    Food sharing with friends and acquaintances:A study in preschool boys and girls

    IntroductionThe current study examined whether preschoolers in a (semi-)natural situation shared more food with friends or acquaintances, and whether this was different between boys and girls, older and younger children, and for preferred and non- preferred food. In order to do so, we replicated and extended the classical work of Birch and Billman in a Dutch sample.MethodsParticipants included 91 children aged between 3 to 6 years (52.7% boys, 93.4% Western European) from a middle- to upper-middle-class neighborhood in the Netherlands.ResultsThe results revealed that children shared more non-preferred than preferred food with others. Girls gave more non-preferred food to acquaintances than to friends, whereas boys gave more to friends than to acquaintances. No effect of relationship was found for preferred food. Older children shared more food than younger children. Compared to acquaintances, friends made more active attempts to get food. Moreover, children who were not shared with were just as likely to share food as children who were shared with.DiscussionOverall, only a small degree of agreement with the original study was found: Some significant findings could not be replicated, and some unconfirmed hypotheses of the original study were supported. The results underscore both the need for replications and studying the effect of social-contextual factors in natural settings

    Mechatronics meets biology: Experiences and first results with a multipurpose small mammal monitoring unit used in red squirrel habitats

    Monitoring is a fundamental aspect of species conservation and research. Technological advances, especially with respect to camera trap technologies, have allowed glimpses into unknown aspects of species behaviour and have the potential to greatly assist species distribution monitoring. Here we present the findings of a pilot study combining existing biological monitoring techniques with mechatronics to advance monitoring technologies and develop a multi-purpose, species specific, automated monitoring system. We developed a Small Mammal Monitoring Unit (SMMU) that integrates automated video, and sound recording, carries out body weight measurements and takes hairs samples with a bait station in a portable perspex box. The unit has the potential for use with a range of small mammal species, but has been field-tested here on red squirrels, Sciurus vulgaris, in Germany, Scotland and Switzerland. We successfully collected hair-samples, body mass data as well as video and sound recordings. Preliminary data analyses also revealed behavioural information. Heavier individuals first gained access to the feeder in the morning and have longer feeding bouts. Our prototype demonstrated that the collaboration between mechatronic and biology offers novel, integrated monitoring techniques for a range of research application. The development of units for other mammal species is planned. Future developments will explore the possibilities for wireless data transmission, built-in collection of weather data and collection of images from inside the unit for the recognition of individuals

    A Systematic Review and Critical Appraisal of Peri-Procedural Tissue Perfusion Techniques and their Clinical Value in Patients with Peripheral Arterial Disease

    Objective: Many techniques have been introduced to enable quantification of tissue perfusion in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Currently, none of these techniques is widely used to analyse real time tissue perfusion changes during endovascular or surgical revascularisation procedures. The aim of this systematic review was to provide an up to date overview of the peri-procedural applicability of currently available techniques, diagnostic accuracy of assessing tissue perfusion and the relationship with clinical outcomes. Data Sources: MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Review Methods: This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Four electronic databases were searched up to 31 12 2020 for eligible articles: MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Eligible articles describing a perfusion measurement technique, used in a peri-procedural setting before and within 24 hours after the revascularisation procedure, with the aim of determining the effect of intervention in patients with PAD, were assessed for inclusion. The QUADAS-2 tool was used to assess the risk of bias and applicability of the studies. Results: An overview of 10 techniques found in 26 eligible articles focused on study protocols, research goals, and clinical outcomes is provided. Non-invasive techniques included laser speckle contrast imaging, micro-lightguide spectrophotometry, magnetic resonance imaging perfusion, near infrared spectroscopy, skin perfusion pressure, and plantar thermography. Invasive techniques included two dimensional perfusion angiography, contrast enhanced ultrasound, computed tomography perfusion imaging, and indocyanine green angiography. The results of the 26 eligible studies, which were mostly of poor quality according to QUADAS-2, were without exception, not sufficient to substantiate implementation in daily clinical practice. Conclusion: This systematic review provides an overview of 10 tissue perfusion assessment techniques for patients with PAD. It seems too early to appoint one of them as a reference standard. The scope of future research in this domain should therefore focus on clinical accuracy, reliability, and validation of the techniques

    Reliability assessment of hyperspectral imaging with the HyperView (TM) system for lower extremity superficial tissue oxygenation in young healthy volunteers

    Purpose: Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a noninvasive spectroscopy technique for determining superficial tissue oxygenation. The HyperView™ system is a hand-held camera that enables perfusion image acquisition. The evaluation of superficial tissue oxygenation is warranted in the evaluation of patients with peripheral arterial disease. The aim was to determine the reliability of repeated HSI measurements. Methods: In this prospective cohort study, HSI was performed on 50 healthy volunteers with a mean age of 26.4 ± 2.5 years, at the lower extremity. Two independent observers performed HSI during two subsequent measurement sessions. Short term test–retest reliability and intra- and inter-observer reliability were determined, and generalizability and decision studies were performed. Transcutaneous oxygen pressure (TcPO2) measurements were also performed. Results: The short term test–retest reliability was good for the HSI values determined at the lower extremity, ranging from 0.72 to 0.90. Intra- and inter-observer reliability determined at different days were poor to moderate for both HSI (0.24 to 0.71 and 0.30 to 0.58, respectively) and TcPO2 (0.54 and 0.56, and 0.51 and 0.31, respectively). Reliability can be increased to >0.75 by averaging two measurements on different days. Conclusion: This study showed good short term test–retest reliability for HSI measurements, however low intra- and inter-observer reliability was observed for tissue oxygenation measurements with both HSI and TcPO2 performed at separate days in young healthy volunteers. Reliability of HSI can be improved when determined as a mean of two measurements taken on different days

    Comparison of Bayesian and frequentist approaches in modelling risk of preterm birth near the Sydney Tar Ponds, Nova Scotia, Canada

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This study compares the Bayesian and frequentist (non-Bayesian) approaches in the modelling of the association between the risk of preterm birth and maternal proximity to hazardous waste and pollution from the Sydney Tar Pond site in Nova Scotia, Canada.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The data includes 1604 observed cases of preterm birth out of a total population of 17559 at risk of preterm birth from 144 enumeration districts in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. Other covariates include the distance from the Tar Pond; the rate of unemployment to population; the proportion of persons who are separated, divorced or widowed; the proportion of persons who have no high school diploma; the proportion of persons living alone; the proportion of single parent families and average income. Bayesian hierarchical Poisson regression, quasi-likelihood Poisson regression and weighted linear regression models were fitted to the data.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The results of the analyses were compared together with their limitations.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The results of the weighted linear regression and the quasi-likelihood Poisson regression agrees with the result from the Bayesian hierarchical modelling which incorporates the spatial effects.</p

    Vulnerability and its discontents: the past, present, and future of climate change vulnerability research

    The concept of vulnerability is well established in the climate change literature, underpinning significant research effort. The ability of vulnerability research to capture the complexities of climate-society dynamics has been increasingly questioned, however. In this paper, we identify, characterize, and evaluate concerns over the use of vulnerability approaches in the climate change field based on a review of peer-reviewed articles published since 1990 (n = 587). Seven concerns are identified: neglect of social drivers, promotion of a static understanding of human-environment interactions, vagueness about the concept of vulnerability, neglect of cross-scale interactions, passive and negative framing, limited influence on decision-making, and limited collaboration across disciplines. Examining each concern against trends in the literature, we find some of these concerns weakly justified, but others pose valid challenges to vulnerability research. Efforts to revitalize vulnerability research are needed, with priority areas including developing the next generation of empirical studies, catalyzing collaboration across disciplines to leverage and build on the strengths of divergent intellectual traditions involved in vulnerability research, and linking research to the practical realities of decision-making

    Differentiation between infected and non-infected wounds using an electronic nose

    Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore whether an electronic nose, Aetholab, is able to discriminate between infected versus non-infected wounds, based on headspace analyses from wound swabs. Methods: A total of 77 patients participated in this pilot study. Each wound was assessed for infection based on clinical judgment. Additionally, two wound swabs were taken, one for microbiological culture and one for measurement with Aetholab. Diagnostic properties with 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) of Aetholab were calculated with clinical judgment and microbiological culture results as reference standards. Results: With clinical judgment as reference standard, Aetholab had a sensitivity of 91% (95%CI 76–98) and a specificity of 71% (95%CI 55–84). Diagnostic properties were somewhat lower when microbiological culture results were used as reference standard: sensitivity 81% (95%CI 64–91), specificity 63% (95%CI 46–77). Conclusions: Aetholab seems a promising diagnostic tool for wound infection given the diagnostic properties presented in this pilot study. A larger study is needed to confirm our results
