Elastic properties of a tungsten-silver composite by reconstruction and computation
We statistically reconstruct a three-dimensional model of a tungsten-silver
composite from an experimental two-dimensional image. The effective Young's
modulus () of the model is computed in the temperature range 25-1060^o C
using a finite element method. The results are in good agreement with
experimental data. As a test case, we have reconstructed the microstructure and
computed the moduli of the overlapping sphere model. The reconstructed and
overlapping sphere models are examples of bi-continuous (non-particulate)
media. The computed moduli of the models are not generally in good agreement
with the predictions of the self-consistent method. We have also evaluated
three-point variational bounds on the Young's moduli of the models using the
results of Beran, Molyneux, Milton and Phan-Thien. The measured data were close
to the upper bound if the properties of the two phases were similar ().Comment: 23 Pages, 12 Figure
Pseudoscalar pole terms contributions to hadronic light-by-light corrections to the muonium hyperfine splitting
The contribution of pseudoscalar pole diagrams to the hadronic light-by-light
corrections of order alpha^3 E_F to the ground state hyperfine splitting in
hydrogenic atom is calculated in the pseudoscalar pole terms approximation. The
vector dominance model for the form factor of the transition of a pseudoscalar
meson into two photons is used. With the account of new experimental data on
the cross sections sigma (e^+e^-\to \rho, \omega \to \pi^0(\eta)\gamma) in the
SND and CMD-2 experiments some other hadronic corrections to the muonium

Cooling rate dependence of the antiferromagnetic domain structure of a single crystalline charge ordered manganite
The low temperature phase of single crystals of NdCaMnO
and GdCaMnO manganites is investigated by squid
magnetometry. NdCaMnO undergoes a charge-ordering
transition at =245K, and a long range CE-type antiferromagnetic state
is established at =145K. The dc-magnetization shows a cooling rate
dependence below , associated with a weak spontaneous moment. The
associated excess magnetization is related to uncompensated spins in the
CE-type antiferromagnetic structure, and to the presence in this state of
fully orbital ordered regions separated by orbital domain walls. The observed
cooling rate dependence is interpreted to be a consequence of the rearrangement
of the orbital domain state induced by the large structural changes occurring

Preparation of facilities for fundamental research with ultracold neutrons at PNPI
The WWR-M reactor of PNPI offers a unique opportunity to prepare a source for
ultracold neutrons (UCN) in an environment of high neutron flux (about 3*10^12
n/cm^2/s) at still acceptable radiation heat release (about 4*10^-3 W/g). It
can be realized within the reactor thermal column situated close to the reactor
core. With its large diameter of 1 m, this channel allows to install a 15 cm
thick bismuth shielding, a graphite premoderator (300 dm^3 at 20 K), and a
superfluid helium converter (35 dm^3). At a temperature of 1.2 K it is possible
to remove the heat release power of about 20 W. Using the 4pi flux of cold
neutrons within the reactor column can bring more than a factor 100 of cold
neutron flux incident on the superfluid helium with respect to the present cold
neutron beam conditions at the ILL reactor. The storage lifetime for UCN in
superfluid He at 1.2 K is about 30 s, which is sufficient when feeding
experiments requiring a similar filling time. The calculated density of UCN
with energy between 50 neV and 250 neV in an experimental volume of 40 liters
is about 10^4 n/cm^3. Technical solutions for realization of the project are

Two-loop corrections to the decay rate of parapositronium
Order corrections to the decay rate of parapositronium are
calculated. A QED scattering calculation of the amplitude for electron-positron
annihilation into two photons at threshold is combined with the technique of
effective field theory to determine an NRQED Hamiltonian, which is then used in
a bound state calculation to determine the decay rate. Our result for the
two-loop correction is in units of times the
lowest order rate. This is consistent with but more precise than the result

Dynamics of Entanglement in One-Dimensional Spin Systems
We study the dynamics of quantum correlations in a class of exactly solvable
Ising-type models. We analyze in particular the time evolution of initial Bell
states created in a fully polarized background and on the ground state. We find
that the pairwise entanglement propagates with a velocity proportional to the
reduced interaction for all the four Bell states. Singlet-like states are
favored during the propagation, in the sense that triplet-like states change
their character during the propagation under certain circumstances.
Characteristic for the anisotropic models is the instantaneous creation of
pairwise entanglement from a fully polarized state; furthermore, the
propagation of pairwise entanglement is suppressed in favor of a creation of
different types of entanglement. The ``entanglement wave'' evolving from a Bell
state on the ground state turns out to be very localized in space-time. Further
support to a recently formulated conjecture on entanglement sharing is given.Comment: 25 pages, 21 figures; revte
Macromolecular theory of solvation and structure in mixtures of colloids and polymers
The structural and thermodynamic properties of mixtures of colloidal spheres
and non-adsorbing polymer chains are studied within a novel general
two-component macromolecular liquid state approach applicable for all size
asymmetry ratios. The dilute limits, when one of the components is at infinite
dilution but the other concentrated, are presented and compared to field theory
and models which replace polymer coils with spheres. Whereas the derived
analytical results compare well, qualitatively and quantitatively, with
mean-field scaling laws where available, important differences from ``effective
sphere'' approaches are found for large polymer sizes or semi-dilute

Evolution of the electronic structure with size in II-VI semiconductor nanocrystals
In order to provide a quantitatively accurate description of the band gap
variation with sizes in various II-VI semiconductor nanocrystals, we make use
of the recently reported tight-binding parametrization of the corresponding
bulk systems. Using the same tight-binding scheme and parameters, we calculate
the electronic structure of II-VI nanocrystals in real space with sizes ranging
between 5 and 80 {\AA} in diameter. A comparison with available experimental
results from the literature shows an excellent agreement over the entire range
