    The Economics of Risk

    Get PDF
This collection offers an economics-based overview of the various facets of risk. It contains six papers that examine a broad array of research relating to risk. Two papers examine risk management and its application to decision making as well as what researchers have learned over the past few decades in their theoretical investigations of risk. The remaining chapters examine how risk plays out in the particular markets in which it has a significant presence, including casino gambling enterprises, agricultural markets, auctions, and health insurance.https://research.upjohn.org/up_press/1176/thumbnail.jp

The Metaphysical Bases of the Doctrine of God in Aquinas and Augustine

Most basically this thesis is concerned with the problem of schism. It attempts to discover the nature of the opposition between two theologies. Schisms based on statements interpreted grammatically are tragically naĂŻve, on personalities idolatrous. It is theology and the practical consequences of theology which alone can justify schism. And to discover the opposition between theologies requires an analysis of the basis of the statement of that theology

Donald J. Meyer leads a group of notable health economists who explore critical issues—and their economic impacts—facing the nation\u27s healthcare system today. These include lifestyle choices and their health impacts, decisions on medical care and self-care, the fee-for-service payment model, disability and workers’ compensation insurance claims, long-term care, and how various aspects of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) impact the nation’s healthcare system. Contributors include M. Kate Bundorf, Marcus Dillender, John H. Goddeeris, Donald J. Meyer, Edward C. Norton, and Charles E. Phelps.https://research.upjohn.org/up_press/1256/thumbnail.jp

Project sanitarium:playing tuberculosis to its end game

    Get PDF
Interdisciplinary and collaborative projects between industry and academia provide exceptional opportunities for learning. Project Sanitarium is a serious game for Windows PC and Tablet which aims to embed learning about tuberculosis (TB) through the player taking on the role of a doctor and solving cases across the globe. The project developed as a collaboration between staff and undergraduate students at the School of Arts, Media and Computer Games at Abertay University working with academics and researchers from the Infection Group at the University of St Andrews. The project also engaged industry partners Microsoft and DeltaDNA. The project aimed to educate students through a workplace simulation pedagogical model, encourage public engagement at events and through news coverage and lastly to prototype whether games could be used to simulate a virtual clinical trial. The project was embedded in the Abertay undergraduate programme where students are presented with real world problems to solve through design and technology. The result was a serious game prototype that utilized game design techniques and technology to demystify and educate players about the diagnosis and treatment of one of the world’s oldest and deadliest diseases, TB. Project Sanitarium aims to not only educate the player, but allows the player to become a part of a simulated drug trial that could potentially help create new treatments in the fight against TB. The game incorporates a mathematical model that is based on data from real-world drug trials. The interdisciplinary pedagogical model provides undergraduates with workplace simulation, wider industry collaboration and access to academic expertise to solve challenging and complex problems

    PPC750 Performance Monitor

    Get PDF
The PPC750 Performance Monitor (Perfmon) is a computer program that helps the user to assess the performance characteristics of application programs running under the Wind River VxWorks real-time operating system on a PPC750 computer. Perfmon generates a user-friendly interface and collects performance data by use of performance registers provided by the PPC750 architecture. It processes and presents run-time statistics on a per-task basis over a repeating time interval (typically, several seconds or minutes) specified by the user. When the Perfmon software module is loaded with the user s software modules, it is available for use through Perfmon commands, without any modification of the user s code and at negligible performance penalty. Per-task run-time performance data made available by Perfmon include percentage time, number of instructions executed per unit time, dispatch ratio, stack high water mark, and level-1 instruction and data cache miss rates. The performance data are written to a file specified by the user or to the serial port of the compute

Development and Validation of Implicit Measures for Organizational Climate

    Get PDF
Organizational climate is the shared perceptions and valuations people hold about their experiences in the workplace. Organizational climate research has relied upon self-report measures, which can be influenced by impression management and inaccurate self-knowledge artifacts. This research used IAT procedures to develop measures of selected aspects of organizational climate and examined the relationships of the implicit measures with theoretically related explicit measures according to a multitrait-multimethod design. Confirmatory factor analyses of alternative latent trait models provided evidence of convergent and discriminant validity. Future research might focus upon developing measures with better psychometric properties and exploring the potential for incremental predictive validity
