Study and Comparison of Surface Roughness Measurements
National audienceThis survey paper focus on recent researches whose goal is to optimize treatments on 3D meshes, thanks to a study of their surface features, and more precisely their roughness and saliency. Applications like watermarking or lossy compression can benefit from a precise roughness detection, to better hide the watermarks or quantize coarsely these areas, without altering visually the shape. Despite investigations on scale dependence leading to multi-scale approaches, an accurate roughness or pattern characterization is still lacking, but challenging for those treatments. We think there is still room for investigations that could benefit from the power of the wavelet analysis or the fractal models. Furthermore only few works are now able to differentiate roughness from saliency, though it is essential for faithfully simplifying or denoising a 3D mesh. Hence we have investigated roughness quantification methods for analog surfaces, in several domains of physics. Some roughness parameters used in these fields and the additionnal information they bring are finally studied, since we think an adaptation for 3D meshes could be beneficial
Comparison of MRI properties between multimeric DOTAGA and DO3A gadolinium-dendron conjugates
The inherent lack of sensitivity of MRI needs the development of new Gd contrast agents in order to extend 20Hz,37%, the application of this technique to cellular imaging. For this purpose, two multimeric MR contrast agents obtained by peptidic coupling between an amido amine dendron and GdDOTAGA chelates (premetalation strategy, G1-4GdDOTAGA) or DO3A derivatives which then were postmetalated (G1-4GdDO-3A) have been prepared. By comparison to the monomers, an increase of longitudinal relaxivity has been observed for both structures. Especially for G1-4GdDO-3A, a marked increase is observed between 20 and 60 MHz. This structure differs from G1-4GdDOTAGA by an increased rigidity due to the aromatic linker between each chelate and the organic framework. This has the effect of limiting local rotational movements, which has a positive impact on relaxivity
Direct-to-metal UV-cured hybrid coating for the corrosion protection of aircraft aluminium alloy
Finding eco-efficient and environmentally viable alternatives to chromate coatings represents a fundamental milestone in the aerospace industry. Here, we show a chromate-free approach to protective hybrid coatings on aluminium alloy (AA2024-T3) departing from photoinduced solâgel and cationic polymerizations. Beginning with a film of n-alkyltrimethoxysilane and diepoxy monomer, we rely on photogenerated superacids to induce the single step formation of two inorganic and organic barrier networks. Such system combines the unique aspects of photopolymerization including fast reactions, temporal control, solvent-free composition and temperature independence. Used without chemical conversion coating or anodizing, some films have passed 2000h of salt spray testing
Assessing nutritional value of ready-to-eat breakfast cereals in the province of Quebec (Canada) : a study from the Food Quality Observatory
Objective: The Food Quality Observatory was created in the province of Quebec (Canada) in 2016. In this study, the Observatory aimed to generate a methodology to (1) test the use of sales data combined with nutrient values to characterise the nutritional composition of ready-to-eat (RTE) breakfast cereals offered and purchased in the province of Quebec (Canada) and (2) verify the extent to which a front-of-pack label based on the percentage of daily value (DV) for total sugar, as a strategy to improve the food supply, would be distributed in this food category.
Design: Nutritional information were obtained by purchasing each RTE breakfast cereal available in the Greater Montreal area. Cereals were then classified according to their processing type.
Setting: The nutritional values of 331 RTE breakfast cereals available in Quebec were merged with sales data covering the period between May 2016 and May 2017. A total of 306 products were successfully cross-referenced.
Results: Granola and sweetened cereals were the most available (36·6 % and 19·6 %, respectively) and purchased (19·8 % and 40·9 % of sales, respectively). When compared with other types of cereals, granola cereals had a higher energy, fat, saturated fat, protein content and a lower Na content. A larger proportion of chocolate (65 %) and sweetened cereals (49 %) were above 15 % of the DV for sugar.
Conclusions: This study showed that the methodology developed generates important data to monitor nutritional quality of the food supply and ultimately contribute to improve the nutritional quality of processed foods
De la féminisation des titres à la rédaction épicÚne : regards croisés sur la parité linguistique
Dans cet article, HélÚne Dumais, linguiste et spécialiste de la rédaction non sexiste,
a regroupé les propos de huit spécialistes de la langue concernant la parité linguistique en
français. Ces expertes ont répondu à un questionnaire en vue de faire le point sur le
sujet : situation actuelle dans leur pays, avancées ou stagnation, initiation des jeunes
gĂ©nĂ©rations et avenir en la matiĂšre sont autant dâaspects abordĂ©s. Il en ressort que la
fĂ©minisation des titres progresse lentement mais sĂ»rement (elle est mĂȘme acquise dans
certains cas), alors que la question des textes, oĂč lâon tient Ă manifester la prĂ©sence des
femmes, suscite des réactions diverses. Selon les témoignages recueillis, sensibilisation,
éducation et volonté politique sont les avenues à privilégier pour assurer la pérennité dans
le domaine.In this article, HĂ©lĂšne Dumais, a linguist and non-sexist writing specialist, has
compiled the thoughts of eight language specialists on linguistic equality in the French
language. By means of a questionnaire, they were asked to voice their opinion on the current
situation in their country, if it is progressing or stagnating, what initiatives the rising
generations have taken and the future of linguistic equality, among other issues. It seems
that the feminization of titles is progressing slowly, but surely (with some titles already
established) while making the female presence known in texts is receiving mixed reactions.
According to the experts, awareness-raising, education and political will are the keys to
attaining linguistic equality
In utero and childhood exposure to parental tobacco smoke, and allergies in schoolchildren
SummaryAmong early-life environmental factors, parental smoking (ETS) has been associated with adverse respiratory outcomes in children. The aim of the study was to evaluate whether parental smoking might lead to asthma and allergies taking into account family history of asthma, personal atopy, breast feeding as confounders and owing pets and day-care during the first 6 months of life as modifiers. About 9000 children of fourth and fifth grade were selected in six cities of France. About 7798 answered an epidemiological questionnaire, underwent a medical examination including skin prick test positivity to common allergens, skin examination for eczema, and run test to assess exercise-induced asthma (EIA). Prevalence of allergies was, respectively, 25.2% for eczema, 12.9% for rhinitis, 9.9% for asthma and 25% for atopy. About 8.3% had an EIA. About 21.6% of children were exposed to maternal tobacco smoking during pregnancy. Maternal smoking, in utero and later, was significantly related to lifetime wheezing (odds ratio (OR): 1.24[1.10â1.56]) and asthma (OR: 1.22[1.04â1.66]). There was no association between atopy, rhinitis, eczema and parental smoking, respectively. ETS remains a risk factor of wheezing in childhood. Counselling parents of children to quit smoking still remains a public health policy

Natural mutations in the sensor kinase of the PhoPR two-component regulatory system modulate virulence of ancestor-like tuberculosis bacilli
The molecular factors and genetic adaptations that contributed to the emergence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) from an environmental Mycobacterium canettii-like ancestor, remain poorly investigated. In MTB, the PhoPR two-component regulatory system controls production and secretion of proteins and lipid virulence effectors. Here, we describe that several mutations, present in phoR of M. canettii relative to MTB, impact the expression of the PhoP regulon and the pathogenicity of the strains. First, we establish a molecular model of PhoR and show that some substitutions found in PhoR of M. canettii are likely to impact the structure and activity of this protein. Second, we show that STB-K, the most attenuated available M. canettii strain, displays lower expression of PhoP-induced genes than MTB. Third, we demonstrate that genetic swapping of the phoPR allele from STB-K with the ortholog from MTB H37Rv enhances expression of PhoP-controlled functions and the capacities of the recombinant strain to colonize human macrophages, the MTB target cells, as well as to cause disease in several mouse infection models. Fourth, we extended these observations to other M. canettii strains and confirm that PhoP-controlled functions are expressed at lower levels in most M. canettii strains than in M. tuberculosis. Our findings suggest that distinct PhoR variants have been selected during the evolution of tuberculosis bacilli, contributing to higher pathogenicity and persistence of MTB in the mammalian host
