    µG2-ELM: an upgraded implementation of µ G-ELM

    µG-ELM is a multiobjective evolutionary algorithm which looks for the best (in terms of the MSE) and most compact artificial neural network using the ELM methodology. In this work we present the µG2-ELM, an upgraded version of µG-ELM, previously presented by the authors. The upgrading is based on three key elements: a specifically designed approach for the initialization of the weights of the initial artificial neural networks, the introduction of a re-sowing process when selecting the population to be evolved and a change of the process used to modify the weights of the artificial neural networks. To test our proposal we consider several state-of-the-art Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) algorithms and we confront them using a wide and well-known set of continuous, regression and classification problems. From the conducted experiments it is proved that the µG2-ELM shows a better general performance than the previous version and also than other competitors. Therefore, we can guess that the combination of evolutionary algorithms with the ELM methodology is a promising subject of study since both together allow for the design of better training algorithms for artificial neural networks

    En este trabajo presentamos un estudio preliminar para adaptar el cuestionario Decision Making Questionaire II (DMQ-II) a la población española de árbitros deportivos, con el propósito de contar con un instrumento auxiliar que facilite el estudio de las diferencias individuales en la toma de decisiones. La muestra estaba compuesta por 131 árbitros de balonmano pertenecientes a las categorías de división de honor, primera división y categoría territorial. La estructura factorial de los datos, así como la consistencia interna del instrumento, confirman la existencia de distintos patrones de conducta ante situaciones de decisión en el contexto del arbitraje en el deporte del balonmano relacionados con: estrés en la toma de decisiones; decisión rápida con incertidumbre; y determinación y compromiso en la toma de decisiones.The present pilot study was carried out with a sample of 131 handball umpires of Spain, with the aim of adapting the Decision Making Questionnaire II (DMQ-II questionaire) and developing an instrument that may help to study individual differences in decision making. Three factors were extracted:stress management and decision making; quick decision making with uncertainty; and determination and commitment to decision making.     Submicronic Filtering Media Based on Electrospun Recycled PET Nanofibers: Development, Characterization, and Method to Manufacture Surgical Masks

    The disposal of single-use personal protective equipment has brought a notable environmental impact in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. During these last two years, part of the global research efforts has been focused on preventing contagion using nanotechnology. This work explores the production of filter materials with electrohydrodynamic techniques using recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET). PET was chosen because it is one of the materials most commonly present in everyday waste (such as in food packaging, bags, or bottles), being the most frequently used thermoplastic polymer in the world. The influence of the electrospinning parameters on the filtering capacity of the resulting fabric was analyzed against both aerosolized submicron particles and microparticulated matter. Finally, we present a new scalable and straightforward method for manufacturing surgical masks by electrospinning and we validate their performance by simulating the standard conditions to which they are subjected to during use. The masks were successfully reprocessed to ensure that the proposed method is able to reduce the environmental impact of disposable face masks. © 2022 by the authors.     Insectivorous bats are less active near freeways

    Traffic disturbances (i.e. pollution, light, noise, and vibrations) often extend into the area surrounding a road creating a 'road-effect zone'. Habitat within the road-effect zone is degraded or, in severe cases, completely unsuitable for wildlife, resulting in indirect habitat loss. This can have a disproportionate impact on wildlife in highly modified landscapes, where remaining habitat is scarce or occurs predominantly along roadside reserves. In this study, we investigated the road-effect zone for insectivorous bats in highly cleared agricultural landscapes by quantifying the change in call activity with proximity to three major freeways. The activity of seven out of 10 species of bat significantly decreased with proximity to the freeway. We defined the road-effect zone to be the proximity at which call activity declined by at least 20% relative to the maximum detected activity. The overall road-effect zone for bats in this region was 307 m, varying between 123 and 890 m for individual species. Given that this road-effect zone exceeds the typical width of the roadside verges (<50 m), it is possible that much of the vegetation adjacent to freeways in this and similar landscapes provides low-quality habitat for bats. Without accounting for the road-effect zone, the amount of habitat lost or degraded due to roads is underestimated, potentially resulting in the loss of wildlife, ecosystem services and key ecosystem processes (e.g. predator-prey or plant-pollinator interactions) from the landscape. We suggest all future environmental impact assessments include quantifying the road-effect zone for sensitive wildlife, in order to best plan and mitigate the impact of roads on the environment. Mitigating the effects of new and existing roads on wildlife is essential to ensure enough high-quality habitat persists to maintain wildlife populations

    Rhodium(I) complexes with hemilabile phosphines: Rational design for efficient oxidative amination catalysts

    13 páginas, 10 figuras, 6 tablas, 4 esquemas.A series of cationic square-planar rhodium(I) complexes of type [Rh(cod){Ar2P(CH2)nZ}]+, [Rh(cod){Ar2P(CH2)nZ}2]+, and [Rh{Ar2P(CH2)nZ}2]+, which contained diverse functionalized hemilabile phosphine ligands of type Ar2P(CH2)nZ (n=1–3; Z=OMe, OEt, OnBu, NMe2, SMe), were synthesized and spectroscopically characterized. The crystal structures of representative compounds were determined by X-ray diffraction. Most complexes were active catalysts for the anti-Markovnikov oxidative amination of styrene with piperidine to produce (E)-1-styrylpiperidine. Catalyst screening showed a remarkable relationship between the hemilabile ligand, the precatalyst structure, and the catalytic activity. The more-efficient catalysts were those that had arylphosphine ligands with a 2-alkoxyethyl- or 3-alkoxypropyl hemilabile moiety, Ar2P(CH2)nOR (n=2, 3; R=Me, Et, nBu). This study has revealed the outstanding catalytic activity of bis-phosphine complexes [Rh{(4-R-C6H4)2P(CH2)3OEt}2][PF6] (R=H, Me, OMe), with unprecedented turnover frequencies of up to 80 h−1 (R=Me) and excellent enamine selectivity (96 %).Financial support from the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICINN/FEDER): CTQ2010-15221, MULTICAT (CSD2009-00050), and Factoría de Cristalización (CSD2006-0015) is gratefully acknowledged.     Fabrication and microstructure of self-supporting thin ceramic electrolytes prepared by laser machining

    Self-supporting thin Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) ceramics electrolytes have been prepared by laser machining. They are carved from a sintered YSZ plate to shape a 20 µm thick and 8 mm in diameter central region, surrounded by an unprocessed 150 µm thick supporting zone. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Electron BackScattering Diffraction (EBSD) studies confirmed that the strains produced by the laser processing are small and limited to only one or two layers of YSZ grains (~5 µm). SEM and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) have been also used to characterize the surface of the membrane. It is corrugated and coated with YSZ nanoparticles as a result of the laser plasma deposition. Electrochemical characterization by Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) showed that this surface morphology improves the electrical performance of the membrane slightly but clearly, reducing the cathode polarization resistance by about 5% in the 650-850 ºC range.This study was funded by the MAT2012-30763 project, which is financed by the Spanish Government (Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad) and the Feder program of the European Union.Peer Reviewe

    A new surgical procedure for hallux limitus treatment: Double-V osteotomy on the base of the proximal phalanx of the hallux

    The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the new Double-V osteotomy of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (1 st MPJ) in patients with hallux limitus (HL). A study of 66 patients was performed, 33 patients were treated Cheilectomy and 33 were treated Double-V. All patients underwent an assessment of the passive mobility of the 1 st MPJ before the procedure, reevaluated 12 months later evaluating dorsiflexion, plantarflexion, and patients status using both the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) for Hallux Metatarsophalangeal-Interphalangeal Scale. In comparing the improvement achieved regarding the increase of mobility obtained with surgical treatment, the feet operated with procedure Double-V gained significant degrees of movement increased in all analyzed parameters (P<.05). We achieved 13.33° more than average in dorsiflexion motion and 2.12° more than average in plantarflexion with regard to the feet that were operated with Cheilectomy procedure. Double-V scores on the AOFAS scale improved significantly (P=.000) 91.48 points postoperative, while with the following Cheilectomy only 79.30 points. This new surgical technique, easy to perform and with low complexity in surgical execution and a minimum of complications, produces better clinical and functional results that Cheilectomy alone

    Gene Expression Profiling in Lungs of Chronic Asthmatic Mice Treated with Galectin-3: Downregulation of Inflammatory and Regulatory Genes

    Background. Asthma is a disorder characterized by a predominance of Th2 cells and eosinophilic inflammation. Suppressors of cytokine signaling (SOCS) proteins act as negative regulators of cytokine signaling. In particular, SOCS1 and SOCS3 play an important role in immune response by controlling the balance between Th1 and Th2 cells. In a previous study, we demonstrated that treatment of chronic asthmatic mice with gene therapy using plasmid encoding galectin-3 (Gal-3) led to an improvement in Th2 allergic inflammation. Methods. Using a microarray approach, this study endeavored to evaluate the changes produced by therapeutic Gal-3 delivered by gene therapy in a well-characterized mouse model of chronic airway inflammation. Results were confirmed by real-time RT-PCR, Western blot and immunohistochemical analysis. Results. We identify a set of genes involved in different pathways whose expression is coordinately decreased/increased in mice treated with Gal-3 gene therapy. We report a correlation between Gal-3 treatment and inhibition of SOCS1 and SOCS3 expression in lungs. Conclusion. These results suggest that negative regulation of SOCS1 and 3 following Gal-3 treatment could be a valuable therapeutic approach in allergic disease
