Electron excitation cross sections have been measured for the following two Rydberg series of H_2: ^1Σ_u^+ 1sσnpσ (B, B′, and B", states with principal quantum numbers n=2, 3, and 4, respectively) and ^1Π_u 1sσnpπ (C, D, and D′ states with principal quantum numbers n=2, 3, and 4, respectively) over the energy range from threshold to 350 eV. The cross sections for these six states account for all (>99%) of the vacuum-ultraviolet emission (78-170 nm) of the singlet states of H_2. The estimated total direct-excitation cross sections for these six states at 100 eV in decreasing value are (4.02±0.60)×10^(−17) cm^2 for B^1Σ_u^+ (3.86±0.60)×10^(−17) cm^2 for C^1Π_u, (0.76±0.11)×10^(−17) cm^2 for D^1Π_u, (0.76±0.11)×10^(−17) cm^2 for B' ^1Σ_u^+, (0.30±0.06)×10^(−17) cm^2 for D′^1Π_u, and (0.23±0.05)×10^(−17) cm^2 for B"^1Σ_u^+ and, additionally, (0.43±0.10)×10^(−17) cm^2 for E,F^1Σ_g^+ which populates the B^1Σ_u^+ state through radiative cascade transitions. We estimate the predissociation (autoionization is weak) and emission yields of the vibrational levels of the D, D′, and B" states whose band systems exhibit strong "breaking off in emission" for wavelengths below 85 nm. Furthermore, we report the first direct measurement of the dissociative excitation cross section for production of Lyman-β of (8.9±3.0)×10^(−19) cm^2 at 100 eV. In particular, it is shown that the high-lying Rydberg states (n=3 and 4) make a substantial contribution to the observed emission below 110 nm while above 110 nm the Lyman bands (B^1Σ_u^+→X^1Σ_g^+) and Werner bands (C^1Π_u→X^1Σ_g^+), the first members of the Rydberg series, dominate the spectrum. As a result of these measurements and spectroscopic models the ultraviolet (UV) spectrum from H_2 by electron impact can serve as an intensity calibration standard from 80 to 170 nm

The Effect of Splayed Pins on Vortex Creep and Critical Currents

We study the effects of splayed columnar pins on the vortex motion using realistic London Langevin simulations. At low currents vortex creep is strongly suppressed, whereas the critical current j_c is enhanced only moderately. Splaying the pins generates an increasing energy barrier against vortex hopping, and leads to the forced entanglement of vortices, both of which suppress creep efficiently. On the other hand splaying enhances kink nucleation and introduces intersecting pins, which cut off the energy barriers. Thus the j_c enhancement is strongly parameter sensitive. We also characterize the angle dependence of j_c, and the effect of different splaying geometries.Comment: 4 figure

Suicide Communication on Social Media and Its Psychological Mechanisms: An Examination of Chinese Microblog Users

    Get PDF
Background: This study aims to examine the characteristics of people who talk about suicide on Chinese microblogs (referred to as Weibo suicide communication (WSC)), and the psychological antecedents of such behaviors. Methods: An online survey was conducted on Weibo users. Differences in psychological and social demographic characteristics between those who exhibited WSC and those who did not were examined. Three theoretical models were proposed to explain the psychological mechanisms of WSC and their fitness was examined by Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Results: 12.03% of our respondents exhibited WSC in the past 12 months. The WSC group was significantly younger and less educated, preferred using blogs and online forums for expressing themselves, and reported significantly greater suicide ideation, negative affectivity, and vulnerable personality compared to non-WSC users. SEM examinations found that Weibo users with higher negative affectivity or/and suicidal ideation, who were also using blogs and forums more, exhibited a significantly higher possibility of WSC. Conclusion: Weibo users who are at greater suicide risk are more likely to talk about suicide on Weibo. WSC is a sign of negative affectivity or suicide ideation, and should be responded to with emotional support and suicide prevention services.published_or_final_versio

Current-voltage characteristic and stability in resonant-tunneling n-doped semiconductor superlattices

We review the occurrence of electric-field domains in doped superlattices within a discrete drift model. A complete analysis of the construction and stability of stationary field profiles having two domains is carried out. As a consequence, we can provide a simple analytical estimation for the doping density above which stable stable domains occur. This bound may be useful for the design of superlattices exhibiting self-sustained current oscillations. Furthermore we explain why stable domains occur in superlattices in contrast to the usual Gunn diode.Comment: Tex file and 3 postscript figure

NASA advanced design program: Analysis, design, and construction of a solar powered aircraft

    Get PDF
Increase in energy demands coupled with rapid depletion of natural energy resources have deemed solar energy as the most logical alternative source of power. The major objective of this project was to build a solar powered remotely controlled aircraft to demonstrate the feasibility of solar energy as an effective, alternate source of power. The final design was optimized for minimum weight and maximum strength of the structure. These design constraints necessitated a carbon fiber composite structure. Surya is a lightweight, durable aircraft capable of achieving level flight powered entirely by solar cells

Optically Thick Radio Cores of Narrow-Waist Bipolar Nebulae

We report our search for optically thick radio cores in sixteen narrow-waist bipolar nebulae. Optically thick cores are a characteristic signature of collimated ionized winds. Eleven northern nebulae were observed with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 1.3 cm and 0.7 cm, and five southern nebulae were observed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at 6 cm and 3.6 cm. Two northern objects, 19W32 and M 1-91, and three southern objects, He 2-25, He 2-84 and Mz 3, were found to exhibit a compact radio core with a rising spectrum consistent with an ionized jet. Such jets have been seen in M 2-9 and may be responsible for shaping bipolar structure in planetary nebulae.Comment: 29 pages, accepted for publication in Ap

Collapse of the vortex-lattice inductance and shear modulus at the melting transition in untwinned YBa2Cu3O7\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_7

The complex resistivity ρ^(ω)\hat{\rho}(\omega) of the vortex lattice in an untwinned crystal of 93-K YBa2Cu3O7\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_7 has been measured at frequencies ω/2π\omega/2\pi from 100 kHz to 20 MHz in a 2-Tesla field Hc\bf H\parallel c, using a 4-probe RF transmission technique that enables continuous measurements versus ω\omega and temperature TT. As TT is increased, the inductance Ls(ω)=Imρ^(ω)/ω{\cal L}_s(\omega) ={\rm Im} \hat{\rho}(\omega)/ \omega increases steeply to a cusp at the melting temperature TmT_m, and then undergoes a steep collapse consistent with vanishing of the shear modulus c66c_{66}. We discuss in detail the separation of the vortex-lattice inductance from the `volume' inductance, and other skin-depth effects. To analyze the spectra, we consider a weakly disordered lattice with a low pin density. Close fits are obtained to ρ1(ω)\rho_1(\omega) over 2 decades in ω\omega. Values of the pinning parameter κ\kappa and shear modulus c66c_{66} obtained show that c66c_{66} collapses by over 4 decades at TmT_m, whereas κ\kappa remains finite.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, Phys. Low-Temperatures Vortex Dynamics in Twinned Superconductors

    Get PDF
We discuss the low-temperature dynamics of magnetic flux lines in samples with a family of parallel twin planes. A current applied along the twin planes drives flux motion in the direction transverse to the planes and acts like an electric field applied to {\it one-dimensional} carriers in disordered semiconductors. As in flux arrays with columnar pins, there is a regime where the dynamics is dominated by superkink excitations that correspond to Mott variable range hopping (VRH) of carriers. In one dimension, however, rare events, such as large regions void of twin planes, can impede VRH and dominate transport in samples that are sufficiently long in the direction of flux motion. In short samples rare regions can be responsible for mesoscopic effects.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures email: [email protected]

    Chaos in resonant-tunneling superlattices

Spatio-temporal chaos is predicted to occur in n-doped semiconductor superlattices with sequential resonant tunneling as their main charge transport mechanism. Under dc voltage bias, undamped time-dependent oscillations of the current (due to the motion and recycling of electric field domain walls) have been observed in recent experiments. Chaos is the result of forcing this natural oscillation by means of an appropriate external microwave signal.Comment: 3 pages, LaTex, RevTex, 3 uuencoded figures (1.2M) are available upon request from [email protected], to appear in Phys.Rev.

Study of the risk-adjusted pricing methodology model with methods of Geometrical Analysis

Families of exact solutions are found to a nonlinear modification of the Black-Scholes equation. This risk-adjusted pricing methodology model (RAPM) incorporates both transaction costs and the risk from a volatile portfolio. Using the Lie group analysis we obtain the Lie algebra admitted by the RAPM equation. It gives us the possibility to describe an optimal system of subalgebras and correspondingly the set of invariant solutions to the model. In this way we can describe the complete set of possible reductions of the nonlinear RAPM model. Reductions are given in the form of different second order ordinary differential equations. In all cases we provide solutions to these equations in an exact or parametric form. We discuss the properties of these reductions and the corresponding invariant solutions.Comment: larger version with exact solutions, corrected typos, 13 pages, Symposium on Optimal Stopping in Abo/Turku 200
