    Neural Connectivity with Hidden Gaussian Graphical State-Model

    The noninvasive procedures for neural connectivity are under questioning. Theoretical models sustain that the electromagnetic field registered at external sensors is elicited by currents at neural space. Nevertheless, what we observe at the sensor space is a superposition of projected fields, from the whole gray-matter. This is the reason for a major pitfall of noninvasive Electrophysiology methods: distorted reconstruction of neural activity and its connectivity or leakage. It has been proven that current methods produce incorrect connectomes. Somewhat related to the incorrect connectivity modelling, they disregard either Systems Theory and Bayesian Information Theory. We introduce a new formalism that attains for it, Hidden Gaussian Graphical State-Model (HIGGS). A neural Gaussian Graphical Model (GGM) hidden by the observation equation of Magneto-encephalographic (MEEG) signals. HIGGS is equivalent to a frequency domain Linear State Space Model (LSSM) but with sparse connectivity prior. The mathematical contribution here is the theory for high-dimensional and frequency-domain HIGGS solvers. We demonstrate that HIGGS can attenuate the leakage effect in the most critical case: the distortion EEG signal due to head volume conduction heterogeneities. Its application in EEG is illustrated with retrieved connectivity patterns from human Steady State Visual Evoked Potentials (SSVEP). We provide for the first time confirmatory evidence for noninvasive procedures of neural connectivity: concurrent EEG and Electrocorticography (ECoG) recordings on monkey. Open source packages are freely available online, to reproduce the results presented in this paper and to analyze external MEEG databases

    Examina o espaço conquistado pela televisão nos suplementos culturais dos jornais. A análise foi feita a partir de dezenove edições do Caderno B, do Jornal do Brasil, um dos primeiros cadernos de cultura brasileiros. Foram selecionadas dez edições dos anos 1960, quando a audiência televisiva ainda se formava, e nove – a edição de 2009 estava indisponível – da década de 2000. A TV foi implantada de forma pioneira no país em 1950 e, após passar por processo de modernização e popularização, nas décadas de 1960 e 1970, vê sua audiência crescer, atrai um número cada vez maior de verbas publicitárias e ocupa seu espaço como grande veículo de massa brasileiro. Apesar dos altos índices alcançados no Ibope, qual o espaço que a televisão realmente passou a ocupar nos cadernos culturais?     Photoresponse of KNbO3–AFeO3 (A = Bi3+ or La3+) ceramics and its relationship with bandgap narrowing

    The crystal structure of (1-x)KNbO3–xBiFeO3 (KNBF) and (1-x)KNbO3-LaFeO3 (KNLF) (where x=0.00; 0.01; 0.02; 0.04; 0.08; 0.16; 0.32) was evaluated by XRD and Raman spectroscopy. XRD data show the crystal symmetry to evolve from orthorhombic to tetragonal with increasing x. The optical bandgap was found to narrow systematically with increasing x. Raman spectroscopy analysis corroborated long-range polar order in all compositions. The photoresponse of x=0.32 shows a typical diode–like behaviour, with current and voltage of 0.115 µA and 0.075 V for KNBF and 0.19 µA and 0.035 V for KNLF, respectively. To our knowledge these represent the largest values among KNbO3–based ceramics, making them promising for photovoltaic applications

    DNA Oxidation Photoinduced by Norharmane Rhenium(I) Polypyridyl Complexes: Effect of the Bidentate N,N′-Ligands on the Damage Profile

    ReI-polypyridyl complexes have interesting and distinctive photochemical and photosensitizing properties. This work describes the capability to induce (or photoinduce) DNA damage of three ReI-complexes with a naturally occurring alkaloid called norharmane (nHo) as ligand: [Re(CO)3(nHo)(L)]CF3SO3 where L=2,2′-bipyridine (ReBpy), phenanthroline (RePhen) or dipyrido[3,2-a:2′,3′-c]phenazine (ReDppz). The interaction of the complexes with DNA was investigated by steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy. Data show that the mode and strength of interaction depend on the chemical structure of the bidentate ligand. The complexes show a major static contribution to the overall interaction, giving rise to the formation of noncovalent adducts with DNA, and the particular trend observed was RePhen>ReDppz>ReBpy. Photo-oxidation at the purine bases represents the major DNA damaging mechanism. RePhen also induces single-strand breaks in a yield similar to that of base damage, suggesting an additional photosensitizing pathway. We also performed the Ames test to evaluate the cytotoxic and mutagenic properties of both non-irradiated and photoexcited complexes.
