USAXS and x-ray microscopy investigation on silica and precursors of zeolites
Combination of SAXS and USAXS measurements provide an extended q-range (0.006-3.0/nm) to study fractal growth of both aging silica gel as well as precursors of zeolite-A. Mass (silica) and surface (zeolite) fractals are obsd. Scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) proves to be an extremely useful technique to obtain direct images of wet samples in the 0.1-100 m range, confirming the SAXS/USAXS results on even larger length scale
Stability conditions and positivity of invariants of fibrations
We study three methods that prove the positivity of a natural numerical
invariant associated to parameter families of polarized varieties. All
these methods involve different stability conditions. In dimension 2 we prove
that there is a natural connection between them, related to a yet another
stability condition, the linear stability. Finally we make some speculations

Phoretic Motion of Spheroidal Particles Due To Self-Generated Solute Gradients
We study theoretically the phoretic motion of a spheroidal particle, which
generates solute gradients in the surrounding unbounded solvent via chemical
reactions active on its surface in a cap-like region centered at one of the
poles of the particle. We derive, within the constraints of the mapping to
classical diffusio-phoresis, an analytical expression for the phoretic velocity
of such an object. This allows us to analyze in detail the dependence of the
velocity on the aspect ratio of the polar and the equatorial diameters of the
particle and on the fraction of the particle surface contributing to the
chemical reaction. The particular cases of a sphere and of an approximation for
a needle-like particle, which are the most common shapes employed in
experimental realizations of such self-propelled objects, are obtained from the
general solution in the limits that the aspect ratio approaches one or becomes

Massless Localized Vector Field on a Wall in D=5 SQED with Tensor Multiplets
Massless localized vector field is obtained in five-dimensional
supersymmetric (SUSY) QED coupled to tensor multiplets as a half BPS solution.
The four-dimensional gauge coupling is obtained as a topological charge. We
also find all the (bosonic) massive modes exactly for a particular value of a
parameter, demonstrating explicitly the existence of a mass gap. The

Holographic dual of the Standard Model on the throat
We apply recent techniques to construct geometries, based on local Calabi-Yau
manifolds, leading to warped throats with 3-form fluxes in string theory, with
interesting structure at their bottom. We provide their holographic dual
description in terms of RG flows for gauge theories with almost conformal
duality cascades and infrared confinement. We describe a model of a throat with
D-branes at its bottom, realizing a 3-family Standard Model like chiral sector.
We provide the explicit holographic dual gauge theory RG flow, and describe the
appearance of the SM degrees of freedom after confinement. As a second
application, we describe throats within throats, namely warped throats with
discontinuous warp factor in different regions of the radial coordinate, and

Finite Hilbert stability of (bi)canonical curves
We prove that a generic canonically or bicanonically embedded smooth curve
has semistable m-th Hilbert points for all m. We also prove that a generic
bicanonically embedded smooth curve has stable m-th Hilbert points for all m
\geq 3. In the canonical case, this is accomplished by proving finite Hilbert
semistability of special singular curves with G_m-action, namely the
canonically embedded balanced ribbon and the canonically embedded balanced
double A_{2k+1}-curve. In the bicanonical case, we prove finite Hilbert
stability of special hyperelliptic curves, namely Wiman curves. Finally, we
give examples of canonically embedded smooth curves whose m-th Hilbert points
are non-semistable for low values of m, but become semistable past a definite
threshold.

Flux Compactifications on Calabi-Yau Threefolds
The presence of RR and NS three-form fluxes in type IIB string
compactification on a Calabi-Yau orientifold gives rise to a nontrivial
superpotential W for the dilaton and complex structure moduli. This
superpotential is computable in terms of the period integrals of the Calabi-Yau
manifold. In this paper, we present explicit examples of both supersymmetric
and nonsupersymmetric solutions to the resulting 4d N=1 supersymmetric no-scale
supergravity, including some nonsupersymmetric solutions with relatively small
values of W. Our examples arise on orientifolds of the hypersurfaces in
and . They serve as explicit
illustrations of several of the ingredients which have played a role in the

Particle density fluctuations
Event-by-event fluctuations in the multiplicities of charged particles and
photons at SPS energies are discussed. Fluctuations are studied by controlling
the centrality of the reaction and rapidity acceptance of the detectors.
Results are also presented on the event-by-event study of correlations between
the multiplicity of charged particles and photons to search for DCC-like

Suppression of High-p_T Neutral Pion Production in Central Pb+Pb Collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 17.3 GeV Relative to p+C and p+Pb Collisions
Neutral pion transverse momentum spectra were measured in p+C and p+Pb
collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 17.4 GeV at mid-rapidity 2.3 < eta_lab < 3.0 over
the range 0.7< p_T < 3.5 GeV/c. The spectra are compared to pi0 spectra
measured in Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 17.3 GeV in the same experiment.
For a wide range of Pb+Pb centralities (N_part < 300) the yield of pi0's with
p_T > 2 GeV/c is larger than or consistent with the p+C or p+Pb yields scaled
with the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions (N_coll), while for central Pb+Pb
collisions with N_part > 350 the pi0 yield is suppressed.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Search for DCC in 158A GeV Pb+Pb Collisions
A detailed analysis of the phase space distributions of charged particles and
photons have been carried out using two independent methods. The results
indicate the presence of nonstatistical fluctuations in localized regions of
