A clinical and haemodynamic investigation into the role of calf perforating vein surgery in patients with venous ulceration and deep venous incompetence
Objective:To determine the clinical efficacy and local haemodynamic effects of perforating vein surgery in ulcerated limbs with combined deep and perforating vein incompetence.Design:Prospective, interventional study.Materials and methods:Seven ulcerated limbs with combined primary deep and perforating vein incompetence were studied. Clinical efficacy was determined by ultimate ulcer healing and reduction in ulcer area, local haemodynamics were assessed at three sites with photoplethysmographic 90% venous refilling times (PPG RT90); both assessments were performed pre- and 1-month postoperatively.Results:None of the ulcers healed following perforating vein surgery, the median (range) ulcer areas pre- and postoperatively were 31 (7–685) cm2 and 35.5 (7–796) cm2 (Wilcoxon p = 0.07). Preoperative PPG RT90 demonstrated a global abnormality of venous function at all sites examined that persisted after perforating vein surgery.Conclusion:In the presence of deep venous incompetence perforating vein surgery had no influence on venous function or ulcer healing. We conclude that perforating vein surgery is not indicated for the treatment of venous ulceration in limbs with primary deep venous incompetence
Lesbian and bisexual women's human rights, sexual rights and sexual citizenship: negotiating sexual health in England.
Lesbian and bisexual women's sexual health is neglected in much Government policy and practice in England and Wales. This paper examines lesbian and bisexual women's negotiation of sexual health, drawing on findings from a small research project. Themes explored include invisibility and lack of information, influences on decision-making and sexual activities and experiences of services and barriers to sexual healthcare. Key issues of importance in this respect are homophobic and heterosexist social contexts. Drawing on understandings of lesbian, gay and bisexual human rights, sexual rights and sexual citizenship, it is argued that these are useful lenses through which to examine and address lesbian and bisexual women's sexual health and related inequalities
A High Luminosity e+e- Collider to study the Higgs Boson
A strong candidate for the Standard Model Scalar boson, H(126), has been
discovered by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments. In order to study
this fundamental particle with unprecedented precision, and to perform
precision tests of the closure of the Standard Model, we investigate the
possibilities offered by An e+e- storage ring collider. We use a design
inspired by the B-factories, taking into account the performance achieved at
LEP2, and imposing a synchrotron radiation power limit of 100 MW. At the most
relevant centre-of-mass energy of 240 GeV, near-constant luminosities of 10^34
cm^{-2}s^{-1} are possible in up to four collision points for a ring of 27km
circumference. The achievable luminosity increases with the bending radius, and
for 80km circumference, a luminosity of 5 10^34 cm^{-2}s^{-1} in four collision
points appears feasible. Beamstrahlung becomes relevant at these high
luminosities, leading to a design requirement of large momentum acceptance both
in the accelerating system and in the optics. The larger machine could reach
the top quark threshold, would yield luminosities per interaction point of
10^36 cm^{-2}s^{-1} at the Z pole (91 GeV) and 2 10^35 cm^{-2}s^{-1} at the W
pair production threshold (80 GeV per beam). The energy spread is reduced in
the larger ring with respect to what is was at LEP, giving confidence that beam
polarization for energy calibration purposes should be available up to the W

Bose-Einstein condensation in multilayers
The critical BEC temperature of a non interacting boson gas in a
layered structure like those of cuprate superconductors is shown to have a
minimum , at a characteristic separation between planes . It is
shown that for , increases monotonically back up to the ideal
Bose gas suggesting that a reduction in the separation between planes,
as happens when one increases the pressure in a cuprate, leads to an increase
in the critical temperature. For finite plane separation and penetrability the
specific heat as a function of temperature shows two novel crests connected by
a ridge in addition to the well-known BEC peak at associated with the
3D behavior of the gas. For completely impenetrable planes the model reduces to
many disconnected infinite slabs for which just one hump survives becoming a
peak only when the slab widths are infinite.Comment: Four pages, four figure
An assessment of the resolution limitation due to radiation-damage in x-ray diffraction microscopy
X-ray diffraction microscopy (XDM) is a new form of x-ray imaging that is
being practiced at several third-generation synchrotron-radiation x-ray
facilities. Although only five years have elapsed since the technique was first
introduced, it has made rapid progress in demonstrating high-resolution
threedimensional imaging and promises few-nm resolution with much larger
samples than can be imaged in the transmission electron microscope. Both life-
and materials-science applications of XDM are intended, and it is expected that
the principal limitation to resolution will be radiation damage for life
science and the coherent power of available x-ray sources for material science.
In this paper we address the question of the role of radiation damage. We use a
statistical analysis based on the so-called "dose fractionation theorem" of
Hegerl and Hoppe to calculate the dose needed to make an image of a lifescience
sample by XDM with a given resolution. We conclude that the needed dose scales
with the inverse fourth power of the resolution and present experimental
evidence to support this finding. To determine the maximum tolerable dose we
have assembled a number of data taken from the literature plus some
measurements of our own which cover ranges of resolution that are not well
covered by reports in the literature. The tentative conclusion of this study is
that XDM should be able to image frozen-hydrated protein samples at a
resolution of about 10 nm with "Rose-criterion" image quality.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
The glassy response of solid He-4 to torsional oscillations
We calculated the glassy response of solid He-4 to torsional oscillations
assuming a phenomenological glass model. Making only a few assumptions about
the distribution of glassy relaxation times in a small subsystem of otherwise
rigid solid He-4, we can account for the magnitude of the observed period shift
and concomitant dissipation peak in several torsion oscillator experiments. The
implications of the glass model for solid He-4 are threefold: (1) The dynamics
of solid He-4 is governed by glassy relaxation processes. (2) The distribution
of relaxation times varies significantly between different torsion oscillator
experiments. (3) The mechanical response of a torsion oscillator does not
require a supersolid component to account for the observed anomaly at low
temperatures, though we cannot rule out its existence.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, presented at QFS200
Convention-independent study of CP-violating asymmetries in
CP-violating asymmetries in the decay are a
potentially rich source of information about both strong and weak phases. In a
previous treatment by the present authors use was made of an assumption about
the relative magnitude of tree and penguin amplitudes contributing to this
process. This assumption involved an ambiguity in relating the tree amplitude
to the amplitude for . It is shown here that one can avoid
this assumption, which adopted a particular convention for tree and penguin

Removing Discrete Ambiguities in CP Asymmetry Measurements
We discuss methods to resolve the ambiguities in CP violating phase angles
that are left when a measurement of is made. We show what
knowledge of hadronic quantities will be needed to fully resolve all such

Measurement of the B0-anti-B0-Oscillation Frequency with Inclusive Dilepton Events
The - oscillation frequency has been measured with a sample of
23 million \B\bar B pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II
asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we select events in which both B
mesons decay semileptonically and use the charge of the leptons to identify the
flavor of each B meson. A simultaneous fit to the decay time difference
