    Antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 in follicular fluids and their association with assisted reproduction

    Introduction: Every second woman suffering from infertility asks for medical help. There is public concern that vaccination-induced antibodies (Ab) are negatively associated with fertility. A recent study has demonstrated an association between SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and a lower pregnancy rate in the subsequent 60 days. Consequently, Ab could affect fertility success in assisted reproduction. Methods: To address this question, we compared fertilization outcomes of vaccinated (n=35) and nonvaccinated (n=34) women. Paired serum samples and multiple follicular fluids (FF) (up to 10 from the same donor) were collected during the course of assisted reproduction and characterized for oocyte quality, the presence of Ab and trace element concentrations. Results: The results showed a positive correlation of vaccination-induced neutralizing activity of SARS-CoV-2-Ab in serum and FF. On average, Ab concentrations in serum were higher than in the corresponding FF. However, wide variations in SARS-CoV-2 Ab titers were observed between different FF, correlating to trace element levels, even when retrieved from the same donor. Discussion: Overall, FF contents are highly variable, but no negative association was observed between Ab in serum or FF and fertilization success and oocyte development, supporting the safety of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination during assisted reproduction

    Economic analysis of different applications of composts obtained from solid wastes of rose oil processing in organic apple nursery tree growing

    In this study, it was aimed to carry out an economic analysis of different applications of composts obtained from solid wastes of rose oil processing (RC) applications in organic apple nursery growing. The data used in the study were obtained from the experiments carried out in the Directorate of Fruit Research Institute of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock. According to the results of the research, it was determined that the lowest cultivation cost per apple nursery tree was determined for ERC (50%) (Half dosage of the enriched RC) application and the highest one was for ST (standard application: 50% commercial solid organic manure +50% commercial liquid manure). The cultivation cost per nursery tree was determined as 2.64TL for ERC (50%) application and 3.04 TL for ST application. When a comparison was made in terms of net profit, it was determined that the most advantageous application was RC and ERC (100%). Furthermore, the net profit for the RC and ERC (100%) applications was 7333.9 TL and 7317.9 TL, respectively, and the net profits per nursery tree was 1.87 TL, respectively. In the control application (No nutrient application), net profit per decare was 5434 TL and net profit per nursery tree was 1.64 TL (1 USD=3.02 TL in 2016, average)

    Prediagnostic selenium status, selenoprotein gene variants and association with breast cancer risk in a european cohort study

    Selenium (Se) may help prevent breast cancer (BC) development. Owing to limited observational evidence, we investigated whether prediagnostic Se status and/or variants in the selenoprotein genes are associated with BC risk in a large European cohort. Se status was assessed by plasma measures of Se and its major circulating proteins, selenoprotein P (SELENOP) and glutathione peroxidase 3 (GPX3), in matched BC case-control pairs (2208 for SELENOP; 1785 for GPX3 and Se) nested within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs, n = 452) in 55 selenoprotein and Se metabolic pathway genes and an additional 18 variants previously associated with Se concentrations were extracted from existing genotyping data within EPIC for 1564 case-control pairs. Multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models were used to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) of the association between Se status markers, SNP variants and BC risk. Overall, there was no statistically significant association of Se status with BC risk. However, higher GPX3 activity was associated with lower risk of premenopausal BC (4th versus 1st quartile, OR = 0.54, 95 % CI: 0.30-0.98, Ptrend = 0.013). While none of the genetic variant associations (P ≀ 0.05) retained significance after multiple testing correction, rs1004243 in the SELENOM selenoprotein gene and two SNPs in the related antioxidant TXN2 gene (rs4821494 and rs5750261) were associated with respective lower and higher risks of BC at a significance threshold of P ≀ 0.01. Fourteen SNPs in twelve Se pathway genes (P ≀ 0.01) in interaction with Se status were also associated with BC risk. Higher Se status does not appear to be associated with BC risk, although activity of the selenoenzyme GPX3 may be inversely associated with premenopausal BC risk, and SNPs in the Se pathway alone or in combination with suboptimal Se status may influence BC risk.</p

    COMPARISON OF COST AND PROFITABILITY OF ORGANIC AND CONVENTIONAL STRAWBERRY SEEDLING GROWING MEDIA

    WOS: 000407960800014In this study, it was aimed to compare organic and conventional strawberry seedling cultivation media in terms of cost and profitability. This study was carried out in the Apricot Research Institute in Malatya province, Turkey. Albion and Sweet Charlie varieties were used in the experiment. The production costs of Albion and Sweet Charlie strawberry varieties were calculated in different growing media. Calculation of the production costs of the fresh plug strawberry seedlings was done in two steps. First, the production costs of strawberry runner plants were calculated, then the production costs of fresh plug strawberry seedlings were found. According to the results of the research, the cost of a runner plant was found to be the highest for the Albian Biodecal application, while the lowest was detected for Sweet Charlie Control application. According to different applications, the cost of strawberry branch plant was determined as 0.376, 0.341, 0.273, and 0.235 TL/unit for Albian Biodecal, Albian Control, Sweet Charlie Biodecal and Sweet Charlie Control applications, respectively(1 USD=3.02 TL in 2016, average). When the production costs of Albion and Sweet Charlie strawberry seedling obtained from Biodecal application were compared with the sale price, it can be said that production cost was lower than sale price for all the organic growing media (except for IT (Imported Turf) growing medium for Albion strawberry seedling obtained from Biodecal application), but in the conventional growing media, production costs was found to be higher than the sale price. Similar results have been found for the strawberry seedlings obtained from the control application. When organic applications were compared with each other, it was determined that KP (1:1 ratio local turf: perlite) was the growing medium which had the lowest production cost for Albion strawberry seedling obtained from Biodecal application, OE (1:1 ratio local turf: perlite + ecoflora providing 50 mg kg(-1) potassium) for Sweet Charlie strawberry seedling obtained from Biodecal application, KP for Albion strawberry seedling obtained from control application and OE for Sweet Charlie strawberry seedling obtained from control application

    Zinc and Breast Cancer Survival: A Prospective Cohort Study of Dietary Intake and Serum Levels

    Zinc has been suggested to play a role in breast cancer progression; however, no previous study on zinc levels and the potential effect on breast cancer survival has been conducted. This study investigates recurrence-free survival (RFS), breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS) and overall survival (OS) in relation to zinc levels, in serum and diet, overall and stratified for phosphorus and selenium levels. The Malmö Diet and Cancer Study, a prospective population-based cohort in Sweden including 17,035 women, was used to identify breast cancer patients diagnosed in the period 1991–2013. Diet was assessed by a validated modified diet history method. A Cox regression analysis yielded hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals adjusted for potential confounders. Out of 1062 patients with invasive breast cancer, 268 recurrences, 205 breast cancer deaths and 228 deaths from other causes were recorded. No overall associations were seen between zinc and RFS, BCSS or OS. However, in women with a high phosphorus intake, a higher BCSS and OS were seen in zinc intake Q2 to Q4 versus Q1; the adjusted HR was 0.41 (0.23–0.73) and 0.64 (0.41–1.00), respectively. The results indicate that the combination of intermediate/high zinc intake and high phosphorus intake may lead to a better breast cancer survival

    Background: Selenium is essential for expression and proper function of a set of redox active selenoproteins implicated in aging-relevant diseases, e.g. type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) and hypertension. However, data in cohorts of older adults, particularly with respect to different Se biomarkers and sex-specific analyses are sparse. Objective: To assess associations of serum Se and selenoprotein P (SELENOP) concentrations with T2D and hypertension in a cohort of older females and males. Methods: This study included 1500 participants from the Berlin Aging Study II. Diagnosis of T2D was made in case of antidiabetic medication, self-reported T2D, or laboratory parameters. Diagnosis of hypertension was based on self-report, blood pressure measurement, or anti-hypertensive medication. Se was measured by spectroscopy, and SELENOP by ELISA. Multiple adjusted regression models quantified dose-dependent associations. Results: Participants had a median(IQR) age of 68 (65,71) years, and 767 (51%) were women. 191 (13%) participants had T2D and 1126 (75%) had hypertension. Se and SELENOP correlated significantly (r = 0.59, p < 0.001), and were elevated in those with self-reported Se supplementation. Serum Se and SELENOP were not associated with T2D in the whole cohort. In men, SELENOP was positively associated with T2D, OR (95%CI) for one mg/L increase in SELENOP was 1.22 (1.00,1.48). Se was non-linearly associated with hypertension, comparing to the lowest quartile (Q1), and participants with higher Se levels (Q3) had a lower OR (95%CI) of 0.66 (0.45,0.96), which was specific for men. SELENOP positively associated with hypertension, and OR (95%CI) per one mg/L increase was 1.15 (1.01,1.32). Conclusions: The data suggest a sex-specific interrelationship of Se status with T2D and hypertension, with apparent biomarker-specific associations

    Serum copper, zinc and copper/zinc ratio in relation to survival after breast cancer diagnosis: A prospective multicenter cohort study

    Background: The essential trace elements copper and zinc, and their ratio (copper/zinc), are important for maintaining redox homeostasis. Previous studies suggest that these elements may impact breast cancer survival. However, no epidemiological study has so far been conducted on the potential association between copper and copper/zinc levels and survival after breast cancer diagnosis. In this study, we aimed to examine the relationship between serum copper, zinc and copper/zinc levels and survival following breast cancer diagnosis. Patients and methods: The Sweden Cancerome Analysis Network – Breast Initiative (SCAN-B) is a population-based cohort study including multiple participating hospitals in Sweden. A total of 1998 patients diagnosed with primary invasive breast cancer were followed for approximately nine years. Serum levels of copper and zinc and their ratio at the time of diagnosis was analyzed in relation to breast cancer survival using multivariate Cox regression, yielding hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals. Results: A higher copper/zinc ratio was associated with lower overall survival after breast cancer diagnosis. Comparing patients with a copper/zinc ratio in quartile 4 vs 1, the crude HR was 2.29 (1.65–3.19) (Ptrend <0.01) and the fully adjusted HR was 1.58 (1.11–2.25) (Ptrend = 0.01). No overall associations were seen between serum copper or zinc levels on their own and survival after breast cancer diagnosis, although a tendency toward lower breast cancer survival was seen for higher copper levels and lower zinc levels. Conclusion: There is evidence that the serum copper/zinc ratio provides an independent predictive value for overall survival following breast cancer diagnosis

    The trace element selenium is of essential importance for the synthesis of a set of redox active proteins. We investigated three complementary serum selenium status biomarkers in relation to overall survival and recurrence following diagnosis of primary invasive breast cancer in a large prospective cohort study. The Sweden Cancerome Analysis Network – Breast Initiative (SCAN-B) is a prospective population-based study including multiple participating hospitals. Main analyses included 1996 patients with a new diagnosis of primary invasive breast cancer, with blood sampling at the time of diagnosis. In sera of the patients, total serum selenium, selenoprotein P (SELENOP), and glutathione peroxidase 3 (GPx3) activity was analysed. All three biomarkers showed a positive correlation (p < 0.001), supporting the high quality of samples and analytical techniques. During a total of 13,306 person years of follow-up, 310 deaths and 167 recurrent breast cancer events occurred. In fully adjusted Cox models, all three biomarkers correlated inversely with mortality (p trend <0.001) and compared with the lowest quintile, hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) for overall survival in the highest quintile of selenium, SELENOP and GPx3 were 0.42 (0.28–0.63), 0.51 (0.36–0.73) and 0.52 (0.36–0.75), respectively. Low GPx3 activity was associated with more recurrences (Q5 vs Q1: fully adjusted HR (95%CI); 0.57 (0.35–0.92), (p trend = 0.005). Patients with low selenium status according to all three biomarkers (triple deficient) had the highest mortality risk with an overall survival probability of ∌50% after 8 years, in particular as compared to those having at least one marker in the highest quintile; fully adjusted HR (95%CI); 0.30 (0.21–0.43). Prediction of mortality based on all three biomarkers outperformed established tumour characteristics like histologic grade, number of involved lymph nodes or tumour size.     Autoimmunity to selenoprotein P predicts breast cancer recurrence

    BackgroundLow concentrations of serum selenium (Se) and its main transporter selenoprotein P (SELENOP) are associated with a poor prognosis following breast cancer diagnosis. Recently, natural autoantibodies (aAb) with antagonistic properties to SELENOP uptake have been identified in healthy subjects, and in patients with thyroid disease. Given the potential transport disrupting properties, we hypothesized that breast cancer patients with SELENOP-aAb may have a poor prognosis.MethodsSELENOP-aAb along with serum Se, SELENOP and GPX3 activity were determined in serum samples of 1988 patients with a new diagnosis of breast cancer enrolled in the multicentre SCAN-B study. Patients were followed for ∌9 years and multivariate Cox regression models were applied to assess hazard ratios.ResultsApplying a cut-off based on outlier detection, we identified 7.65% of patients with SELENOP-aAb. Autoantibody titres correlated positively to total Se and SELENOP concentrations, but not to GPX3 activity, supporting a negative role of SELENOP-aAb on Se transport. SELENOP-aAb were associated with age, but independent of tumor characteristics. After fully adjusting for potential confounders, SELENOP-aAb were associated with higher recurrence, HR(95%CI) = 1.87(1.17–2.99), particularly in patients with low Se concentrations, HR(95%CI) = 2.16(1.20–3.88). Associations of SELENOP-aAb with recurrence and mortality were linear and dose-dependent, with fully adjusted HR(95%CI) per log increase of 1.25(1.01–1.55) and 1.31(1.13–1.51), respectively.ConclusionOur results indicate a prognostic and pathophysiological relevance of SELENOP-aAb in breast cancer, with potential relevance for other malignancies. Assessment of SELENOP-aAb at time of diagnosis identifies patients with a distinctly elevated risk for a poor prognosis, independent of established prognostic factors, who may respond favourably to Se supplementation
