    Ocean acidification disrupts the orientation of postlarval Caribbean spiny lobsters

Scientific Reports, 10(1), (2020): 18092, doi:10.1038/s41598-020-75021-9.Anthropogenic inputs into coastal ecosystems are causing more frequent environmental fluctuations and reducing seawater pH. One such ecosystem is Florida Bay, an important nursery for the Caribbean spiny lobster, Panulirus argus. Although adult crustaceans are often resilient to reduced seawater pH, earlier ontogenetic stages can be physiologically limited in their tolerance to ocean acidification on shorter time scales. We used a Y-maze chamber to test whether reduced-pH seawater altered the orientation of spiny lobster pueruli toward chemical cues produced by Laurencia spp. macroalgae, a known settlement cue for the species. We tested the hypothesis that pueruli conditioned in reduced-pH seawater would be less responsive to Laurencia spp. chemical cues than pueruli in ambient-pH seawater by comparing the proportion of individuals that moved to the cue side of the chamber with the proportion that moved to the side with no cue. We also recorded the amount of time (sec) before a response was observed. Pueruli conditioned in reduced-pH seawater were less responsive and failed to select the Laurencia cue. Our results suggest that episodic acidification of coastal waters might limit the ability of pueruli to locate settlement habitats, increasing postsettlement mortality.We thank the Steinwachs Family Foundation, which provided funding that supported Gravinese’s postdoctoral fellowship at Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium.     Parent Perceptions of a Novel Health Intervention for Neurodiverse Youth

    Background: Children with all types of disabilities are more likely to be inactive due to a variety of factors. Children with neurodevelopmental challenges such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and/or mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression face unique barriers to exercise, including increased demands on parenting resources. Thus there is a critical need for interventions understand parental perspectives and address such barriers in neurodiverse youth. The aim of this study was to explore parental perceptions of a novel exergaming and virtual health coaching intervention targeting neurodiverse youth, including barriers and facilitators of their children’s engagement, in order to help tailor future interventions. Methods: Parents of three children taking part in formative research prior to a full intervention pilot were interviewed using a semi-structured interview guide. Phone interviews were recorded and transcribed without identifying information. Themes were identified during joint review of transcripts by two researchers using an adapted grounded theory approach. Results: Three parents of participants (1 middle school, 2 high school; 2 male) took part. Important barriers identified included easy frustration with gaming technology, feeling defeated by game avatars, burden of coordinating participation in the intervention, and desire for different types of games (non-sporting or non-dance). Parents felt strongly that participation had improved their children’s perceptions of exercise and overall exercise engagement. Suggestions for improvement included utilizing games without a competitive component, creating integrated intervention interface for parents, participants, and coaches, and using newer technologies (such as virtual reality). Conclusions: The home-based, school-supported GameSquad exergaming intervention shows potential to improve physical activity engagement in this population, however, barriers remain that should be addressed prior to upscaling. Modifications such as integrated intervention interfaces and more diverse gaming options would help improve intervention engagement and decrease parental burden

    A large scale structure traced by [OII] emitters hosting a distant cluster at z=1.62

    We present a panoramic narrow-band imaging survey of [OII] emitters in and around the ClG J0218.3-0510 cluster at z=1.62 with Suprime-Cam on Subaru telescope. 352 [OII] emitters were identified on the basis of narrow-band excesses and photometric redshifts. We discovered a huge filamentary structure with some clumps traced by [OII] emitters and found that the ClG J0218.3-0510 cluster is embedded in an even larger super-structure than the one reported previously. 31 [OII] emitters were spectroscopically confirmed with the detection of H-alpha and/or [OIII] emission lines by FMOS observations. In the high density regions such as cluster core and clumps, star-forming [OII] emitters show a high overdensity by a factor of more than 10 compared to the field region. Although the star formation activity is very high even in the cluster core, some massive quiescent galaxies also exits at the same time. Furthermore, the properties of the individual [OII] emitters, such as star formation rates, stellar masses and specific star formation rates, do not show a significant dependence on the local density, either. Such lack of environmental dependence is consistent with our earlier result by Hayashi et al. (2011) on a z=1.5 cluster and its surrounding region. The fact that the star-forming activity of galaxies in the cluster core is as high as that in the field at z~1.6 may suggest that the star-forming galaxies are probably just in a transition phase from a starburst mode to a quiescent mode, and are thus showing comparable level of star formation rates to those in lower density environments. We may be witnessing the start of the reversal of the local SFR--density relation due to the "biased" galaxy formation and evolution in high density regions at high this redshift, beyond which massive galaxies would be forming vigorously in a more biased way in proto-cluster cores.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Second Generation Leptoquark Search in p\bar{p} Collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV

    We report on a search for second generation leptoquarks with the D\O\ detector at the Fermilab Tevatron ppˉp\bar{p} collider at s\sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV. This search is based on 12.7 pb1^{-1} of data. Second generation leptoquarks are assumed to be produced in pairs and to decay into a muon and quark with branching ratio β\beta or to neutrino and quark with branching ratio (1β)(1-\beta). We obtain cross section times branching ratio limits as a function of leptoquark mass and set a lower limit on the leptoquark mass of 111 GeV/c2^{2} for β=1\beta = 1 and 89 GeV/c2^{2} for β=0.5\beta = 0.5 at the 95%\ confidence level.Comment: 18 pages, FERMILAB-PUB-95/185-

    Search for First Generation Scalar Leptoquark Pairs in ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV

    We have searched for first generation scalar leptoquark (LQ) pairs in the enu+jets channel using ppbar collider data (integrated luminosity= 115 pb^-1) collected by the DZero experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron during 1992-96. The analysis yields no candidate events. We combine the results with those from the ee+jets and nunu+jets channels to obtain 95% confidence level (CL) upper limits on the LQ pair production cross section as a function of mass and of beta, the branching fraction to a charged lepton. Comparing with the next-to-leading order theory, we set 95% CL lower limits on the LQ mass of 225, 204, and 79 GeV/c^2 for beta=1, 1/2, and 0, respectively.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters Replaced to correct visitor addresse

    A Quasi-Model-Independent Search for New Physics at Large Transverse Momentum

    We apply a quasi-model-independent strategy ("Sleuth") to search for new high p_T physics in approximately 100 pb^-1 of ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV collected by the DZero experiment during 1992-1996 at the Fermilab Tevatron. Over thirty-two e mu X, W+jets-like, Z+jets-like, and 3(lepton/photon)X exclusive final states are systematically analyzed for hints of physics beyond the standard model. Simultaneous sensitivity to a variety of models predicting new phenomena at the electroweak scale is demonstrated by testing the method on a particular signature in each set of final states. No evidence of new high p_T physics is observed in the course of this search, and we find that 89% of an ensemble of hypothetical similar experimental runs would have produced a final state with a candidate signal more interesting than the most interesting observed in these data.Comment: 28 pages, 17 figures.     Search for Large Extra Dimensions in Dielectron and Diphoton Production

    We report a search for effects of large extra spatial dimensions in ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV with the DZero detector, using events containing a pair of electrons or photons. The data are in good agreement with the expected background and do not exhibit evidence for large extra dimensions. We set the most restrictive lower limits to date, at the 95% confidence level, on the effective Planck scale between 1.0 TeV and 1.4 TeV for several formalisms and numbers of extra dimensions.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys.     Search for Charge 1/3 Third Generation Leptoquarks in pbarp Collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV

    We report on a search for charge 1/3 third generation leptoquarks (LQ) produced in pbarp collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV using the D0 detector at Fermilab. Third generation leptoquarks are assumed to be produced in pairs and to decay to a tau neutrino and a b quark with branching fraction B. We place upper limits on sigma(pbarp to LQbarLQ)xB^2 as a function of the leptoquark mass M_LQ. Assuming B =1, we exclude at the 95% confidence level third generation scalar leptoquarks with M_LQ<94 GeV/c^2, and third generation vector leptoquarks with M_LQ<216 GeV/c^2 (M_LQ<148 GeV/c^2) assuming Yang-Mills (anomalous) coupling.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

    β-Carbonic Anhydrases Play a Role in Fruiting Body Development and Ascospore Germination in the Filamentous Fungus Sordaria macrospora

    Carbon dioxide (CO2) is among the most important gases for all organisms. Its reversible interconversion to bicarbonate (HCO3−) reaches equilibrium spontaneously, but slowly, and can be accelerated by a ubiquitous group of enzymes called carbonic anhydrases (CAs). These enzymes are grouped by their distinct structural features into α-, β-, γ-, δ- and ζ-classes. While physiological functions of mammalian, prokaryotic, plant and algal CAs have been extensively studied over the past years, the role of β-CAs in yeasts and the human pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans has been elucidated only recently, and the function of CAs in multicellular filamentous ascomycetes is mostly unknown. To assess the role of CAs in the development of filamentous ascomycetes, the function of three genes, cas1, cas2 and cas3 (carbonic anhydrase of Sordaria) encoding β-class carbonic anhydrases was characterized in the filamentous ascomycetous fungus Sordaria macrospora. Fluorescence microscopy was used to determine the localization of GFP- and DsRED-tagged CAs. While CAS1 and CAS3 are cytoplasmic enzymes, CAS2 is localized to the mitochondria. To assess the function of the three isoenzymes, we generated knock-out strains for all three cas genes (Δcas1, Δcas2, and Δcas3) as well as all combinations of double mutants. No effect on vegetative growth, fruiting-body and ascospore development was seen in the single mutant strains lacking cas1 or cas3, while single mutant Δcas2 was affected in vegetative growth, fruiting-body development and ascospore germination, and the double mutant strain Δcas1/2 was completely sterile. Defects caused by the lack of cas2 could be partially complemented by elevated CO2 levels or overexpression of cas1, cas3, or a non-mitochondrial cas2 variant. The results suggest that CAs are required for sexual reproduction in filamentous ascomycetes and that the multiplicity of isoforms results in redundancy of specific and non-specific functions

    Search for Second Generation Leptoquark Pairs Decaying to \mu\nu + jets in p-pbar Collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV

    We report on a search for second generation leptoquarks (LQ) produced in ppˉp\bar{p} collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV using the D0 detector at Fermilab. Second generation leptoquarks are assumed to be produced in pairs and to decay to either \mu or \nu and either a strange or a charm quark (q). Limits are placed on \sigma(p-pbar -> LQ-LQbar -> \mu\nu + jets) as a function of the mass of the leptoquark. For equal branching ratios to \mu q and \nu q, second generation scalar leptoquarks with a mass below 160 GeV/c^2, vector leptoquarks with anomalous minimal vector couplings with a mass below 240 GeV/c^2, and vector leptoquarks with Yang-Mills couplings with a mass below 290 GeV/c^2, are excluded at the 95% confidence level.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures.
