    Preparation and structure characterization of soluble bone collagen peptide chelating calcium

    In this study, G-25 gel chromatography, X-diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to analyze soluble collagen peptides chelating calcium. Collagen peptide hydrolysis can be divided into four components using G-25 gel chromatography. Each component of calcium binding capacity was different and the components whose molecular weight was less than 5000 Da had a relatively high calcium binding capacity. In the infrared spectra experimental certification, after the collagen peptides had combined with calcium, amide I, II wave number was displaced, which indicated that amino nitrogen atoms and oxygen atoms on the carboxyl groups were involved in chelation. In the UV scan spectra, the characteristic absorption peak of the collagen peptide’s carbonyl and the peptide bond was clearly shifted, indicating that collagen peptides have reacted with calcium. In SEM spectra, a lot of white grains were seen to be "embedded" clearly in the surface of the collagen peptide, indicating that besides the reaction of coordination between collagen peptides and calcium, there was a certain degree of adsorption. After combination with calcium, the X-ray diffraction spectra showed that the no rules non-crystal structure collagen peptides turned into rules crystal structure. According to the structure analysis which showed that collagen peptide chelated calcium is a five-membered ring structure, calcium is in the center and was combined strongly with both the amino- and carboxyl-group.Key words: Bone, calcium binding, molecular weight, collagen peptide

    Calderon Multiplicative Preconditioned EFIE With Perturbation Method

    In this paper, we address the low-frequency breakdown and inaccuracy problems in the Calderón multiplicative preconditioned electric field integral equation (CMP-EFIE) operator, and propose the perturbation method as a remedy for three-dimensional perfect electric conductor (PEC) scatterers. The electric currents at different frequency orders as a power series can be obtained accurately in a recursive manner by solving the same matrix system with updated right hand side vectors. This method does not either require a search for the loops in the loop-tree/-star based method or include charge as additional unknown in the augmented EFIE method. Numerical examples show the far-field pattern can be accurately computed at extremely low frequencies by the proposed perturbation method. © 1963-2012 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    Phytochemical Constituents and Pharmacological Activities of Plants from the Genus Adiantum: A Review

    Adiantum is a genus of ca. 200 species in the family Adiantaceae, distributed extensively across the world from cool temperate zones to hot tropical regions. A lot of Adiantum species have been used in traditional Chinese medicine to cure human and animal diseases including relief of internal heat or fever, enhancement of urination, removal of urinary calculus, and sundry other curative claims. Chemical studies have shown the presence of various classes of compounds, the main ones being triterpenoids, flavonoids, phenyl propanoids, steroids, alicyclic acids, lipids and long-chain compounds. The extract of this genus as well as pure compounds isolated from it have been demonstrated to possess multiple pharmacological activities such as analgesic, antinociceptive, anti-implantation, and antimicrobial activities. In this review, we have addressed the phytochemistry and pharmacological activities of the Adiantum species in order to collate existing information on this plant as well as highlight its multi-activity properties as a medicinal agent.Keywords: Adiantum species, Adiantaceae, Phytochemical constituents, Pharmacological activities

    Optimized system for plant regeneration of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus Thumb.)

    The objective of this study was to establish an efficient and reproducible in vitro plant regeneration for Citrullus lanatus cv. Zaojia. To achieve optimal conditions for adventitious shoot induction, five explants (entire cotyledons, distal cotyledons, proximal cotyledons, cotyledonary node A and cotyledonary node B) were tested on MS medium supplemented with different concentrations and combinations of growth regulators (0 to 0.2 mg/L IAA and 1.0 to 5.0 mg/L BA), the results showed that entire cotyledons cultured in MS + BA (2.0mg/L) + IAA(0.2mg/L) achieved the highest regenerated rate (89.67%) and the optimal protocol screened in this experiment had 7.69 ± 0.10 shoots per explants. Adventitious shoots were able to elongate both on MS medium with 0.2 mg/L KT and 0.2 mg/L NAA; IBA 0.3mg/L was found to be effective in the production of root. Acclimatized plantlets transferred to pot resumed growth, and their stems and leaves elongated and expanded in one month.Key words: Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus Thumb.), optimized system, regeneration, cotyledon explants, cotyledonary node

    Guidance and Ethical Considerations for Undertaking Transgender Health Research and Institutional Review Boards Adjudicating this Research

    The purpose of this review is to create a set of provisional criteria for Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) to refer to when assessing the ethical orientation of transgender health research proposals. We began by searching for literature on this topic using databases and the reference lists of key articles, resulting in a preliminary set of criteria. We then collaborated to develop the following nine guidelines: (1) Whenever possible, research should be grounded, from inception to dissemination, in a meaningful collaboration with community stakeholders; (2) language and framing of transgender health research should be non-stigmatizing; (3) research should be disseminated back to the community; (4) the diversity of the transgender and gender diverse (TGGD) community should be accurately reflected and sensitively reflected; (5) informed consent must be meaningful, without coercion or undue influence; (6) the protection of participant confidentiality should be paramount; (7) alternative consent procedures should be considered for TGGD minors; (8) research should align with current professional standards that refute conversion, reorientation, or reparative therapy; and (9) IRBs should guard against the temptation to avoid, limit, or delay research on this subject

    Path integral based convolution and pooling for graph neural networks

    Graph neural networks (GNNs) extends the functionality of traditional neural networks to graph-structured data. Similar to CNNs, an optimized design of graph convolution and pooling is key to success. Borrowing ideas from physics, we propose a path integral based graph neural networks (PAN) for classification and regression tasks on graphs. Specifically, we consider a convolution operation that involves every path linking the message sender and receiver with learnable weights depending on the path length, which corresponds to the maximal entropy random walk. It generalizes the graph Laplacian to a new transition matrix we call maximal entropy transition (MET) matrix derived from a path integral formalism. Importantly, the diagonal entries of the MET matrix are directly related to the subgraph centrality, thus lead to a natural and adaptive pooling mechanism. PAN provides a versatile framework that can be tailored for different graph data with varying sizes and structures. We can view most existing GNN architectures as special cases of PAN. Experimental results show that PAN achieves state-of-the-art performance on various graph classification/regression tasks, including a new benchmark dataset from statistical mechanics we propose to boost applications of GNN in physical sciences

    Effect of Electromagnetic Treatment on Fatigue Resistance of 2011 Aluminum Alloy

    Beneficial effects of the electromagnetic treatment on fatigue resistance were reported on several engineering alloys. These could be linked to the dislocation activity and the rearrangement of the crystal structure of the material under the electromagnetic field (EMF), resulting in delayed crack initiation. This paper presents an experimental study on the effect of pulsed electromagnetic treatment on the fatigue resistance of 2011 aluminum alloy. Circular cantilever specimens with loads at their ends were tested on rotating fatigue machine SM1090. Fatigue lives of treated and untreated specimens were analyzed and compared systematically. It has been found that the effect of the pulsed electromagnetic treatment on the fatigue resistance is dependent on the intensity of the pulsed EMF and the number of the treatment applied. Clear beneficial effect of the pulsed electromagnetic treatment on the fatigue resistance of the aluminum alloys has been observed, demonstrating a potential new technique to industries for fatigue life extension

    Optimal coordination of TCSC and PSS2B controllers in electric power systems using MOPSO multiobjective algorithm

    Oscillations are an intrinsic phenomenon in interconnected power systems, leading to steady-state stability, safety decline, transmission power limitation, and electric power systems’ ineffective exploitation by developing power systems, particularly by connecting these systems to low-load lines. In addition, they affect the economic performance of the systems. In this study, PSS2B power system stabilizers and TCSC compensators are used to improve the stability margin of power systems. In order to coordinate TCSC compensators, the MOPSO multiobjective algorithm with integral of the time-weighted absolute error (ITAE) and figure of demerit (FD) objective functions was used. The MOPSO algorithm optimization results are compared with nondominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGAII) and multiobjective differential evolution (MODE) algorithms. The optimization results indicated a better performance of the proposed MOPSO algorithm than NSGAII and MODE. The simulations were iterated in two scenarios by creating different loading conditions in generators. The results indicated that the proposed control system, where the coordination between PSS2B power system stabilizers and TCSC compensators using the MOPSO algorithm, is better than power systems in which PSS2B Stabilizers or TCSC compensators are utilized solely. All criteria, e.g., ITAE, FD, maximum deviation range, and the required time for power oscillation damping in hybrid control systems, have been obtained.
