    Formation of a quasicrystalline Pb monolayer on the ten-fold surface of the decagonal Al-Ni-Co quasicrystal

    Lead has been deposited on the ten-fold surface of decagonal Al72Ni11Co17 to form an epitaxial quasicrystalline single-element monolayer. The overlayer grows through nucleation of nanometer-sized irregular islands and the coverage saturates at 1 ML. The overlayer is well-ordered quasiperiodically as evidenced by LEED and Fourier transforms of STM images. Annealing the film to 600 K improves the structural quality, but causes the evaporation of some material such that the film develops pores. Electronic structure measurements using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy indicate that the chemical interaction of the Pb atoms with the substrate is weak.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure

    Flight test evaluation of a separate surface attitude command control system on a Beech 99 airplane

    A joint NASA/university/industry program was conducted to flight evaluate a potentially low cost separate surface implementation of attitude command in a Beech 99 airplane. Saturation of the separate surfaces was the primary cause of many problems during development. Six experienced professional pilots who made simulated instrument flight evaluations experienced improvements in airplane handling qualities in the presence of turbulence and a reduction in pilot workload. For ride quality, quantitative data show that the attitude command control system results in all cases of airplane motion being removed from the uncomfortable ride region

    Cardiovascular disease biomarkers are associated with declining renal function in type 2 diabetes

    Aims/hypothesis: We investigated whether biochemical cardiovascular risk factors and/or markers of subclinical cardiovascular disease were associated with the development of reduced renal function in people with type 2 diabetes. Methods: A cohort of 1066 Scottish men and women aged 60–74 years with type 2 diabetes from the Edinburgh Type 2 Diabetes Study were followed up for a median of 6.7 years. New-onset reduced renal function was defined as two eGFRs <60 ml−1 min−1 (1.73 m)−2 at least 3 months apart with a > 25% decline from baseline eGFR. Ankle brachial pressure index (ABI), N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and high-sensitivity troponin T (hsTnT) were measured at baseline. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) and carotid intima media thickness were measured 1 year into follow-up. Data were analysed using Cox proportional hazards models. Results: A total of 119 participants developed reduced renal function during follow-up. ABI, PWV, NT-proBNP and hsTnT were all associated with onset of decline in renal function following adjustment for age and sex. These associations were attenuated after adjustment for additional diabetes renal disease risk factors (systolic BP, baseline eGFR, albumin:creatinine ratio and smoking pack-years), with the exception of hsTnT which remained independently associated (HR 1.51 [95% CI 1.22, 1.87]). Inclusion of hsTnT in a predictive model improved the continuous net reclassification index by 0.165 (0.008, 0.286). Conclusions/interpretation: Our findings demonstrate an association between hsTnT, a marker of subclinical cardiac ischaemia, and subsequent renal function decline. Further research is required to establish the predictive value of hsTnT and response to intervention

    The ecodesign and planning of sustainable neighbourhoods : the Vallbona case study (Barcelona)

    Global sustainability is increasingly an issue of urban sustainability, being essential to encourage more benign trajectories of urbanisation. For this, there is need for a framework that could aid in the process of designing and redesigning (retrofitting) cities. The aim of this paper is to present and describe the methodology of urban ecodesign, which is characterized by a systematic incorporation of environmental life cycle considerations into the design of urban systems. The paper presents a case study of neighbourhood ecodesign from the city of Barcelona (Vallbona neighbourhood). This practical experience shows that the inclusion of sustainability criteria at an early stage of the design and planning of urban systems is the best strategy for environmental protection.In addition; a methodological framework is described in order to provide planners with a structured way of designing urban settlements so as to move towards sustainable urban environments.La sostenibilidad global es cada vez más un tema de sostenibilidad urbana. Por este motivo, es necesario un marco de trabajo que pueda ayudar en el proceso de diseño y rediseño (rehabilitación) de nuestras ciudades. El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar y describir la metodología de ecodiseño adaptada a los entornos urbanos, la cual se caracteriza por la incorporación sistemática de las consideraciones ambientales a lo largo de su ciclo de vida. El documento presenta un caso de estudio de ecodiseño del barrio de Vallbona (Barcelona). Esta experiencia demuestra que la inclusión de criterios de sostenibilidad en las etapas iniciales de diseño y planificación de los sistemas urbanos es la mejor estrategia para la prevención ambiental. Además, se presenta un marco metodológico con el fin de proporcionar a los planificadores una forma estructurada de diseño de los asentamientos urbanos que les permita avanzar hacia entornos urbanos más sostenibles

    South Canyon, localit\ue0 tipo della Zona a Desatoyense, la prima zona del Carnico nella scala cronostratigrafica nordamericana, nel 2010 e 2011 \ue8 stata oggetto di campionamenti strato-per-strato che hanno permesso di individuare una specie nuova di Trachyceras, che viene descritta in questo lavoro. La specie \ue8 dedicata a Norman J. Silberling (1928-2011) che per 50 anni \ue8 stato l\u2019autorit\ue0 indiscussa per la stratigrafia del Triassico marino nella parte occidentale degli Stati Uniti. Trachyceras silberlingi n. sp. \ue8 caratterizzato da un\u2019ornamentazione molto particolare, che consiste in due serie spirali di bullae sul fianco, una in posizione vicina al margine ombelicale e una a circa il 70% di altezza del fianco, e da coste che spesso si congiungono a coppie alla bulla laterale. La nuova specie \ue8 stata raccolta dal sito F, il sito stratigraficamente pi\uf9 alto del membro medio della Augusta Mountain Formation di South Canyon, ove rappresenta la prima sicura presenza del genere Trachyceras Laube, 1869. Per questo motivo la nuova specie T. silberlingi \ue8 estremamente utile per una prima revisione della Zona a Desatoyense, basata originariamente su raccolte di ammonoidi effettuate nella parte inferiore del membro medio della Augusta Mountain Formation, senza distinzione sui livelli di raccolta. Si propone quindi la sostituzione della Zona a Desatoyense con due unit\ue0 biostratigrafiche. I Daxatina beds sono una biozona informale caratterizzata dalla presenza di Daxatina e Frankites sutherlandi, e sono seguiti dalla biozona a Trachyceras silberlingi. Quest\u2019ultima \ue8 una zona di distribuzione formalmente istituita in questo lavoro, caratterizzata dalla presenza di Trachyceras. Viene delineato il significato cronostratigrafico delle due biozone, ma il completamento della revisione del Carnico Inferiore della scala nordamericana sar\ue0 possibile solo dopo il completamento della revisione tassonomica di tutte le faune raccolte.New intensive bed-by-bed ammonoid collecting efforts conducted in 2010 and 2011 at South Canyon, the type locality of the lowest Carnian Desatoyense Zone of the North American chronostratigraphic scale, have lead to the recognition of a new species of Trachyceras that is herein described. The new species is dedicated to Norman J. Silberling (1928-2011), who was widely recognized as the leading authority on marine Triassic stratigraphy in western US for over 50 years. T. silberlingi n. sp. is characterized by a peculiar ornamentation consisting of two spiral rows of bullae on the flank (first row on umbilical shoulder and second row at about 70% of whorl height) and by ribs frequently looped in pairs at the lateral bulla. The new species, from South Canyon site F, the stratigraphically highest level of the fossiliferous succession of the middle member of the Augusta Mountain Formation, represents the first definite occurrence of the genus Trachyceras Laube, 1869 in this succession. For this reason T. silberlingi n. sp. is of great importance for the revision of the Desatoyense Zone, a unit defined on the basis of a large collection of ammonoids described in 1941 from the lower part of the middle member of the Augusta Mountain Formation, without regard for the number and position of fossil bearing levels. We herein propose the subdivision and replacement of the former Desatoyense Zone with two biostratigraphic units: the lower unit referred to as the Daxatina beds, is an informal biozone characterized by the occurrence of Daxatina and Frankites sutherlandi, and the overlying Trachyceras silberlingi biozone is a range zone characterized by the occurrence of Trachyceras, based on the new species. The chronostratigraphic potential of this proposed subdivision is briefly outlined, but it will be more accurately defined upon completion of the taxonomic revision of the South Canyon ammonoid faunas

    Evolution of far-from-equilibrium nanostructures on Ag(100) surfaces: Protrusions and indentations at extended step edges

    Scanning tunneling microscopy is used to monitor the formation and relaxation of nanoprotrusions and nanoindentations at extended step edges following submonolayer deposition of Ag on Ag(100). Deposition of up to about 1/4 ML Ag produces isolated two-dimensional (2D) Ag clusters, which subsequently diffuse, collide, and coalesce with extended step edges, thus forming protrusions. Deposition of larger submonolayer amounts of Ag causes existing step edges to advance across terraces, incorporating 2D islands. The resulting irregular step structure rapidly straightens after terminating deposition, except for a few larger indentations. Relaxation of these far-from-equilibrium step-edge nanoconfigurations is monitored to determine rates for restructuring versus local geometry and feature size. This behavior is analyzed utilizing kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of an atomistic lattice-gas model for relaxation of step-edge nanostructures. In this model, mass transport is mediated by diffusion along the step edge (i.e., “periphery diffusion”). The model consistently fits observed behavior, and allows a detailed characterization of the relaxation process, including assessment of key activation energies
