Biological availability of different commercially available histidine products in feed for Atlantic salmon smolt

    Get PDF
Postponed access: the file will be accessible after 2022-06-01A comparative nutritional study with post-smolt Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) was performed over six weeks to investigate similarities between three suppliers of synthetic His at two dietary levels in a formulated extruded pellet for salmon, and how they affected feed utilization, fish performance, cataract development, digestibility, and biological efficacy. His source or dietary level of His did not affect feed utilization. Digestibility was similar between all experimental groups and the control group. No difference were found in organ indexes for His source, but the dietary level of His showed reduced growth in organ indexes for high supplementation level versus medium and control. Differences existed between experimental groups and the control group for fish performance, but these were assumed to be non-related to nutrition due to their inconsistency. His supplementation reduced cataract severity, while no difference was found between His sources. Tissue levels of His, anserine and NAH concentrations were similar between His sources.Masteroppgave i fiskehelseFISK399MAMN-FIS

An Efficient Representation of General Qualitative Spatial Information Using Bintrees

    Get PDF
In this paper we extend previous work on using bintrees as an efficient representation for qualitative information about spatial objects. Our approach represents each spatial object as a bintree satisfying the exact same qualitative relationships to other bintree representations as the corresponding spatial objects. We prove that such correct bintrees always exists and that they can be constructed as a sum of local representations, allowing a practically efficient construction. Our representation is both efficient, w.r.t. storage space and query time, and can represent many well-known qualitative relations, such as the relations in the Region Connection Calculus and Allen\u27s Interval Algebra

Abductive reasoning in nursing: Challenges and possibilities

    Get PDF
Abduction, deduction and induction are different forms of inference in science. However, only a few attempts have been made to introduce the idea of abductive reasoning as an extended way of thinking about clinical practice in nursing research. The aim of this paper was to encourage critical reflections about abductive reasoning based on three empirical examples from nursing research and includes three research questions on what abductive reasoning is, how the process has taken place, and how knowledge about abductive reasoning based on the examples can inform nursing research and clinical practice. The study has a descriptive and explorative approach using a convenience sample of three empirical studies from nursing research. The three studies illustrate different ways to enter the abductive reasoning process in steps. They represent new caring models, which offer visual and cognitive maps for expanding nursing research, education and thus informing care. Therefore, we suggest that abductive reasoning may be beneficial for different ways of knowing and demonstrates scientific innovation to shed new light on health phenomena, which can help researchers and practitioners to gain a broader and deeper understanding of nursing care inquiry. However, more studies are needed to broaden this scope.publishedVersio

Common mental disorders and ethnicity in England : the EMPIRIC Study

    Get PDF
Background. There is little population-based evidence on ethnic variation in the most common mental disorders (CMD), anxiety and depression. We compared the prevalence of CMD among representative samples of White, Irish, Black Caribbean, Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani individuals living in England using a standardized clinical interview. Method. Cross-sectional survey of 4281 adults aged 16–74 years living in private households in England. CMD were assessed using the Revised Clinical Interview Schedule (CIS-R), a standardized clinical interview. Results. Ethnic differences in the prevalence of CMD were modest, and some variation with age and sex was noted. Compared to White counterparts, the prevalence of CMD was higher to a statistically significant degree among Irish [adjusted rate ratios (RR) 2.09, 95% CI 1.16–2.95, p=0.02] and Pakistani (adjusted RR 2.38, 95% CI 1.25–3.53, p=0.02) men aged 35–54 years, even after adjusting for differences in socio-economic status. Higher rates of CMD were also observed among Indian and Pakistani women aged 55–74 years, compared to White women of similar age. The prevalence of CMD among Bangladeshi women was lower than among White women, although this was restricted to those not interviewed in English. There were no differences in rates between Black Caribbean and White samples. Conclusions. Middle-aged Irish and Pakistani men, and older Indian and Pakistani women, had significantly higher rates of CMD than their White counterparts. The very low prevalence of CMD among Bangladeshi women contrasted with high levels of socio-economic deprivation among this group. Further study is needed to explore reasons for this variation
