Experiencing higher education, transitions and the graduate labour market: the non-traditional student perspective: book of abstracts

In the last three courses 2014-15, 2015-15 and 2016-17, Integration of Contents and English has been implemented at the Faculty of Sciences of Education in University of Malaga (Spain), specifically in Primary Education Studies. The initiative corresponds to the continuity of bilingualism that in the Spanish Education Normative and Curriculum begins with Child schools, continuing in Secondary and High Schools. Consequently, Education Faculty is involved in the preparation of future professional teachers, who not only will be an interpreter teacher with a degree in languages, but with knowledge and content related to the different areas of learning and teaching. That is the reason why Social Sciences Education area is researching in using CLIL and sharing didactic strategies like poster seasons among classroom groups or Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) within different city Institutions as Malaga Museum Picasso, developing the need of being students and citizens part of the scaffolding learning in Higher Studies. Therefore, internationalizing territories in the University, city/town and its Museums will be a goal when talking about innovation for internationalizing employability and entrepreneurship.Universidad de Málaga. Were freak waves involved in the sinking of the Tanker “Prestige”?

This paper deals with the possible involvement of freak, rogue or giant waves in the damage suffered by the Tanker Prestige, which eventually led to its sinking. By reason of their very characteristics, giant waves are hard to record. Their more or less sudden appearance makes them fairly elusive objects, except for the consequences they produce. However, some hints with regard to the probability of their occurrence can be derived from considering how close the maritime weather of the area of interest is to the situation which is optimal for their generation. This paper takes into account the wave field in the area and at the time of the Prestige accident and investigates how near or how far the wave field was to the instability conditions that are favourable to the generation of freak waves in the different approximations. This paper explores mostly the modulation instability which is one of the most common mechanisms to produce freak waves: it leads to the decomposition of an initially homogeneous train of Stokes waves firstly into a series of groups of waves, whose envelope then produces the so-called “solitons”, that then collapse in the form of a giant wave. This mechanism mainly occurs in deep waters. Zakharov studied it in 1968 and, independently, Benjamin and Feir analysed it in 1967. This paper proves that the wave field was conspicuously two dimensional with two main wave components travelling in directions almost orthogonal to each other. This means that the wave field was well outside the instability domain. Therefore it is concluded that freak waves were very unlikely generated and it is improbable that they were responsible for the accident. Correspondence to: A. Firstly, it is useful to define what we understand as a freak wave. To this end we will take into account the descriptions appearing in the literature and the opinions shared by many researchers, such as Pelinovsky and Kharif (2000), Peregrine (1979), Osborne et al. The nonlinear and unsteady dynamics of the edge waves is discussed. Two physical processes: dispersive focusing and nonlinear modulational instability, are studied. Both mechanisms can induce the appearance of the short-living large-amplitude isolated waves and intense wave packets (“freak edge waves”)

Aspirin Use for Primary Prevention of Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease: Summarizing Current Evidence

Almost everyone has heard the saying, “One size does not fit all.” This adage is especially true in medicine. Treatment options vary depending on an individual’s risk. For this reason, risk calculators were created to help medical providers apply value to each risk and modify medical management accordingly. Preventative medical management also needs to be individualized. Aspirin is one of the most well-known preventative medications prescribed for the purpose of preventing cardiovascular events. It has become so well-known that patients have started taking it without recommendations from medical providers. An estimated 48.7 million US adults are currently taking aspirin as a preventative measure.1 Using aspirin for secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) has resulted in excellent benefits versus risks and was founded on good quality evidence. In contrast, recent trials for primary prevention have questioned the value of aspirin in individuals without CVD, specifically in patients with certain risk factors and comorbidities, such as diabetes mellitus type II

A Grunge Philosophy, Or: How I Came to Speak a Sub-Cultural Vocabulary Negating Social Binaries

Enter the cultural identity of Generation X in the form of the band Nirvana and their soon to be iconic front man in the appearance of the video for their single Smells Like Teen Spirit : The video is a typical live session by the band while they play to a gym of teenage kids. Throughout the video implements distort the scene, including smoke and moving lights, which shine directly into the camera at times, a good visual representation of the music: a structurally typical pop song that is played with the heavy distortion of metal and sung with the quiet verse and loud chorus of a Pixies song by a man who screams with the anger and angst of a punk rocker. At the beginning of the video a group of cheerleaders wearing black uniforms with a red anarchy symbol stitched across their chest perform robotic movements in an attempt to entertain extremely still and disengaged youth. Throughout, the video contains closer and closer shots of the band, smoke billowing in front of them, hair hanging in front of their faces, constant head banging and throwing of their bodies combine to distort the image, the antithesis of disengagement. Through the song the kids become more involved; they come out of their sleep and enter into this distorted reality with a sense of clarity. They begin moving to the music, slowly rising to their feet and crowd surfing. By the end of the song the crowd has moved to the floor of the gym intermingling with the band in a mosh pit. Slowly, while the song builds to its almost violent end, the cameras come closer as the crowd and the band become one in their seeming anguish and anxiety. The video ends with the camera moving rapidly between alternate shots of the youth and lead singer Kurt Cobain screaming in distress, A Denial
