Vitrification had detrimental effects on sperm parameters, but PX reversed detrimental effects on sperm motility. However, PX had no alteration on ultrastructure morphology of human spermatozoa after vitrification
ASSESSMENT OF TEMPORAL FLOW VARIABILITY OF THE KABUL RIVER
Water resources estimation under changing flow regimes is required for planning and smooth distribution of water to provinces. Since the hydrological parameters are changing significantly due to climate change, the changes in the pattern of flow regimes are definite. The objective of present study was to assess the spatial and temporal hydro variability of Indus basin. The data of Kabul river at Nowshera before its confluence with Indus river were collected from Surface water Hydrology Project (SWHP), WAPDA. The seasons were divided as three and six month keeping in view the hydrological cycle. Trends and variation were investigated by applying the Mann-Kendall test and Senâs method. The presence of trends tested at different significant level, 99.9%, 95% and 90%. The overall analysis indicates that there is more flow variation on seasonal basis as compared to the annual basis. The Kabul river showed decreasing trend in the maximum mean annual discharge, whereas the minimum mean annual discharge showed increasing trend. It was concluded that Kabul river showed decreasing trend in annual mean and maximum discharge, whereas annual minimum discharge showed increasing trend. It was also noticed that Kabul river mean minimum discharge time series decreased during 1961-1985, whereas it increased during 1986-2010. It was also found that annual mean and maximum discharge decreasing rate was greater during 1986-2010. It was further concluded that each decade experienced one or two years of both dry and wet periods and that 2000-2004 was the driest period in the history of Kabul River
Simulation of a Cold Gas Thruster System and Test Data Correlation
During developmental testing of the Ascent Abort 1 (AA-1) cold gas thruster system, unexpected behavior was detected. Upon further review the design as it existed may not have met the requirements. To determine the best approach for modifying the design, the system was modeled with a dynamic fluid analysis tool (EASY5). The system model consisted of the nitrogen storage tank, pressure regulator, thruster valve, nozzle, and the associated interconnecting line lengths. The regulator and thruster valves were modeled using a combination of the fluid and mechanical modules available in EASY5. The simulation results were then compared against actual system test data. The simulation results exhibited behaviors similar to the test results, such as the pressure regulators response to thruster firings. Potential design solutions were investigated using the analytical model parameters, including increasing the volume downstream of the regulator and increasing the orifice area. Both were shown to improve the regulator response
