    Catholicism and Organizational Development: A Case Study on the Communication of Catholic Mission and Identity

    Don Martin, Kendra Knight, and Scott Kelley explore the results of the Catholic Identity Mission Assessment survey as it relates to DePaul University. This survey was created by the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities as a way of gauging how effectively Catholic educational institutions are conveying their Catholic identity to their students and other stakeholders. At DePaul, the investigation examined how well graduating seniors “comprehend and articulate principles from the Catholic intellectual tradition and Catholic social teaching.” Martin, Knight, and Kelley cite specific curricular and cocurricular areas that would help seniors establish this Catholic worldview and point out areas in which the communication of Catholic identity needs to be bolstered. They also explore the challenges of communicating that identity, not least of which is the generational interest and existing generational worldview of millennials and Generation Z and the need to compete with secular educational institutions. The authors explain the survey’s method and results. The survey found that “students’ confidence in their ability to articulate dimensions of the Vincentian mission is greater than their confidence in their ability to communicate dimensions of the Catholic intellectual tradition,” which “suggests a need for organizational development.” The article outlines steps for that

    A Distribution of Large Particles in the Coma of Comet 103P/Hartley 2

    The coma of comet 103P/Hartley 2 has a significant population of large particles observed as point sources in images taken by the Deep Impact spacecraft. We measure their spatial and flux distributions, and attempt to constrain their composition. The flux distribution of these particles implies a very steep size distribution with power-law slopes ranging from -6.6 to -4.7. The radii of the particles extend up to 20 cm, and perhaps up to 2 m, but their exact sizes depend on their unknown light scattering properties. We consider two cases: bright icy material, and dark dusty material. The icy case better describes the particles if water sublimation from the particles causes a significant rocket force, which we propose as the best method to account for the observed spatial distribution. Solar radiation is a plausible alternative, but only if the particles are very low density aggregates. If we treat the particles as mini-nuclei, we estimate they account for <16-80% of the comet's total water production rate (within 20.6 km). Dark dusty particles, however, are not favored based on mass arguments. The water production rate from bright icy particles is constrained with an upper limit of 0.1 to 0.5% of the total water production rate of the comet. If indeed icy with a high albedo, these particles do not appear to account for the comet's large water production rate. production rate.     High Resolution X-Ray Micro-CT of Ultra-Thin Wall Space Components

    A high resolution micro-CT system has been assembled and is being used to provide optimal characterization for ultra-thin wall space components. The Glenn Research Center NDE Sciences Team, using this CT system, has assumed the role of inspection vendor for the Advanced Stirling Convertor (ASC) project at NASA. This article will discuss many aspects of the development of the CT scanning for this type of component, including CT system overview; inspection requirements; process development, software utilized and developed to visualize, process, and analyze results; calibration sample development; results on actual samples; correlation with optical/SEM characterization; CT modeling; and development of automatic flaw recognition software.     Interactions of APE1 with a redox inhibitor: Evidence for an alternate conformation of the enzyme

    Apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease (APE1) is an essential base excision repair protein that also functions as a reduction and oxidation (redox) factor in mammals. Through a thiol-based mechanism, APE1 reduces a number of important transcription factors, including AP-1, p53, NF-ÎșB, and HIF-1α. What is known about the mechanism to date is that the buried residues Cys 65 and Cys 93 are critical for APE1’s redox activity. To further detail the redox mechanism, we developed a chemical footprinting−mass spectrometric assay using N-ethylmaleimide (NEM), an irreversible Cys modifier, to characterize the interaction of the redox inhibitor, E3330, with APE1. When APE1 was incubated with E3330, two NEM-modified products were observed, one with two and a second with seven added NEMs; this latter product corresponds to a fully modified APE1. In a similar control reaction without E3330, only the +2NEM product was observed in which the two solvent-accessible Cys residues, C99 and C138, were modified by NEM. Through hydrogen−deuterium amide exchange with analysis by mass spectrometry, we found that the +7NEM-modified species incorporates approximately 40 more deuterium atoms than the native protein, which exchanges nearly identically as the +2NEM product, suggesting that APE1 can be trapped in a partially unfolded state. E3330 was also found to increase the extent of disulfide bond formation involving redox critical Cys residues in APE1 as assessed by liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry, suggesting a basis for its inhibitory effects on APE1’s redox activity. Collectively, our results suggest that APE1 adopts a partially unfolded state, which we propose is the redox active form of the enzyme

    Victim, perpetrator, family, and incident characteristics of infant and child homicide in the United States Air Force

    Objective: The present study describes factors related to fatal abuse in three age groups in the United States Air Force (USAF). Method: Records from 32 substantiated cases of fatal child abuse in the USAF were independently reviewed for 60 predefined factors. Results: Males were over-represented in young child victims (between 1 year and 4 years of age) and child victims (between 4 years and 15 years of age) but not in infant victims (between 24 hours and 1 year of age). African-American infant victims and perpetrators were over-represented. Younger victims were more likely to have been previously physically abused by the perpetrator. Perpetrators were predominantly male and the biological fathers of the victims. Infant and young child perpetrators reported childhood abuse histories, while child perpetrators reported the highest frequency of mental health contact. Victims’ families reported significant life stressors. Families of young child victims were more likely divorced, separated, or single. Incidents with infants and young children tended to occur without witnesses; incidents with child victims tended to have the victim’s sibling(s) and/or mother present. Fatal incidents were more frequent on the weekend, in the home, and initiated by some family disturbance. Conclusions: Differences among groups in factors related to infant and child homicide across age groups may assist in the development of more tailored abuse prevention efforts and may also guide future investigations
