    Thermoregulation in captive broad-snouted caiman (Caiman latirostris)

    Background: Crocodilians are ectothermic animals. For this reason, the environmental temperature has substantial effects on their physiology and behavior. The thermoregulatory behavior of these animals involves the selective use of different types of environments. This behavior enables them to reach the temperature level for their metabolic activities. This study aimed to determine the influence of sex, body size, and reproductive stage on the body temperature (T b) of adult broad-snouted caiman (Caiman latirostris) in captivity. Thermal sensors were surgically implanted in the peritoneal cavity of 16 adult females and 4 adult males and programmed to register T b hourly during 6 months. Results: The diel T b pattern of the broad-snouted caiman reflected the variation among the microenvironmental temperatures used by the species (water surface, pool bottom, and ground). The sex of the animals had influence on their T b, but body size did not. Reproductive females had higher T b than non-reproductive females during October to early November. It is possible that this difference is a result of the ovulation period of the species. Sick animals appeared to show behavioral fever. Conclusions: The results of the present study suggest that several factors can affect the T b of adult broad-snouted caiman in captivity. Future studies should focus on the possible effect of thermoregulatory behavior on individuals' growth rate and reproductive performance.Fil: Bassetti, Luís A. B..     Oral bacterial microbiota and traumatic injuries of free-ranging Phrynops geoffroanus (Testudines, Chelidae) in southeastern Brazil

    During 2006 and 2007, we collected free-ranging Phrynops geoffroanus, from two anthropogenically altered rivers in southeastern Brazil. Oral microbiological samples were taken for isolation of aerobic and facultative anaerobic bacteria; a physical examination was performed;and we evaluated possible effects on the turtles’ health. Twenty-nine species of bacteria were isolated in Piracicaba River turtles (n=10), and twenty-four species in Piracicamirim stream turtles (n=8), most of them gram-negative. In both sites, potential pathogens for reptiles were: Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter agglomerans, Citrobacter freundii, and Bacillus sp. Although boatpropeller lesions were common on the carapace of the turtles, we have not found turtles with signs of clinical diseases. The oral bacterial microbiota of P. geoffroanus inhabiting the Piracicaba River basin are composed of a diverse microbe spectrum, and long-term studies of the effects of pollution and traumatic injuries on this population and its microbial flora are warranted

    Entre 2006 e 2007, coletamos amostras microbiológicas da cavidade oral de cágados Phrynops geoffroanus de vida livre, em dois rios antropizados da região sudeste do Brasil, para o isolamento de bactérias aeróbicas e anaeróbicas facultativas, e realizamos um exame físico e avaliamos possíveis efeitos sobre o estado de saúde dos animais. Vinte e nove espécies de bactérias foram isoladas em cágados do rio Piracicaba (n=10), e vinte e quatro espécies em animais do ribeirão Piracicamirim (n=8), a maioria delas gram-negativas. Em ambos os sítios estudados foram isolados patógenos potenciais para répteis, como Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter agglomerans, Citrobacter freundii e Bacillus sp. Embora lesões na carapaça dos cágados, causadas por hélices de barcos, foram um achado comum no exame físico, não encontramos animais com sinais clínicos de doenças. A microbiota bacteriana oral dos cágados que habitam a bacia do rio Piracicaba é composta por um amplo espectro de bactérias, e estudos de longa duração sobre os efeitos da poluição e de lesões traumáticas nesta população e de sua microbiota oral são recomendados.During 2006 and 2007, we collected free-ranging Phrynops geoffroanus, from two anthropogenically altered rivers in southeastern Brazil.     Vitamin D deficiency is independently associated with mortality among critically ill patients

    OBJECTIVE: Studies suggest an association between vitamin D deficiency and morbidity/mortality in critically ill patients. Several issues remain unexplained, including which vitamin D levels are related to morbidity and mortality and the relevance of vitamin D kinetics to clinical outcomes. We conducted this study to address the association of baseline vitamin D levels and vitamin D kinetics with morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients. METHOD: In 135 intensive care unit (ICU) patients, vitamin D was prospectively measured on admission and weekly until discharge from the ICU. The following outcomes of interest were analyzed: 28-day mortality, mechanical ventilation, length of stay, infection rate, and culture positivity. RESULTS: Mortality rates were higher among patients with vitamin D levels ;12 ng/mL) (32.2% vs. 13.2%), with an adjusted relative risk of 2.2 (95% CI 1.07-4.54; p< 0.05). There were no differences in the length of stay, ventilation requirements, infection rate, or culture positivity. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that low vitamin D levels on ICU admission are an independent risk factor for mortality in critically ill patients. Low vitamin D levels at ICU admission may have a causal relationship with mortality and may serve as an indicator for vitamin D replacement among critically ill patients

    Effect of different levels of urea added to a mineral salt mixture upon the intake and digestibility of two tropical grass hays

    Foram conduzidos dois ensaios, com 25 novilhos Nelore estabulados com o objetivo de estudar o efeito da uréia sobre o consumo e a digestibilidade de fenos de capim-jaraguá (Hyparrhenia rufa, (Ness) Stapf.) e de capim-braquiária (Brachiaria ruziziensis, Gemam & Evrard). Foi utilizado o delineamento inteiramente casualizado com cinco tratamentos e cinco repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram de níveis de uréia (zero, 20%, 40%, 60% e 80%) adicionados à mistura mineral e os ensaios tiveram duração de 56 e 49 dias. Os coeficientes de digestibilidade da matéria seca (MS), da matéria orgânica (MO), da fibra em detergente ácido e da energia bruta permaneceram inalterados com a suplementação com uréia. Para ambos os fenos foram observados aumentos nos coeficientes de digestibilidade e nos consumos de proteína bruta (PB) e maiores retenções de nitrogênio em consequência da suplementação. No caso do feno de jaraguá (5,3% de PB), houve aumento nos consumos de MS, de MO digestível e de energia metabolizável pela suplementação. Com o feno de braquiária (8,4% de PB) não houve efeito da uréia em tais parâmetros.The effect of urea suplementation on intake and digestibility of jaraguá grass (Hyparrhenia rufa (Ness), Stapf.) and Brachiaria grass (Brachiariaruziensis, Germain & Evrard) hays was studied with 25 Nelore (Zebu) steers in a completely randomized design. Steers were housed in individual pens where they received free choice the treatments consisting of mineral mix plus zero, 20%, 40%, 60% or 80% urea in two trials of 56 and 49 days. Dry matter, organic matter, acid detergent fiber and gross energy digestibility remained the same for all treatments. Crude protein intake, protein digestibility as well as nitrogen retention were increased in the urea supplemented groups as compared to controls. Dry matter, digestible organic matter and metabolizable energy intakes from jaraguá hay (5,3% CP) increased in the urea supplemented groups but no such effect was observed with Brachiaria hay (8,4% CP)

    Plant cell cultures of Nordic berry species: Phenolic and carotenoid profiling and biological assessments

    Plant cell cultures from cloudberry (CL), lingonberry (LI), stone berry (ST), arctic bramble (AB), and strawberry (SB) were studied in terms of their polyphenol and carotenoid composition, antioxidant activity, antihemolytic activity and cytotoxicity effects on cancerous cells. High-resolution mass spectrometry data showed that LI, presented the highest antioxidant activity, contained the highest contents of flavones, phenolic acids, lignans, and total carotenoids, while CL, ST and SB presented the opposite behavior. AB and SB presented the lowest FRAP and CUPRAC values, while AB and CL presented the lowest reducing power. SB presented the lowest antioxidant activity measured by single electron transfer assays and the lowest content of lignans, phenolic acids, and flavones. CL and LI decreased the viability of in vitro mammary gland adenocarcinoma while only LI decreased the viability of in vitro lung carcinoma and showed protective effects of human erythrocytes against mechanical hemolysis.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    The importance of acoustic background modelling in CNN-based detection of the neotropical White-lored Spinetail (Aves, Passeriformes, Furnaridae)

    Machine learning tools are widely used in support of bioacoustics studies, and there are numerous publications on the applicability of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to the automated presence-absence detection of species. However, the relation between the merit of acoustic background modelling and the recognition performance needs to be better understood. In this study, we investigated the influence of acoustic background substance on the performance of the acoustic detector of the White-lored Spinetail (Synallaxis albilora). Two detector designs were evaluated: the 152-layer ResNet with transfer learning and a purposely created CNN. We experimented with acoustic background representations trained with season-specific (dry, wet, and all-season) data and without explicit modelling to evaluate its influence on the detection performance. The detector permits monitoring of the diel behaviour and breeding time of White-lored Spinetail solely based on the changes in the vocal activity patterns. We report an advantageous performance when background modelling is used, precisely when trained with all-season data. The highest classification accuracy (84.5%) was observed for the purposely created CNN model.
