Orthomercurated and cycloaurated derivatives of the iminophosphorane Ph3P NPh
Ortho-lithiation of Ph3P NPh followed by reaction with HgCl2 gave good yields of [Hg{C6H4(PPh2 NPh)-2}Cl], 3, which was characterised spectroscopically and by an X-ray crystal structure determination. This is an isomer of the product of direct mercuration of Ph3P NPh which occurs on the N-bonded phenyl ring [J. Vicente, J.A. Abad, R. Clemente, J. Lopez-Serrano, M.C. Ramirez de Arellano, P.G. Jones, D. Bautista, Organometallics, 22 (2003) 4248]. Transmetallation of 3 with [AuCl4]â gave the corresponding cycloaurated complex [Au{Îș2-C,N-C6H4(PPh2 NPh)-2}Cl2], with a five-membered metallocyclic ring incorporating four different elements
Systematic review of the use of data from national childhood obesity surveillance programmes in primary care: a conceptual synthesis
This study reviewed the use in primary care of national surveillance data for children to determine the data's potential utility to inform policy and practice decisions on how to prevent and treat childhood obesity. We reviewed the 28 countries identified by the World Obesity Federation as having high-quality comparable body mass index data for children. Literature published from any period up to December 2013 was included. Peer review literature was searched using Web of Science (Core Collection, MEDLINE). Grey literature was searched using the Internet by country name, programme name and national health and government websites. We included studies that (i) use national surveillance obesity data in primary care, or (ii) explore practitioner or parent perspectives about the use of such data. The main uses of national surveillance data in primary care were to identify and recruit obese children and their parents to participate in school and general practice-based research and/or interventions, and to inform families of children's measurements. Findings indicate a need for school staff and practitioners to receive additional training and support to sensitively communicate with families. Translation of these findings into policy and practice could help to improve current uses of national child obesity surveillance data in primary care
The North Atlantic subpolar gyre regulates the spawning distribution of blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou Risso)
The spawning stock of blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou), an economically important pelagic gadoid in the North Atlantic Ocean, increased threefold after 1995. The reproductive success of the stock is largely determined during the very early stages of life, but little is known about the spawning dynamics of this species. Here we show that the spawning distribution of blue whiting is variable, regulated by the hydrography west of the British Isles. When the North Atlantic subpolar gyre is strong and spreads its cold, fresh water masses east over Rockall Plateau, the spawning is constrained along the European continental slope and in a southerly position near Porcupine Bank. When the gyre is weak and conditions are relatively saline and warm, the spawning distribution moves northwards along the slope and especially westwards covering Rockall Plateau. The apparent link between the spawning distribution and the subpolar gyre is the first step towards understanding the reproduction variability, which currently is the main challenge for appropriate management of the blue whiting stock

Deterministic delivery of externally cold and precisely positioned single molecular ions
We present the preparation and deterministic delivery of a selectable number
of externally cold molecular ions. A laser cooled ensemble of Mg^+ ions
subsequently confined in several linear Paul traps inter-connected via a
quadrupole guide serves as a cold bath for a single or up to a few hundred
molecular ions. Sympathetic cooling embeds the molecular ions in the
crystalline structure. MgH^+ ions, that serve as a model system for a large
variety of other possible molecular ions, are cooled down close to the Doppler
limit and are positioned with an accuracy of one micrometer. After the
production process, severely compromising the vacuum conditions, the molecular
ion is efficiently transfered into nearly background-free environment. The
transfer of a molecular ion between different traps as well as the control of
the molecular ions in the traps is demonstrated. Schemes, optimized for the
transfer of a specific number of ions, are realized and their efficiencies are
evaluated. This versatile source applicable for broad charge-to-mass ratios of
externally cold and precisely positioned molecular ions can serve as a
container-free target preparation device well suited for diffraction or
spectroscopic measurements on individual molecular ions at high repetition

p-Type semiconducting properties in lithium-doped MgO single crystals
The phenomenally large enhancement in conductivity observed when Li-doped MgO
crystals are oxidized at elevated temperatures was investigated by dc and ac
electrical measurements in the temperature interval 250-673 K. The
concentration of ([Li]^{0}) centers (Li^{+} ions each with a trapped hole)
resulting from oxidation was monitored by optical absorption measurements.
Both dc and ac experiments provide consistent values for the bulk resistance.
The electricalconductivity of oxidized MgO:Li crystals increases linearly with
the concentration of ([Li]^{0}) centers. The conductivity is thermally
activated with an activation energy of (0.70 +/- 0.01) eV, which is independent
of the ([Li]^{0}) content. The \textit{standard semiconducting} mechanism
satisfactorily explains these results. Free holes are the main contribution to
band conduction as they are trapped at or released from the ([Li]^{0})-acceptor
centers.
In as-grown MgO:Li crystals, electrical current increases dramatically with
time due to the formation of ([Li]^{0}) centers. The activation energy values
between 1.3 and 0.7 eV are likely a combination of the activation energy for
the creation of ([Li]^{0}) centers and the activation energy of ionization of
these centers. Destruction of ([Li]^{0}) centers can be induced in oxidized
crystals by application of an electric field due to Joule heating up to

Eye-tracking the timeâcourse of novel word learning and lexical competition in adults and children
Lexical competition is a hallmark of proficient, automatic word recognition. Previous research suggests that there is a delay before a new spoken word becomes engaged in this process, with sleep playing an important role. However, data from one method--the visual world paradigm--consistently show competition without a delay. We trained 42 adults and 40 children (aged 7-8) on novel word-object pairings, and employed this paradigm to measure the time-course of lexical competition. Fixations to novel objects upon hearing existing words (e.g., looks to the novel object biscal upon hearing âclick on the biscuitâ) were compared to fixations on untrained objects. Novel word-object pairings learned immediately before testing and those learned the previous day exhibited significant competition effects, with stronger competition for the previous day pairings for children but not adults. Crucially, this competition effect was significantly smaller for novel than existing competitors (e.g., looks to candy upon hearing âclick on the candleâ), suggesting that novel items may not compete for recognition like fully-fledged lexical items, even after 24 hours. Explicit memory (cued recall) was superior for words learned the day before testing, particularly for children; this effect (but not the lexical competition effects) correlated with sleep-spindle density. Together, the results suggest that different aspects of new word learning follow different time courses: visual world competition effects can emerge swiftly, but are qualitatively different from those observed with established words, and are less reliant upon sleep. Furthermore, the findings fit with the view that word learning earlier in development is boosted by sleep to a greater degree
Active Amplification of the Terrestrial Albedo to Mitigate Climate Change: An Exploratory Study
This study explores the potential to enhance the reflectance of solar
insolation by the human settlement and grassland components of the Earth's
terrestrial surface as a climate change mitigation measure. Preliminary
estimates derived using a static radiative transfer model indicate that such
efforts could amplify the planetary albedo enough to offset the current global
annual average level of radiative forcing caused by anthropogenic greenhouse
gases by as much as 30 percent or 0.76 W/m2. Terrestrial albedo amplification
may thus extend, by about 25 years, the time available to advance the
development and use of low-emission energy conversion technologies which
ultimately remain essential to mitigate long-term climate change. However,
additional study is needed to confirm the estimates reported here and to assess
the economic and environmental impacts of active land-surface albedo

Existence and uniqueness of solutions for systems of fractional differential equations with RiemannâStieltjes integral boundary condition
In this article, we first establish an existence and uniqueness result for a class of systems of nonlinear operator equations under more general conditions by means of the cone theory and monotone iterative technique. Furthermore, the iterative sequence of the solution and the error estimation of the system are given. Then we use this new result to study the existence and uniqueness of the solution for boundary value problems of systems of fractional differential equations with a RiemannâStieltjes integral boundary condition in real Banach spaces. The results obtained in this paper are more general than many previous results and complement them
Binary decay of Ni56 formed in the 32S+24Mg reaction
Fully energy-damped yields from the Mg32 reaction have been measured at center-of-mass energies of Ec.m.=51.6 and 60.5 MeV with the use of an experimental arrangement where both of the resulting heavy fragments could be detected in coincidence. Energy, velocity, and angular distributions of the reaction fragments have been determined. The cross sections prior to secondary light-particle emission have been deduced for the breakup of the compound system into different mass channels. These data are discussed in terms of two possible reaction mechanisms: fusion followed by fission and deep-inelastic orbiting
