    Theory of a cavity around a large floating sphere in complex (dusty) plasma

    In the last experiment with the PK-3 Plus laboratory onboard the International Space Station, interactions of millimeter-size metallic spheres with a complex plasma were studied~[M. Schwabe {\it et al.}, New J. Phys. {\bf 19}, 103019 (2017)]. Among the phenomena observed was the formation of cavities (regions free of microparticles forming a complex plasma) surrounding the spheres. The size of the cavity is governed by the balance of forces experienced by the microparticles at the cavity edge. In this article we develop a detailed theoretical model describing the cavity size and demonstrate that it agrees well with sizes measured experimentally. The model is based on a simple practical expression for the ion drag force, which is constructed to take into account simultaneously the effects of non-linear ion-particle coupling and ion-neutral collisions. The developed model can be useful for describing interactions between a massive body and surrounding complex plasma in a rather wide parameter regime.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures; to be published (2019

    Dynamics and calcium association to the N-terminal regulatory domain of human cardiac troponin C: a multiscale computational study.

    Troponin C (TnC) is an important regulatory molecule in cardiomyocytes. Calcium binding to site II in TnC initiates a series of molecular events that result in muscle contraction. The most direct change upon Ca(2+) binding is an opening motion of the molecule that exposes a hydrophobic patch on the surface allowing for Troponin I to bind. Molecular dynamics simulations were used to elucidate the dynamics of this crucial protein in three different states: apo, Ca(2+)-bound, and Ca(2+)-TnI-bound. Dynamics between the states are compared, and the Ca(2+)-bound system is investigated for opening motions. On the basis of the simulations, NMR chemical shifts and order parameters are calculated and compared with experimental observables. Agreement indicates that the simulations sample the relevant dynamics of the system. Brownian dynamics simulations are used to investigate the calcium association of TnC. We find that calcium binding gives rise to correlative motions involving the EF hand and collective motions conducive of formation of the TnI-binding interface. We furthermore indicate the essential role of electrostatic steering in facilitating diffusion-limited binding of Ca(2+)

    Tax Incentives for Charitable Giving: Evidence from the Canton of Geneva, Switzerland

    This contribution presents the legal framework of income tax incentives for charitable giving in Switzerland and describes the reform putting this system in place in 2006. Using a unique data set shared by the Tax Administration of the Canton of Geneva for this purpose, we provide descriptive statistics about taxpayers’ charitable giving behaviour in Geneva from 2001 to 2011. In this period, the number of taxpayers deducting charitable contributions significantly increased. In contrast, the size of individual annual deductions (both mean and median) decreases. The data show that the amount of tax deductions for charitable giving sharply increases relative to income class, and the median charitable deduction by taxpayer rises exponentially with income (i.e. years 2001 and 2011). Currently, no clear effects of the 2006 tax reform are visible; however, more in-depth studies are needed in this respect

    ERP effects of subject-verb agreement violations in patients with Broca's aphasia

    Contains fulltext : 13805.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)This article presents electrophysiological data on on-line syntactic processing during auditory sentence comprehension in patients with Broca's aphasia. Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded from the scalp while subjects listened to sentences that were either syntactically correct or contained violations of subject-verb agreement. Three groups of subjects were tested: Broca patients (n = 10), nonaphasic patients with a right-hemisphere (RH) lesion (n = 5), and healthy agedmatched controls (n = 12). The healthy, control subjects showed a P600/SPS effect as response to the agreement violations. The nonaphasic patients with an RH lesion showed essentially the same pattern. The overall group of Broca patients did not show this sensitivity. However, the sensitivity was modulated by the severity of the syntactic comprehension impairment. The largest deviation from the standard P600/SPS effect was found in the patients with the relatively more severe syntactic comprehension impairment. In addition, ERPs to tones in a classical tone oddball paradigm were also recorded. Similar to the normal control subjects and RH patients, the group of Broca patients showed a P300 effect in the tone oddball condition. This indicates that aphasia in itself does not lead to a general reduction in all cognitive ERP effects. It was concluded that deviations from the standard P600/SPS effect in the Broca patients reflected difficulties with on-line maintaining of number information across clausal boundaries for establishing subject-verb agreement

    Annotated translation is a study that provides annotations or notes on the chosen equivalents of a number of translated words as a form of translator’s accountability. Using a comparative model, this qualitative study aims to describe the problems that were encountered when translating the source text and finding the right translation strategy to be used for addressing the existing translation problems. In this research, the source text is a children literature (tale) titled Le Fils à la recherche de sa mère by Senegalese author. The problems that were encountered when translating this tale were issues related to language and culture, such as idioms, metaphors, and cultural words. The translation problems were then addressed by using translation strategies (methods and procedures) according to Newmark (1988). In generating translations and annotations, this research referred to various dictionaries and websites. The findings of this research are expected to enrich the French children literature translations from African countries that are rarely found in Indonesia

    Line Oscillator Strength Measurements in the 0-0 Band of the c′4 1Σu+ ← X 1Σg+ Transition of N2

    Oscillator strengths for 48 rotational lines in the 0-0 band of the c1Σ ← X1Σ transition of 14N2, a prominent feature in planetary airglow emissions, have been determined from vacuum ultraviolet photoabsorption spectra recorded with an instrumental resolution of ~ 6.5 × 10-4 nm (resolving power ≈150,000). The sum of the integrated cross sections over all measured lines, including six lines appearing on account of a local perturbation by v = 1 of the b' state, yields a room temperature band f-value of 0.136 ± 0.020. This result is compared with earlier measurements of band-integrated absorption cross sections and with a study of electron-impact-induced emission from c(0), as well as with electron scattering measurements and a nonadiabatic calculation of vibronic band strengths. The relative P- and R-branch absorption intensities deviate systematically from those of an unperturbed 1Σ ← 1Σ band, as expected from the interactions of the c (v = 0) level with nearby Rydberg and valence states. In addition, the variation of the band f-values derived from pairs of R- and P-branch transitions with a common lower-state rotational level, f(J''), are found to be J-dependent, indicating that the f-value obtained from the band-integrated absorption cross section is slightly temperature dependent. The J-dependence of f(J'') is briefly discussed in the context of the interference patterns which characterize the absorption strengths in the region of the widespread interactions between Rydberg and valence state levels

    Quasi-variational coupled-cluster theory: Performance of perturbative treatments of connected triple excitations

    Quasi-variational coupled-cluster methods are applied to a selection of diatomic molecules. The potential energy curves, spectroscopic constants, and size consistency errors are calculated and compared to those obtained from both single- and multi-reference methods. The effects of connected triple excitations are introduced with either the standard perturbative (T) formulation, or in the renormalised form, and its symmetrised approximation. It is found that the renormalised ansatz is significantly superior to the standard formulation when describing bond breaking and that in most circumstances, the computationally simpler symmetrisation gives nearly identical results
