Propositional computability logic I
In the same sense as classical logic is a formal theory of truth, the
recently initiated approach called computability logic is a formal theory of
computability. It understands (interactive) computational problems as games
played by a machine against the environment, their computability as existence
of a machine that always wins the game, logical operators as operations on
computational problems, and validity of a logical formula as being a scheme of
"always computable" problems. The present contribution gives a detailed
exposition of a soundness and completeness proof for an axiomatization of one
of the most basic fragments of computability logic. The logical vocabulary of
this fragment contains operators for the so called parallel and choice
operations, and its atoms represent elementary problems, i.e. predicates in the
standard sense. This article is self-contained as it explains all relevant
concepts. While not technically necessary, however, familiarity with the
foundational paper "Introduction to computability logic" [Annals of Pure and
Applied Logic 123 (2003), pp.1-99] would greatly help the reader in
understanding the philosophy, underlying motivations, potential and utility of
computability logic, -- the context that determines the value of the present

Changing realities: perspectives on Balinese rice cultivation
This paper discusses issues of agrarian change in south-central Bali. The proximity to urban areas, especially the tourist centers along the southern coast, provides, any off-farm employment opportunities for small scale farming households. Although rice farming continues, for many households it has become a side business. The flexible nature of rice farming in terms of labour input and available casual off-farm work allows farming households to allocate their available labor to a variety of on-farm and off-farm income generating activities. The subak which unites farmers in the irrigation and cultivation of the rice crop plays an important role in supporting this flexibility. Still, the future of rice farming and the organisation behind looks rather dim with an unwilling younger generation to work in the “mud” and little appreciation of the many benefits subak provides not only to the farming but the wider community
Residual Symmetries in the Spectrum of Periodically Driven Alkali Rydberg States
We identify a fundamental structure in the spectrum of microwave driven
alkali Rydberg states, which highlights the remnants of the Coulomb symmetry in
the presence of a non-hydrogenic core. Core-induced corrections with respect to

Hundred photon microwave ionization of Rydberg atoms in a static electric field
We present analytical and numerical results for the microwave excitation of
nonhydrogenic atoms in a static electric field when up to 1000 photons are
required to ionize an atom. For small microwave fields, dynamical localization
in photon number leads to exponentially small ionization while above quantum
delocalization border ionization goes in a diffusive way. For alkali atoms in a
static field the ionization border is much lower than in hydrogen due to

On the Directional Derivative of Kemeny's Constant
In a connected graph, Kemeny's constant gives the expected time of a random
walk from an arbitrary vertex to reach a randomly-chosen vertex .
Because of this, Kemeny's constant can be interpreted as a measure of how well
a graph is connected. It is generally unknown how the addition or removal of
edges affects Kemeny's constant. Inspired by the directional derivative of the
normalized Laplacian, we derive the directional derivative of Kemeny's constant
for several graph families. In addition, we find sharp bounds for the
directional derivative of an eigenvalue of the normalized Laplacian and bounds
for the directional derivative of Kemeny's constant
Absolute frequency measurements of 85Rb nF7/2 Rydberg states using purely optical detection
A three-step laser excitation scheme is used to make absolute frequency
measurements of highly excited nF7/2 Rydberg states in 85Rb for principal
quantum numbers n=33-100. This work demonstrates the first absolute frequency
measurements of rubidium Rydberg levels using a purely optical detection
scheme. The Rydberg states are excited in a heated Rb vapour cell and Doppler
free signals are detected via purely optical means. All of the frequency
measurements are made using a wavemeter which is calibrated against a GPS
disciplined self-referenced optical frequency comb. We find that the measured
levels have a very high frequency stability, and are especially robust to
electric fields. The apparatus has allowed measurements of the states to an
accuracy of 8.0MHz. The new measurements are analysed by extracting the

Genetic structure of Tribolium castaneum populations in mills
We investigated the genetic diversity and differentiation among nine populations of Tribolium castaneum using eight polymorphic loci, including microsatellites and other insertion-deletion polymorphisms (=”indels”). Samples were collected in food processing/storage facilities located in Kansas, Nebraska, California, Louisiana, Florida and Puerto Rico. Standard population genetic analysis was applied, and an assignment test was used to assign individuals to their genetic population. All loci were polymorphic across populations, with the number of alleles per locus-population combination varying from three to fourteen. Among 72 locus-by-population combinations, 31 deviated significantly from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, which was associated with a deficiency in heterozygosity. Tribolium castaneum populations show some level of genetic structuring. Genetic differentiation between populations, using FST estimates, was significant, with FST varying from 0.018 to 0.149. AMOVA indicated that 8.32% of the variation in allele frequency resulted from comparisons among populations. Genetic distance was not significantly correlated with geographic distance. Correct assignment to the genetic population was possible in only 56% of all individuals. Together, these results revealed that geographically distinct populations of T. castaneum had low to moderate levels of genetic differentiation that was not correlated with geographic distance, and the genotypic profile of the individuals did not provide enough information for fingerprinting them with their source population. MicroRNA-24 regulates vascularity after myocardial infarction
BACKGROUND: Myocardial infarction leads to cardiac remodeling and development of heart failure. Insufficient myocardial capillary density after myocardial infarction has been identified as a critical event in this process, although the underlying mechanisms of cardiac angiogenesis are mechanistically not well understood. METHODS AND RESULTS: Here, we show that the small noncoding RNA microRNA-24 (miR-24) is enriched in cardiac endothelial cells and considerably upregulated after cardiac ischemia. MiR-24 induces endothelial cell apoptosis, abolishes endothelial capillary network formation on Matrigel, and inhibits cell sprouting from endothelial spheroids. These effects are mediated through targeting of the endothelium-enriched transcription factor GATA2 and the p21-activated kinase PAK4, which were identified by bioinformatic predictions and validated by luciferase gene reporter assays. Respective downstream signaling cascades involving phosphorylated BAD (Bcl-XL/Bcl-2-associated death promoter) and Sirtuin1 were identified by transcriptome, protein arrays, and chromatin immunoprecipitation analyses. Overexpression of miR-24 or silencing of its targets significantly impaired angiogenesis in zebrafish embryos. Blocking of endothelial miR-24 limited myocardial infarct size of mice via prevention of endothelial apoptosis and enhancement of vascularity, which led to preserved cardiac function and survival. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that miR-24 acts as a critical regulator of endothelial cell apoptosis and angiogenesis and is suitable for therapeutic intervention in the setting of ischemic heart disease.
