    Modular 3D Interface Design for Accessible VR Applications

    Designed with an accessible first design approach, the presented paper describes how exploiting humans proprioception ability in 3D space can result in a more natural interaction experience when using a 3D graphical user interface in a virtual environment. The modularity of the designed interface empowers the user to decide where they want to place interface elements in 3D space allowing for a highly customizable experience, both in the context of the player and the virtual space. Drawing inspiration from todays tangible interfaces used, such as those in aircraft cockpits, a modular interface is presented taking advantage of our natural understanding of interacting with 3D objects and exploiting capabilities that otherwise have not been used in 2D interaction. Additionally, the designed interface supports multimodal input mechanisms which also demonstrates the opportunity for the design to cross over to augmented reality applications.     Abstract in Chinese: 经济伦理学研究的重点在于用伦理规范积极地调节生产活动,从而在要求生产活动不能违背道德的同时帮助提高生产效率。生产伦理问题是经济伦理的基本问题之一。生产活动过程始终伴随着伦理规范过程。而为什么生产?如何生产?则是生产伦理基本问题所涉及的两个方面。生产伦理对于生产活动的调节以伦理学对于生产的总体评价为基础,其包括抽象生产和具体生产两个层面。生产伦理的调节就是通过对于具体生产的伦理调节,力图使具体生产以提高效率的方式服务于人类的美好生活。它包括宏观生产的伦理调节和微观生产的伦理调节。本文分析了两种生产伦理调节面临的主要问题,并就如何调节进行了探讨,提出了一些初步的意见。Abstract in English: the focus of economic ethics research is to actively regulate the production activities with ethical standards, so as to require the pro-duction activities can not go against the moral and help improve produc-tion efficiency. Production ethics is one of the basic problems of eco-nomic ethics. The process of production activity is always accompanied by the process of ethics. And why production? How to produce? It is the two aspects of the basic problem of production ethics. Production ethics for the production activities of the regulation to the production of the overall evaluation of the basis of the evaluation, which includes two levels of abstract production and specific production. The regulation of production ethics is to improve the efficiency of the production in order to improve the efficiency of the good life. It includes the ethical regula-tion of the macro production and the regulation of the micro production. This paper analyzes the main problems of two kinds of production ethics regulation, and puts forward some preliminary suggestions on how to adjust the regulation of the production. [pp.369-370

    An Artificial Intelligence Tool for Accessible Science Education

    One of the most important issues in accessible science education is creating a laboratory workspace accessible to blind students or students with visual impairments (VI). Although these students are often provided access to the science lectures, they are usually denied full participation in hands-on laboratory work. Current solutions to this problem focus on providing special accommodations such as asking sighted lab partners to complete the hands-on work. Although the accessibility of laboratory devices in modern science education has been improved in recent years, students with VI often remain passive learners. In this work, we developed a new artificial intelligence tool, the MSU Denver Virtual Lab Assistant (VLA), using Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon Alexa Skills Kit (ASK), Alexa smart speaker, and a microcontroller (Raspberry Pi). The VLA can be used as a virtual assistant in the lab in combination with other access technologies and devices. The VLA allows students with VI to perform the hands-on laboratory work by themselves simply using voice control. The VLA can be accessed through any smartphone or Amazon Echo device to assist general science lab procedures. The VLA is designed to be applicable to different science laboratory work. It is also compatible with other common accessible electronic devices such as the Talking LabQuest (TLQ). We believe that the VLA can promote the inclusion of learners with VI and be beneficial to general accessible science education work

    Assessing photochemical ozone formation in the Pearl River Delta with a photochemical trajectory model

    A photochemical trajectory model (PTM), coupled with the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM) describing the degradation of 139 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the troposphere, was developed and used for the first time to simulate the formation of photochemical pollutants at Wangqingsha (WQS), Guangzhou during photochemical pollution episodes between 12 and 17 November, 2007. The simulated diurnal variations and mixing ratios of ozone were in good agreement with observed data (R2=0.80, P<0.05), indicating that the photochemical trajectory model - an integration of boundary layer trajectories, precursor emissions and chemical processing - provides a reasonable description of ozone formation in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region. Calculated photochemical ozone creation potential (POCP) indices for the region indicated that alkanes and oxygenated organic compounds had relatively low reactivity, while alkenes and aromatics presented high reactivity, as seen in other airsheds in Europe. Analysis of the emission inventory found that the sum of 60 of the 139 VOC species accounted for 92% of the total POCP-weighted emission. The 60 VOC species include C2-C6 alkenes, C6-C8 aromatics, biogenic VOCs, and so on. The results indicated that regional scale ozone formation in the PRD region can be mainly attributed to a relatively small number of VOC species, namely isoprene, ethene, m-xylene, and toluene, etc. A further investigation of the relative contribution of the main emission source categories to ozone formation suggested that mobile sources were the largest contributor to regional O3 formation (40%), followed by biogenic sources (29%), VOC product-related sources (23%), industry (6%), biomass burning (1%), and power plants (1%). The findings obtained in this study would advance our knowledge of air quality in the PRD region, and provide useful information to local government on effective control of photochemical smog in the region. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd

    Enhancing Security and Energy Efficiency in Wireless Sensor Network Routing with IOT Challenges: A Thorough Review

    Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have emerged as a crucial component in the field of networking due to their cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and compact size, making them invaluable for various applications. However, as the reliance on WSN-dependent applications continues to grow, these networks grapple with inherent limitations such as memory and computational constraints. Therefore, effective solutions require immediate attention, especially in the age of the Internet of Things (IoT), which largely relies on the effectiveness of WSNs. This study undertakes a comprehensive review of research conducted between 2018 and 2020, categorizing it into six main domains: 1) Providing an overview of WSN applications, management, and security considerations. 2) Focusing on routing and energy-saving techniques. 3) Reviewing the development of methods for information gathering, emphasizing data integrity and privacy. 4) Emphasizing connectivity and positioning techniques. 5) Examining studies that explore the integration of IoT technology into WSNs with an eye on secure data transmission. 6) Highlighting research efforts aimed at energy efficiency. The study addresses the motivation behind employing WSN applications in IoT technologies, as well as the challenges, obstructions, and solutions related to their application and development. It underscores that energy consumption remains a paramount issue in WSNs, with untapped potential for improving energy efficiency while ensuring robust security. Furthermore, it identifies existing approaches' weaknesses, rendering them inadequate for achieving energy-efficient routing in secure WSNs. This review sheds light on the critical challenges and opportunities in the field, contributing to a deeper understanding of WSNs and their role in secure IoT applications

    What determine firms’ capital structure in China?

    Purpose – This paper investigates the determinants of capital structure using a cross-section sample of 1481 non-financial firms listed on the Chinese stock exchanges in 2011. Design/methodology/approach – Employing four leverage measures (total leverage and long-term leverage in terms of both book value and market value, respectively), this study examines the effects of factors with proven influences on capital structure in literature, along with industry effect and ownership effect. Findings – We find that large firms favour debt financing while profitable firms rely more on internal capital accumulation. Intangibility and business risk increase the level of debt financing but tax has little impact on capital structure. We also observe strong industrial effect and ownership effect. Real estate firms borrow considerably more and firms from utility and manufacturing industries use more long-term debt despite compared with commercial firms. On the other hand, firms with state ownership tend to borrow more, while firms with foreign ownership choose more equity financing. Research limitations – The study uses cross-section data to avoid any potential time effects, which allows us to focus on our main research question – to identify the determinants of capital structure for Chinese firms. Future research may gain more insights using panel data and considering other factors such as crisis and financial reforms. Practical implications – These results may provide important implications to investors in making investment decision and to firms in making financing decisions. Originality/value – this paper uses by far the largest and latest cross-section sample from the Chinese stock markets, offering a more complete picture of the financing behaviours in the Chinese firms, with known characters and the impact of ownerships
