Tissue Localization and Extracellular Matrix Degradation by PI, PII and PIII Snake Venom Metalloproteinases: Clues on the Mechanisms of Venom-Induced Hemorrhage
20 páginas, 4 figuras, 3 tablas y 7 tablas en material suplementario.Snake venom hemorrhagic metalloproteinases (SVMPs) of the PI, PII and PIII classes were compared in terms of tissue localization and their ability to hydrolyze basement membrane components in vivo, as well as by a proteomics analysis of exudates collected in tissue injected with these enzymes. Immunohistochemical analyses of co-localization of these SVMPs with type IV collagen revealed that PII and PIII enzymes co-localized with type IV collagen in capillaries, arterioles and post-capillary venules to a higher extent than PI SVMP, which showed a more widespread distribution in the tissue. The patterns of hydrolysis by these three SVMPs of laminin, type VI collagen and nidogen in vivo greatly differ, whereas the three enzymes showed a similar pattern of degradation of type IV collagen, supporting the concept that hydrolysis of this component is critical for the destabilization of microvessel structure leading to hemorrhage. Proteomic analysis of wound exudate revealed similarities and differences between the action of the three SVMPs. Higher extent of proteolysis was observed for the PI enzyme regarding several extracellular matrix components and fibrinogen, whereas exudates from mice injected with PII and PIII SVMPs had higher amounts of some intracellular proteins. Objective: To reflect the situation of the websites of the hospital libraries in Spain in 2003.
Material and methods: The websites of the hospital libraries have been located through C-17 directory, various hospital directories and searching Google, Altavista and Alltheweb. It has been applied the questionnaire of evaluation of websites with pondered punctuation by LluÃs Codina. Visibility indicators have been obtained as well as accessibility according TAW. Results: From the C-17 catalogue have been retrieved 176 hospital libraries, of which 13 have a website; we added to these other 19 websites found through other directories and search engines. Of those 32 websites, 2 were not active; the remaining 30 were analyzed. Five of them passed the Codina's test of level I. In the TAW priority level 1, the problems detected automatically oscillated between 0 and 77.
Conclusions: The results show the low number of hospital libraries with websites on the internet. The websites quality should be improved following the recommendations of the checkup lists to evaluate digital resources on the internet. The scarce visibility of these webs, hinders greatly its localization. On the other hand, the low accessibility rate of these webs blocks their visualization to handicapped people
Tensor product representation of Kothe-Bochner spaces and their dual spaces
We provide a tensor product representation of Kothe-Bochner function spaces of vector valued integrable functions. As an application, we show that the dual space of a Kothe-Bochner function space can be understood as a space of operators satisfying a certain extension property. We apply our results in order to give an alternate representation of the dual of the Bochner spaces of p-integrable functions and to analyze some properties of the natural norms that are defined on the associated tensor products.First and third authors are supported by grant MTM201453009-P of the Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad (Spain). Psychometric properties of a test in evidence based practice: the Spanish version of the Fresno test
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Validated instruments are needed to evaluate the programmatic impact of Evidence Based Practice (EBP) training and to document the competence of individual trainees. This study aimed to translate the Fresno test into Spanish and subsequently validate it, in order to ensure the equivalence of the Spanish version against the original English version.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Before and after study performed between October 2007 and June 2008. Three groups of participants: (a) Mentors of family medicine residents (expert group) (n = 56); (b) Family medicine physicians (intermediate experience group) (n = 17); (c) Family medicine residents (novice group) (n = 202); Medical residents attended an EBP course, and two sets of the test were administered before and after the course. The Fresno test is a performance based measure for use in medical education that assesses EBP skills. The outcome measures were: inter-rater and intra-rater reliability, internal consistency, item analyses, construct validity, feasibility of administration, and responsiveness.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Inter-rater correlations were 0.95 and 0.85 in the pre-test and the post-test respectively. The overall intra-rater reliability was 0.71 and 0.81 in the pre-test and post-test questionnaire, respectively. Cronbach's alpha was 0.88 and 0.77, respectively. 152 residents (75.2%) returned both sets of the questionnaire. The observed effect size for the residents was 1.77 (CI 95%: 1.57-1.95), the standardised response mean was 1.65 (CI 95%:1.47-1.82).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The Spanish version of the Fresno test is a useful tool in assessing the knowledge and skills of EBP in Spanish-speaking residents of Family Medicine.</p
Randomized planning of dynamic motions avoiding forward singularities
The final publication is available at link.springer.comForward singularities, also known as direct, or actuator singularities, cause many problems to the planning and control of robot motions. They yield position errors and rigidity losses of the robot, and generate unbounded actions in typical control laws. To circumvent these issues, this paper proposes a randomized kinodynamic planner for computing trajectories avoiding such singularities. Given initial and final states for the robot, the planner attempts to connect them by means of a dynamically-feasible, singularity-free trajectory that also respects the force limits of the actuators. A novel presenilin 1 duplication mutation (Ile168dup) causing Alzheimer's disease associated with myoclonus, seizures and pyramidal features
Mutations in the Presenilin 1 (PSEN1) gene are the most common cause of autosomal dominant familial Alzheimer's disease. We report the clinical, imaging and postmortem findings of kindred carrying a novel duplication mutation (Ile168dup) in the PSEN1 gene. We interpret the pathogenicity of this novel variant and discuss the additional neurological features (pyramidal dysfunction, myoclonus and seizures) that accompanied cognitive decline. This report broadens the clinical phenotype of PSEN1 insertion mutations while also highlighting the importance of considering duplication, insertion and deletion mutations in cases of young onset dementia
Experimental study on the effect of adaptive flaps on the aerodynamics of an Ahmed body
We perform an experimental study on the turbulent flow around a square-back Ahmed body of height, h, at varying Re=u∞h/ν∈[0.5,1]×105, where u∞ is the free-stream velocity and ν is the incoming flow kinematic viscosity, under different yaw angles β=(0∘,-5∘,-10∘), to analyze the use of rear flexibly hinged parallel plates as a control strategy to reduce the drag in a self-adaptive manner under changing flow conditions. The model implements rear parallel rigid flaps of depth d=0.5h, which are mounted with torsional joints through embedded flexible foils of calibrated thickness. This holding system restricts the motion of the plates to a rotary displacement, θ. The fluid-structure dynamics is characterized by the reduced velocity, defined as U∗=u∞/fnh, where fn is the natural frequency of rotary oscillations of the hinged plates, measured in free-decay tests of flaps. In fact, we have explored the range of reduced velocity, U∗=[0,65], varying u∞ and consequently Re. We perform force and pressure measurements to quantify the variations of the drag and the base pressure coefficients while laser displacement sensors are used to obtain the angular flaps motion. Results show that the hinged plates decrease the drag coefficient of the original body by nearly 4.4% for flow conditions aligned with the body axis. Under cross-flow conditions, their efficiency is even larger, attaining relative reductions drag of nearly 9.1% at β=-10∘ (13.5% in comparison with a body with fixed rigid plates of the same depth). Such variations are shown to be associated with a passive reconfiguration process of rear flaps. Additionally, hinged flaps are shown to interact with the reflectional-symmetry-breaking (RSB) modes, typically present in the wake of three-dimensional bodies. At aligned conditions, the interaction with the RSB modes is characterized by two regimes, in such a way that the hinged flaps manage to partially stabilize the RSB modes, and consequently to inhibit the bistable behavior at low values of U∗ (in a similar manner to rigid flaps), while at high values of U∗, they respond dynamically to switches between the opposite wake deflections of the RSB modes, deviating themselves accordingly
