Parkinson\u27s Disease (PD) affects over 1% of the population over 60 years of age and is expected to reach 1 million in the USA by the year 2020, growing by 60 thousand each year. It is well understood that PD is characterized by dopaminergic loss, leading to decreased executive function causing motor symptoms such as tremors, bradykinesia, dyskinesia, and freezing of gait (FoG) as well as non-motor symptoms such as loss of smell, depression, and sleep abnormalities. A PD diagnosis is difficult to make since there is no worldwide approved test and difficult to manage since its manifestations are widely heterogeneous among subjects. Thus, understanding the patient subsets and the neural biomarkers that set them apart will lead to improved personalized care. To explore the physiological alternations caused by PD on neurological pathways and their effect on motor control, it is necessary to detect the neural activity and its dissociation with healthy physiological function. To this effect, this study presents a custom ultra-wearable sensor solution, consisting of electroencephalograph, electromyograph, ground reaction force, and symptom measurement sensors for the exploration of neural biomarkers during active gait paradigms. Additionally, this study employed novel de-noising techniques for dealing with the motion artifacts associated with active gait EEG recordings and compared time-frequency features between a group of PD with FoG and a group of age-matched controls and found significant differences between several EEG frequency bands during start and end of normal walking (with a p\u3c0.05)

Solving clinical case by writing-report lacks of students sympathies and interest in many cases. Make a short film is a novelty that really like to the students and may improve their arguing and planning capacities and their communication skills. Aim: To evaluate the impact of presenting and resolving clinical cases through filming a short-film in the communication skills development and in the learning of medicines in Podiatry undergraduate students. Methods: A two-year study in which students were invited to voluntarily form groups (3 students maximum). Each group has to design and film a short-film (8 min maximum) showing a clinical case in which medicines’ use was needed to treat feet pathology. A camera, a mobile-phone's video editor or whatever they may use was allowed. The job of each group was supervised and helped by a teacher. The students were invited to present their work to the rest of the class. After each short-film projection the students were encouraged to ask questions if they wanted to do it. After all the projections the students voluntarily answered a satisfaction survey. Results: Students of Pharmacology of Podiatry Degree, N=101, 55.6% female, 20±1.3 years old were enrolled. 37 short-films showing a clinical case were made. The average time spent by students in making the film was 12.4±8 h. The percentage of students which were satisfied with this way of presentation of the clinical cases was 75.2%. Conclusion: Filmed clinical cases performed by student of Pharmacology of the Podiatry Degree improved their communication skills.Universidad de Málaga. This research identifies the particularities of the industrial design process in 18 manufacturing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the central region of Venezuela. To achieve this result, an investigation of the current status of the situation was done with the purpose of establishing a theoretical framework as basis. Following a qualitative approach, subsequently the phenomenon under study was identified and an initial response to this approach was obtained, leading to the selection of the method of semi-structured interviews. The result of these interviews, and the process of triangulation with other data allowed to create an exploratory case of studies. For the data analysis it was used the Atlas.ti software, which allowed the generation of categories as well as coding and grouping concepts based on similarities. As a result, after a selective comparison of propositions, a Grounded Theory represented by an explanatory model was established, as well as a design process as a dynamic capacity in SMEs manufacturing, which is divided into three levels, namely trigger, execution and manufacturing. Keywords: design process, dynamic capability, SMEs, design management

White sands missile range non-track optics: streamlining the process of conducting business for improved customer support

    Get PDF
Budget overruns and scheduling difficulties within the White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) test community have become more prevalent of late. Two of the biggest customer complaints have been that WSMR is too expensive, and that the scheduling process is slow and inflexible; the WSMR Non-track Optics organization has been suggested as the main contributor to these problems. WSMR Non-track Optics manages multiple types of specialized static cameras, networking instrumentation, and vehicles to transport and control its equipment, but has shown itself unable to support numerous test activities scheduled during the same timeframe. The focus of this thesis is to define the process whereby requirements for Non-track Optics support are routed, identify process inefficiencies within the organization, and recommend solutions for the Non-track Optics organization to successfully adopt the pull method, where the ability to set-up instrumentation and support exactly what the customers want, when they need it, is achieved within budget. In identifying and addressing these inefficiencies, solutions can be applied resulting in WSMR becoming a more affordable and customer-oriented test range.http://archive.org/details/whitesandsmissil1094538887DoD Civilian, Department of the Army WSMRDoD Civilian, Department of the Army JIEDDOApproved for public release; distribution is unlimited

    Get PDF
This research was focused in the motivational strategies that influence 11th grade students of English language class at Amistad Quebec School. Three main factors were identified in the teaching -learning process of this grade. The factors are the following: intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, traditional motivation and language anxiety. Extrinsic motivation, which leads to negative motive, attitude, and discouragement in participants, teacher and students, extrinsic motivation overrides intrinsic motivation in that some students are expected to finish the scholastic year to find a job. Traditionally, students do not use English outside of the classroom because classes usually focus on repetitive strategies. Also, old tendencies contribute to low student achievement in general. Language anxiety, in which students feel afraid to use what they have learned in the classroom, contributes to low achievement of the target language. In this investigation, interviews and focal groups will be used to understand how strategies used by teachers affect student motivation. In general, this research considers the relationship between traditional and modern methods in the engagement of students in English class, the attitude of the teacher toward English, and the ways in which the teacher motivates his student

gdbOF: A Debugging Tool for OpenFOAM

    Get PDF
OpenFOAM® libraries are a great contribution to CFD community and a powerful way to create solvers and other tools. Nevertheless in this creative process a deep knowledge is needed concerning with classes structure, for value storage in geometric fields and also for matrices resulting from equation systems, becoming a hard task for debugging. To help in this process a new tool, called gdbOF, attachable to gdb (GNU debugger) is presented in this paper. It allows to analyze classes structure at debugging time. This application is implemented by gdb macros, these macros can access to code classes and also to their data in a transparent way, giving the requested information. This tool is tested for different application cases, such as the assemble and storage of matrices in a scalar advective–diffusive problem, non orthogonal correction methods in purely diffusive tests and multiphase solvers based on Volume of Fluid Method. In these tests several types of data are checked, such as: internal and boundary vector and scalar values from solution fields, fluxes in cell faces, boundary patches and boundary conditions. As additional features of this tool data dumping to file and a graphical monitoring of fields are presented. All these capabilities give to gdbOF a wide range of use not only in academic tests but also in real problems.Fil: Marquez Damian, Santiago.
