What is the excess risk of infertility in women after genital chlamydia infection? A systematic review of the evidence
Methods: Twelve databases were searched, limited to peer-reviewed literature published from January 1970 to September 2007. Conference abstracts and reference lists from reviews published since 2000 and from key articles were hand-searched. Studies were selected for review if they met the following criteria: (1) the study population comprised women of child-bearing age (defined as 15–45 years) and incorporated a comparison group of women documented as "chlamydia negative"; (2) the study outcomes included either infertility or successful pregnancy; and (3) the study design was one of the following: cohort, randomised controlled trial, "before and after" study, screening trial and systematic review. Studies were excluded if they described genital infections that either did not include Chlamydia trachomatis or described genital chlamydial co-infection, in which no data were available for C trachomatis infection alone.
Results: 3349 studies were identified by the search. One study satisfied the inclusion criteria, a longitudinal investigation measuring pregnancy rates in adolescent women with and without current chlamydial infection at baseline. That study reported no significant difference in subsequent pregnancy rates; however, it had serious methodological limitations, which restricted its conclusions.
Conclusions: This systematic review demonstrates the absence of valid evidence on the attributable risk of post-infective tubal factor infertility after genital chlamydial infection. The findings contribute empirical data to the growing debate surrounding previous assumptions about the natural history of chlamydial infection in women

Each chapter also contains a rich list of references that could help readers dive further into the topic
Automated computation of materials properties
Materials informatics offers a promising pathway towards rational materials
design, replacing the current trial-and-error approach and accelerating the
development of new functional materials. Through the use of sophisticated data
analysis techniques, underlying property trends can be identified, facilitating
the formulation of new design rules. Such methods require large sets of
consistently generated, programmatically accessible materials data.
Computational materials design frameworks using standardized parameter sets are
the ideal tools for producing such data. This work reviews the state-of-the-art
in computational materials design, with a focus on these automated
frameworks. Features such as structural prototyping and
automated error correction that enable rapid generation of large datasets are
discussed, and the way in which integrated workflows can simplify the
calculation of complex properties, such as thermal conductivity and mechanical
stability, is demonstrated. The organization of large datasets composed of
calculations, and the tools that render them
programmatically accessible for use in statistical learning applications, are
also described. Finally, recent advances in leveraging existing data to predict
novel functional materials, such as entropy stabilized ceramics, bulk metallic

Comparison of the cardiometabolic profiles of adolescents conceived through ART with those of a non-ART cohort
STUDY QUESTION
Is the cardiometabolic health of adolescents conceived through ART worse than that of their counterparts conceived without ART?
SUMMARY ANSWER
The majority of cardiometabolic and vascular health parameters of adolescents conceived through ART are similar or more favourable, than those of their counterparts of similar age and conceived without ART.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY
It has been proposed that the cardiometabolic health of offspring conceived with ART may be unfavourable compared to that of their counterparts conceived without ART. The literature pertaining to cardiometabolic health of offspring conceived after ART is contradictory, but generally suggests unfavourable cardiometabolic health parameters, such as an increase in blood pressure (BP), vascular dysfunction and adiposity, as well as unfavourable glucose and lipid profiles. With over 8 million children and adults born through ART worldwide, it is important to investigate whether these early signs of adverse cardiometabolic differences persist into adolescence and beyond.
STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION
The Growing Up Healthy Study (GUHS) is a prospective cohort study that recruited 303 adolescents and young adults conceived after ART (aged 13–21 years) and born between 1991 and 2001 in Western Australia. Their health parameters, including cardiometabolic factors, were assessed and compared with counterparts from the Raine Study Generation 2 (Gen2). The 2868 Gen2 participants were born 1989–1992 and are representative of the Western Australian adolescent population. At ∼17 years of age (2013–2017), 163 GUHS participants replicated assessments previously completed by Gen2 at a similar age.
PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS
Cardiometabolic parameters were compared between a total of 163 GUHS and 1457 Gen2 adolescents. Separate male (GUHS n = 81, Gen2 n = 735) and female (GUHS n = 82, Gen2 n = 722) analyses were conducted. Assessments consisted of a detailed questionnaire including health, lifestyle and demographic parameters, anthropometric assessments (height, weight, BMI, waist circumference and skinfold thickness), fasting serum biochemistry, arterial stiffness and BP (assessed using applanation tonometry). Abdominal ultrasonography was used to assess the presence and severity of hepatic steatosis, and thickness of abdominal fat compartments. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) was diagnosed if there was sonographic fatty liver in the absence of significant alcohol consumption. Chi2, Fisher’s exact and Mann–Whitney U tests, performed in SPSS V25, examined cohort differences and generalized estimating equations adjusted for the following covariates: singleton vs non-singleton pregnancy, birthweight (z-score), gestational age, BMI, smoking, alcohol consumption in the past 6 months and parent cardiovascular status. Arterial stiffness measures and waist circumference were additionally adjusted for height, and female analyses were additionally adjusted for use of oral contraceptives in the preceding 6 months.
MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE
In adjusted analyses, GUHS females had a lower BMI (22.1 vs 23.3 kg/m2, P = 0.014), and thinner skinfolds (triceps, subscapular, mid-abdominal; 16.9 vs 18.7 mm, P = 0.021, 13.4 vs 15.0 mm, P = 0.027, 19.7 vs 23.2 mm, P < 0.001, respectively), whereas males were not significantly different. Waist circumference was lower in GUHS adolescents (males: 78.1 vs 81.3 cm, P = 0.008, females: 76.7 vs 83.3 cm, P = 0.007). There were no significant differences between the two groups in glucose, insulin, homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C), total cholesterol (TC), alanine aminotransferase and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein in both sexes. In females, serum triglycerides were lower in GUHS adolescents (1.0 vs 1.2 mmol/l, P = 0.029). GUHS males had higher serum HDL-C (1.1 vs 1.0 mmol/l, P = 0.004) and a lower TC/HDL-C ratio (3.2 vs 3.6, P = 0.036). There were no significant differences in the prevalence of NAFLD or steatosis severity scores between the cohorts in males and females. GUHS females had less subcutaneous adipose tissue (9.4 vs 17.9 mm, P < 0.001), whereas GUHS males had greater visceral adipose thickness (44.7 vs 36.3 mm, P < 0.001). There was no significant difference in pre-peritoneal adipose thickness. Pulse wave velocity was lower in GUHS males (5.8 vs 6.3 m/s, P < 0.001) and heart rate corrected augmentation index was lower in GUHS females (−8.4 vs −2.7%, P = 0.048). There were no significant differences in BP or heart rate in males or females between the two groups.
LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION
Despite the substantial study size and the unique study design of the ART cohort, we were unable to differentiate between different types of ART, due to the low number of ICSI cycles (e.g. IVF vs ICSI), draw definite conclusions, or relate the outcomes to the cause of infertility. Considering the differences in time points when both cohorts were studied, external factors could have changed, which could not be accounted for. Given the observational nature of this study, causation cannot be proven.
WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS
Contrary to our hypothesis and previous findings focussing mainly on childhood, this study reports mostly similar or favourable cardiometabolic markers in adolescents conceived with ART compared to those conceived without ART. The greater visceral adipose thickness, particularly present in males, requires further investigation. While these findings are generally reassuring, future well-designed and appropriately powered studies are required to definitively address the issue of cardiometabolic health in ART adults.

The effect of underwater sounds on shark behaviour
The effect of sound on the behaviour of sharks has not been investigated since the 1970s. Sound is, however, an important sensory stimulus underwater, as it can spread in all directions quickly and propagate further than any other sensory cue. We used a baited underwater camera rig to record the behavioural responses of eight species of sharks (seven reef and coastal shark species and the white shark, Carcharodon carcharias) to the playback of two distinct sound stimuli in the wild: an orca call sequence and an artificially generated sound. When sounds were playing, reef and coastal sharks were less numerous in the area, were responsible for fewer interactions with the baited test rigs, and displayed less ‘inquisitive’ behaviour, compared to during silent control trials. White sharks spent less time around the baited camera rig when the artificial sound was presented, but showed no significant difference in behaviour in response to orca calls. The use of the presented acoustic stimuli alone is not an effective deterrent for C. carcharias. Effects of old landfills on groundwater quality. Phase 2, investigation of the Thriplow landfill 1996–1997
Disused sand and gravel excavations overlying the major Chalk aquifer at Thriplow in Cambridgeshire have
been filled with domestic waste in two phases. One area (Phase 1) was filled between 1957–77 with little compaction
of the refuse and was left uncapped, while Phase 2 was deposited between 1981–87 and capped with
clay. Aerial photography and surface resistivity surveys indicate that the site geometry is complex, with several
phases of landfilling into excavations of differing depths. Drilling through the waste indicates that leachate production
and waste stabilisation proceed at different rates in capped and uncapped landfills. Analysis of leachate
obtained by centrifugation or squeezing appears to give more insight into the pollution potential than do leach
tests with distilled water. The Biological Methane Potential (BMP) of the waste appears to be related to the
quantity of decomposable material but the chemical oxygen demand (COD) values are distorted by the presence
of reduced metals. Too few boreholes have been drilled to define the leachate source in terms of its spatial distribution
and little is known of how its composition has changed with time. However, hydraulic conductivity measurements
on the landfill caps suggest that it is sufficiently permeable for all rainfall to potentially infiltrate the
waste.
Boreholes outside the landfill penetrate the Upper and Lower Chalk, and identify the Melbourn Rock and underlying
Plenus Marls at the junction of the two formations about 20 m below ground level (bgl). Surface resistivity
surveys using the BGS RESCAN system, confirm aerial photographs of the extent of the landfill and also
suggest that leachate has migrated beyond the base of the landfill. Evidence of leachate migration in pre-existing
screened boreholes completed above and below the Plenus Marls suggests that leachate is flowing above the
Plenus Marls. Hydraulic head measurements whilst drilling a borehole to the base of the lower Chalk approx. 70
m bgl revealed the potential for upward groundwater flow through the Plenus Marls. Thus, previously-drilled
boreholes penetrating the Plenus Marls are expected to recharge upwards into the shallow aquifer above the
Plenus Marls diluting any leachate in the upper aquifer and distorting the flow regime. Several of these boreholes
have subsequently been modified to stem the flow across the Plenus Marls.
One borehole down-gradient to the west of the site revealed a large thickness of drift composed of both sand and
clay rich material. This suggests the existence of a buried channel, the hydrogeological significance of which has
yet to be assessed.
Groundwater chemistry appears to be influenced by three major factors. (a) the landfill leachate (b) the composition
of shallow groundwater in the top 10 m of the Chalk, and (c) the composition of water from the Lower
Chalk. Limited groundwater monitoring data appear to display a cyclic variation in chloride concentration. The
origin for this is not clear but it may correlate with cyclic variations in groundwater levels when the water table
rises into the waste. Cyclic flushing of the landfill may release leachate into the aquifer giving rise to pulses of
chloride. Alternatively changes in chloride may arise by the changing direction of groundwater flow which as yet
has not been assessed.
A conceptual hydrogeological model in which flow is limited to above the Plenus Marls has been used to
develop a more appropriate groundwater flow and solute transport model. However, the model lacks data on
aquifer properties, on contaminant inputs concentrations, fluxes and spatial variations, and there is a paucity of
monitoring data for calibration. Nonetheless preliminary transport modelling using an equivalent porous medium
approach shows that an effective porosity of about 5% best fits the regional data. Since this is much less than the
total porosity of about 40% for the Chalk, it would appear that only part of the Chalk is available for flow but
that matrix diffusion could play an important role in leachate attenuation. Discrete fracture modelling using the
FRACTRAN code has allowed some scoping to be made of the hydraulic properties of the aquifer by comparison
with chloride hydrographs, but these again need to be better conditioned by in-situ measurement of fracture
distributions and transmissivities.
A number of additional activities are required to improve the understanding of flow and contaminant transport at
the site. These include better spatial definition of the waste distribution, improved data on the hydraulic properties
of the Chalk aquifer, and the use of automatic monitoring to record temporal changes in groundwater chemistry
and groundwater levels
Pellino-1 regulates the responses of the airway to viral infection
Exposure to respiratory pathogens is a leading cause of exacerbations of airway diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Pellino-1 is an E3 ubiquitin ligase known to regulate virally-induced inflammation. We wished to determine the role of Pellino-1 in the host response to respiratory viruses in health and disease. Pellino-1 expression was examined in bronchial sections from patients with GOLD stage two COPD and healthy controls. Primary bronchial epithelial cells (PBECs) in which Pellino-1 expression had been knocked down were extracellularly challenged with the TLR3 agonist poly(I:C). C57BL/6 Peli1−/− mice and wild type littermates were subjected to intranasal infection with clinically-relevant respiratory viruses: rhinovirus (RV1B) and influenza A. We found that Pellino-1 is expressed in the airways of normal subjects and those with COPD, and that Pellino-1 regulates TLR3 signaling and responses to airways viruses. In particular we observed that knockout of Pellino-1 in the murine lung resulted in increased production of proinflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNFα upon viral infection, accompanied by enhanced recruitment of immune cells to the airways, without any change in viral replication. Pellino-1 therefore regulates inflammatory airway responses without altering replication of respiratory viruses
Added dietary sulfur and molybdenum has a greater influence on hepatic copper concentration, intake, and performance in Holstein-Friesian dairy cows offered a grass silage- rather than corn silage-based diet
To test the hypothesis that the metabolism of Cu in dairy cows is affected by basal forage and added S and Mo, 56 dairy cows that were 35 (standard error ± 2.2) days postcalving and yielding 38.9 kg of milk/d (standard error ± 0.91) were offered 1 of 4 diets in a 2 × 2 factorial design for a 14-wk period. The 4 diets contained approximately 20 mg of Cu/kg of dry matter (DM), and had a corn silage-to-grass silage ratio of 0.75:0.25 (C) or 0.25:0.75 (G) and were either unsupplemented (−) or supplemented (+) with an additional 2 g of S/kg of DM and 6.5 mg of Mo/kg of DM. We found an interaction between forage source and added S and Mo on DM intake, with cows offered G+ having a 2.1 kg of DM lower intake than those offered G−, but no effect on the corn silage-based diets. Mean milk yield was 38.9 kg/d and we observed an interaction between basal forage and added S and Mo, with yield being decreased in cows offered G+ but increased on C+. No effect of dietary treatment on milk composition or live weight was noted, but body condition was lower in cows fed added S and Mo irrespective of forage source. We found an interaction between forage source and added S and Mo on milk somatic cell count, which was higher in cows offered G+ compared with G−, but not in cows fed the corn silage-based diets, although all values were low (mean values of 1.72, 1.50, 1.39, and 1.67 log10/mL for C−, C+, G−, and G+, respectively). Mean plasma Cu, Fe, and Mn concentrations were 13.8, 41.3, and 0.25 µmol/L, respectively, and were not affected by dietary treatment, whereas plasma Mo was 0.2 µmol/L higher in cows receiving added S and Mo. The addition of dietary S and Mo decreased liver Cu balance over the study period in cows fed either basal forage, but the decrease was considerably greater in cows receiving the grass silage-based diet. Similarly, hepatic Fe decreased more in cows receiving G than C when S and Mo were included in the diet. We concluded that added S and Mo reduces hepatic Cu reserves irrespective of basal forage source, but this decrease is considerably more pronounced in cows receiving grass silage- than corn silage-based rations and is associated with a decrease in intake and milk performance and an increase in milk somatic cell count
