Evolution Semigroups in Supersonic Flow-Plate Interactions
We consider the well-posedness of a model for a flow-structure interaction.
This model describes the dynamics of an elastic flexible plate with clamped
boundary conditions immersed in a supersonic flow. A perturbed wave equation
describes the flow potential. The plate's out-of-plane displacement can be
modeled by various nonlinear plate equations (including von Karman and Berger).
We show that the linearized model is well-posed on the state space (as given by
finite energy considerations) and generates a strongly continuous semigroup. We
make use of these results to conclude global-in-time well-posedness for the
fully nonlinear model.
The proof of generation has two novel features, namely: (1) we introduce a
new flow potential velocity-type variable which makes it possible to cover both
subsonic and supersonic cases, and to split the dynamics generating operator
into a skew-adjoint component and a perturbation acting outside of the state
space. Performing semigroup analysis also requires a nontrivial approximation
of the domain of the generator. And (2) we make critical use of hidden
regularity for the flow component of the model (in the abstract setup for the
semigroup problem) which allows us run a fixed point argument and eventually
conclude well-posedness. This well-posedness result for supersonic flows (in
the absence of rotational inertia) has been hereto open. The use of semigroup
methods to obtain well-posedness opens this model to long-time behavior

Weak splittings of quotients of Drinfeld and Heisenberg doubles
We investigate the fine structure of the simplectic foliations of Poisson
homogeneous spaces. Two general results are proved for weak splittings of
surjective Poisson submersions from Heisenberg and Drinfeld doubles. The
implications of these results are that the torus orbits of symplectic leaves of
the quotients can be explicitly realized as Poisson-Dirac submanifolds of the
torus orbits of the doubles. The results have a wide range of applications to
many families of real and complex Poisson structures on flag varieties. Their
torus orbits of leaves recover important families of varieties such as the open

Keeping a Single Qubit Alive by Experimental Dynamic Decoupling
We demonstrate the use of dynamic decoupling techniques to extend the
coherence time of a single memory qubit by nearly two orders of magnitude. By
extending the Hahn spin-echo technique to correct for unknown, arbitrary
polynomial variations in the qubit precession frequency, we show analytically
that the required sequence of pi-pulses is identical to the Uhrig dynamic
decoupling (UDD) sequence. We compare UDD and CPMG sequences applied to a
single Ca-43 trapped-ion qubit and find that they afford comparable protection

Combined Spatial Prediction of Schistosomiasis and Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis in Sierra Leone: A Tool for Integrated Disease Control
Two forms of schistosomiasis or bilharzia (intestinal and urogenital) exist in Sierra Leone. The main control strategy for this disease currently is through mass drug administration (MDA) according to the World Health Organization recommended anthelminthic chemotherapy guidelines, and others include snail control, behavior change, and safe water, sanitation and hygiene. Survey on distribution and prevalence of the disease is vital to the planning of MDA in each district. The distribution of intestinal schistosomiasis in the country has been reported previously. The current national survey showed that urogenital schistosomiasis has a specific focal distribution particularly in the central and eastern regions of the country, most prevalent in Bo (24.6%), Koinadugu (20.4%) and Kono (25.3%) districts. Using a simple probabilistic model, this map was combined with the previously reported maps on intestinal schistosomiasis and the combined schistosomiasis prevalence was estimated. The combined schistosomiasis map highlights the presence of high-risk communities in an extensive area in the northeastern half of the country, which provides a tool for planning the national MDA activities
