    Gender-Job Satisfaction Differences across Europe: An Indicator for Labor Market Modernization

    In 14 member states of the European Union, women's relative to men's levels of job satisfaction are compared by using data of the European Household Community Panel. The countries under consideration can be assigned to three different groups. Denmark, Finland and the Netherlands do not show significant gender-job satisfaction differences. In contrast, in Portugal men are more satisfied with their jobs than women. However, in the vast majority of the investigated countries female workers show a significantly higher level of job satisfaction. As the majority of women are disadvantaged compared to men in the labor market, the findings clearly demonstrate a gender-job satisfaction paradox in these countries. From this point of view, only Denmark, Finland and the Netherlands display gender-job satisfaction equality. The results suggest that objective (socio-economic and institutional) determinants of labor market statuses and subjective (assessed and evaluated) perspectives are mutually complementary. The more restrictive the labor market access and process is for women, the more likely a gender-job satisfaction paradox is to emerge in any country. With regard to the process of labor market modernization, the results support the hypotheses that equal opportunities for women and men like in Scandinavian countries and also partially in the Netherlands implicate that the gender-job satisfaction paradox does not appear anymore due to a fading-out process over past decades.Cross-national comparison; Gender-job satisfaction paradox; Labor supply; Labor market modernization

    Kaon and antikaon properties in cold nuclear medium

    We present results of a self-consistent calculation for the kaon and antikaon spectral functions in cold nuclear matter, using as input the kaon-nucleon and antikaon-nucleon scattering amplitudes of the vacuum. We investigate the effect of in-medium pion dressing on the antikaon-nucleon scattering amplitudes and antikaon spectral function. We find the influence of pion dressing to be minor on the antikaon spectral function and limited on the hyperon resonances causing only a small additional broadening. An exception is the \Sigma(1690). At nuclear saturation density an attractive mass shift of about 20 MeV and width of about 130 MeV is obtained. The kaon shows a repulsive mass increase of 36 MeV and a small width of the quasiparticle peak at saturation density.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Heavy Ion Physic

    Mrk 1014: An AGN Dominated ULIRG at X-rays

    In this paper we report on an XMM-Newton observation of the ultraluminous infrared QSO Mrk 1014. The X-ray observation reveals a power-law dominated (photon index of about 2.2) spectrum with a slight excess in the soft energy range. AGN and starburst emission models fit the soft excess emission equally well, however, the most plausible explanation is an AGN component as the starburst model parameter, temperature and luminosity, appear physically unrealistic. The mean luminosity of Mrk 1014 is about 2 times 10^44 erg s^-1. We have also observed excess emission at energies greater than 5 keV. This feature could be attributed to a broadened and redshifted iron complex, but deeper observations are required to constrain its origin. The light curve shows small scale variability over the 11 ks observation. There is no evidence of intrinsic absorption in Mrk 1014. The X-ray observations support the notion of an AGN dominated central engine.
