Decomposition of NO studied by infrared emission and CO laser absorption
A diagnostic technique for monitoring the concentration of NO using absorption of CO laser radiation was developed and applied in a study of the decomposition kinetics of NO. Simultaneous measurements of infrared emission by NO at 5.3 microns were also made to validate the laser absorption technique. The data were obtained behind incident shocks in NO-N2O-Ar (or Kr) mixtures, with temperatures in the range 2400-4100 K. Rate constants for dominant reactions were inferred from comparisons with computer simulations of the reactive flow
Abstract Interpretation with Unfoldings
We present and evaluate a technique for computing path-sensitive interference
conditions during abstract interpretation of concurrent programs. In lieu of
fixed point computation, we use prime event structures to compactly represent
causal dependence and interference between sequences of transformers. Our main
contribution is an unfolding algorithm that uses a new notion of independence
to avoid redundant transformer application, thread-local fixed points to reduce
the size of the unfolding, and a novel cutoff criterion based on subsumption to
guarantee termination of the analysis. Our experiments show that the abstract
unfolding produces an order of magnitude fewer false alarms than a mature
abstract interpreter, while being several orders of magnitude faster than
solver-based tools that have the same precision.Comment: Extended version of the paper (with the same title and authors) to

In situ optofluidic control of reconfigurable photonic crystal cavities
The mobile nature of fluids is fully exploited in planar photonic crystals to not only tune and reconfigure in situ optical microcavities, in a continuous and reversible manner, but also to create "a posteriori" spatially programmable cavities. Both the amount of liquid and the location of the selectively infiltrated area can be accurately controlled either mechanically, using a microfiber manipulator, or optically, using a laser-controlled evaporation and recondensation scheme. The wide applicability is illustrated by tuning a cavity resonance over 50Âżnm, adjusting the frequency splitting of an originally degenerate cavity mode, and by freely moving a liquid-induced cavity through dragging a microdroplet
Enhanced spontaneous emission rate from single InAs quantum dots in a photonic crystal nanocavity at telecom wavelengths
The authors demonstrate coupling at 1.3 micro m between single InAs quantum dots (QDs) and a mode of a two dimensional photonic crystal (PhC) defect cavity with a quality factor of 15 000. By spectrally tuning the cavity mode, they induce coupling with excitonic lines. They perform a time integrated and time-resolved photoluminescence and measure an eightfold increase in the spontaneous emission rate inducing a coupling efficiency of 96%. These measurements indicate the potential of single QDs in PhC cavities as efficient single-photon emitters for fiber-based quantum information processing applications. [on SciFinder (R)
Integrated liquid-core optical fibers --- ultra-efficient nonlinear liquid photonics
We have developed a novel integrated platform for liquid photonics based on
liquid core optical fiber (LCOF). The platform is created by fusion splicing
liquid core optical fiber to standard single-mode optical fiber making it fully
integrated and practical - a major challenge that has greatly hindered progress
in liquid-photonic applications. As an example, we report here the realization
of ultralow threshold Raman generation using an integrated CS2 filled LCOF
pumped with sub-nanosecond pulses at 1064nm and 532nm. The measured energy
threshold for the Stokes generation is ~ 1nJ, about three orders of magnitude
lower than previously reported values in the literature for hydrogen gas. The
integrated LCOF platform opens up new possibilities for ultralow power
nonlinear optics such as efficient white light generation for displays, mid-IR
generation, slow light generation, parametric amplification, all-optical
switching and wavelength conversion using liquids that have orders of magnitude
larger optical nonlinearities compared with silica glass.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Field test of quantum key distribution in the Tokyo QKD Network
A novel secure communication network with quantum key distribution in a

demonstrate secure TV conferencing over a distance of 45km, stable long-term
operation, and application to secure mobile phones.Comment: 21 pages, 19 figure
Relational Thread-Modular Abstract Interpretation Under Relaxed Memory Models
International audienceWe address the verification problem of numeric properties in many-threaded concurrent programs under weakly consistent memory models, especially TSO. We build on previous work that proposed an abstract interpretation method to analyse these programs with rela-tional domains. This method was not sufficient to analyse more than two threads in a decent time. Our contribution here is to rely on a rely-guarantee framework with automatic inference of thread interferences to design an analysis with a thread-modular approach and describe re-lational abstractions of both thread states and interferences. We show how to adapt the usual computing procedure of interferences to the additional issues raised by weakly consistent memories. We demonstrate the precision and the performance of our method on a few examples, operating a prototype analyser that verifies safety properties like mutual exclusion. We discuss how weak memory models affect the scalability results compared to a sequentially consistent environment
In situâDirected Growth of Organic Nanofibers and Nanoflakes: Electrical and Morphological Properties
Organic nanostructures made from organic molecules such as para-hexaphenylene (p-6P) could form nanoscale components in future electronic and optoelectronic devices. However, the integration of such fragile nanostructures with the necessary interface circuitry such as metal electrodes for electrical connection continues to be a significant hindrance toward their large-scale implementation. Here, we demonstrate in situâdirected growth of such organic nanostructures between pre-fabricated contacts, which are sourceâdrain gold electrodes on a transistor platform (bottom-gate) on silicon dioxide patterned by a combination of optical lithography and electron beam lithography. The dimensions of the gold electrodes strongly influence the morphology of the resulting structures leading to notably different electrical properties. The ability to control such nanofiber or nanoflake growth opens the possibility for large-scale optoelectronic device fabrication
Defensive coping and health-related quality of life in chronic kidney disease: a cross-sectional study

Abstract

Background

Coping with the stresses of chronic disease is considered as a key factor in the perceived impairment of health related quality of life (HRQL). Little is known though about these associations in chronic kidney disease (CKD). The present study aimed to investigate the relationship of defensive coping and HRQL among patients in different CKD stages, after adjusting for psychological distress, sociodemographic and disease-related variables.

Methods

The sample consisted of 98 CKD patients, attending a university nephrology department. Seventy-nine (79) pre-dialysis patients of disease stages 3 to 4 and 19 dialysis patients were included. HRQL was assessed by the 36-item Short-Form health survey (SF-36), defensive coping by the Rationality/Emotional Defensiveness (R/ED) scale of the Lifestyle Defense Mechanism Inventory (LDMI) and psychological distress by the depression and anxiety scales of the revised Hopkins Symptom CheckList (SCL-90-R). Regression analyses were carried out to examine the association between SF-36 dimensions and defensive coping style.

Results

Patients on dialysis had worse scores on SF-36 scales measuring physical aspects of HRQL. In the fully adjusted analysis, a higher defensive coping score was significantly associated with a lower score on the mental component summary (MCS) scale of the SF-36 (worse mental health). In contrast, a higher defensive score showed a small positive association with the physical component summary (PCS) scale of the SF-36 (better health), but this was marginally significant.

Conclusions

The results provided evidence that emotional defensiveness as a coping style tends to differentially affect the mental and the physical component of HRQL in CKD. Clinicians should be aware of the effects of long-term denial and could examine the possibility of screening for defensive coping and depression in recently diagnosed CKD patients with the aim to improve both physical and mental health.</p
Near-field mapping of quantum dot emission from single-photonic crystal cavity modes
We directly investigate, by means of near-field spectroscopy, the spatial distribution of the optical cavity modes of 2D photonic crystal microcavities. Numerical simulations confirm that the photoluminescence maps of quantum dots embedded in the photonic structure qualitatively match the spatial modulation of the electric field intensity.
