Insights into the quark-gluon vertex from lattice QCD and meson spectroscopy
By comparing successful quark-gluon vertex interaction models with the
corresponding interaction extracted from lattice-QCD data on the quark's
propagator, we identify common qualitative features which could be important to
tune future interaction models beyond the rainbow ladder approximation.
Clearly, a quantitative comparison is conceptually not simple, but
qualitatively the results suggest that a realistic interaction should be
relatively broad with a strong support at about ~GeV and
infrared-finite
B Meson Decay Constants From NRQCD
We present quenched results for B meson decay constants using NRQCD b quarks
and O(a) tadpole improved clover light quarks. For the first time, one-loop
matching factors between lattice and continuum currents are incorporated
through O(\alpha/M) taking operator mixing fully into account. This includes an
important O(\alpha a) discretization correction to the heavy-light axial vector
current. We find f_B = 0.147(11)(^{+8}_{-12})(9)(6) MeV and f_{B_s}/f_B =
1.20(4)(^{+4}_{-0}).

A Semidefinite Programming approach for minimizing ordered weighted averages of rational functions
This paper considers the problem of minimizing the ordered weighted average
(or ordered median) function of finitely many rational functions over compact
semi-algebraic sets. Ordered weighted averages of rational functions are not,
in general, neither rational functions nor the supremum of rational functions
so that current results available for the minimization of rational functions
cannot be applied to handle these problems. We prove that the problem can be
transformed into a new problem embedded in a higher dimension space where it
admits a convenient representation. This reformulation admits a hierarchy of
SDP relaxations that approximates, up to any degree of accuracy, the optimal
value of those problems. We apply this general framework to a broad family of
continuous location problems showing that some difficult problems (convex and
non-convex) that up to date could only be solved on the plane and with
Euclidean distance, can be reasonably solved with different -norms and
in any finite dimension space. We illustrate this methodology with some
extensive computational results on location problems in the plane and the

Potential Models for Radiative Rare B Decays
We compute the branching ratios for the radiative rare decays of B into
K-Meson states and compare them to the experimentally determined branching
ratio for inclusive decay b -> s gamma using non relativistic quark model, and
form factor definitions consistent with HQET covariant trace formalism. Such
calculations necessarily involve a potential model. In order to test the
sensitivity of calculations to potential models we have used three different
potentials, namely linear potential, screening confining potential and heavy
quark potential as it stands in QCD.We find the branching ratios relative to
the inclusive b ->s gamma decay to be (16.07\pm 5.2)% for B -> K^* (892)gamma
and (7.25\pm 3.2)% for B -> K_2^* (1430)gamma for linear potential. In the case
of the screening confining potential these values are (19.75\pm 5.3)% and
(4.74\pm 1.2)% while those for the heavy quark potential are (11.18\pm 4.6)%
and (5.09\pm 2.7)% respectively. All these values are consistent with the
corresponding present CLEO experimental values: (16.25\pm 1.21)% and (5.93\pm

The Application of Building Modifications and their Effects on Energy Consumption in Buildings
A huge amount of energy is used for air-conditioning in residential buildings in hot climates. Passive design features such as shading and advanced glazing can help to reduce energy use and carbon emissions, and thus mitigate the impact on climate change. This paper aimed at demonstrating how the application of selected modification devices such as solar films and shading devices affects the energy consumption patterns and levels in a residential building. A model of a building was constructed with VE using “Model IT” module, which was then analysed in a variety of different ways. A Virtual Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES-VE) was used to assess the energy gain and consumption parameters such as solar gains, shading devices, solar cloud and chilli clouds in residential buildings in Tripoli, Libya. The findings indicate that the best way to control and reduce the energy gains pattern in a building is to introduce energy modification devices such as shading device, solar films, emissivity paints and roof slab absorbers among others. In specific terms, the best device would be the application of external solar film, follow by shading device and internal solar film. An application of emissivity paints and roof slab absorbers does not contribute significantly to the energy reduction in the building. The study concludes that the application of modification devices in buildings can reduces the heat gain significantly. This study underscores the need and importance of the applications of energy modification devices in buildings in order to reduce their energy gains in the context of tropical regions. Though the climatological characteristics of tropical regions are similar, the generalisation of the findings in this study requires caution since the findings are limited in geographical context. Future research should also explore the impact of urban forms, street layout and orientation on solar penetration and energy use in buildings. Exploiting the Synergy Between Gossiping and Structured Overlays
In this position paper we argue for exploiting the synergy between gossip-based algorithms and structured overlay networks (SON). These two strands of research have both aimed at building fault-tolerant, dynamic, self-managing, and large-scale distributed systems. Despite the common goals, the two areas have, however, been relatively isolated. We focus on three problem domains where there is an untapped potential of using gossiping combined with SONs. We argue for applying gossip-based membership for ring-based SONs---such as Chord and Bamboo---to make them handle partition mergers and loopy networks. We argue that small world SONs---such as Accordion and Mercury---are specifically well-suited for gossip-based membership management. The benefits would be better graph-theoretic properties. Finally, we argue that gossip-based algorithms could use the overlay constructed by SONs. For example, many unreliable broadcast algorithms for SONs could be augmented with anti-entropy protocols. Similarly, gossip-based aggregation could be used in SONs for network size estimation and load-balancing purposes
Are Complications Associated With the Repiphysis(®) Expandable Distal Femoral Prosthesis Acceptable for Its Continued Use?
BACKGROUND:
Reconstruction of the distal femur after resection for malignant bone tumors in skeletally immature children is challenging. The use of megaprostheses has become increasingly popular in this patient group since the introduction of custom-made, expandable devices that do not require surgery for lengthening, such as the Repiphysis(®) Limb Salvage System. Early reports on the device were positive but more recently, a high complication rate and associated bone loss have been reported.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES:
We asked: (1) what are the clinical outcomes using the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) scoring system after 5-year minimum followup in patients treated with this prosthesis at one center; (2) what are the problems and complications associated with the lengthening procedures of this implant; and (3) what are the specific concerns associated with revision of this implant?
METHODS:
At our institute, between 2002 and 2007, the Repiphysis(®) expandable prosthesis was implanted in 15 children (mean age, 8 years; range, 6-11 years) after distal femoral resection for malignant bone tumors. During this time, the general indication for use of this implant was resection of the distal femur for localized malignant bone tumors in pediatric patients. Alternative techniques used for this indication were modular prosthetic reconstruction, massive (osteoarticular or intercalary) allograft reconstruction, or rotationplasty. Age and tumor extension were the main factors to decide on the surgical indication. Of the 15 patients who had this prosthesis implanted during reconstruction surgery, five died with the implant in situ or underwent amputation before 5 years followup and the remaining 10 were evaluated at a minimum of 5 years (mean, 104 months; range, 78-140 months). No patients were lost to followup. These 10 patients were long-term survivors and underwent the lengthening program. They were included in our study analysis. The first seven lengthening procedures were attempted in an outpatient setting; however, owing to pain and burning sensations experienced by the patients, the procedures failed to achieve the desired lengthening. Therefore, other procedures were performed with the patients under general anesthesia. We reviewed clinical data at index surgery for all 15 patients. We further analyzed the lengthening procedures, implant survival, radiographic and functional results, for the 10 long-term survivors. Functional results were assessed according to the MSTS scoring system. Complications were classified according to the International Society of Limb Salvage (ISOLS) classification system.
RESULTS:
Nine of the 10 survivors underwent revision of the implant for mechanical failure. They had a mean MSTS score of 64% (range, 47%-87%) before revision surgery. At final followup the 10 long-term surviving patients had an average MSTS score of 81% (range, 53%-97%). In total, we obtained an average lengthening of 39 mm per patient (range, 17-67 mm). Exact expansion of the implant was unpredictable and difficult to control. Nine of 10 of the long-term surviving patients underwent revision surgery of the prosthesis-eight for implant breakage and one for stem loosening. At revision surgery, six patients had another type of expandable prosthesis implanted and three had an adult-type megaprosthesis implanted. In five cases, segmental bone grafts were used during revision surgery to compensate for loss of bone stock.
CONCLUSIONS:
We could not comfortably expand the Repiphysis(®) prosthesis in an outpatient setting because of pain experienced by the patients during the lengthening procedures. Furthermore, use of the prosthesis was associated with frequent failures related to implant breakage and stem loosening. Revisions of these procedures were complex and difficult. We no longer use this prosthesis and caution others against the use of this particular prosthesis design.
